How did the project develop?

In 1995 Laakdal fraternized with Jurbarkas, a city in Lithuania.  The first contacts were situated in cultural field.  In 1997 a first exchange took place by means of a sports camp in Jurbarkas.  Afterwards more camps were organized in the field of culture and sports in Laakdal as well as in Jurbarkas.

End of 1999, beginning of 2000 the question rose how the situation in Jurbarkas was with the different organizations, which work with youth.  When in May 2000 a delegation of Jurbarkas visited Laakdal, these people informed us that they had just started up a sort of council.  This would assemble a number of different people who represent a youth association.  This was for us an ideal opportunity to think more concrete about the ideas we had to start up an international project.

Between the delegation and ELE (Europe in Laakdal in Europe), a non-profit association, which follows up the fraternization and which is supported by local authority subsidies, the question rose whether the youth council of Laakdal could not establish relations with this council in Jurbarkas.  The district council of Jurbarkas could only have hoped this.  In the youth council this idea was well supported.  In August 2000 this resulted in the departure of a delegation of 3 persons from the youth council to Jurbarkas.  The aim was to establish first contacts with the idea of fraternization at the back of the head.

On the first official meeting we had during this trip, it became quickly clear that both sides were highly interested in organizing an exchange.  The conversations showed that there was a lack of organization in the associations, which do not work in competing way with young people.  The reason for this is the fact that they do not know how to deal with certain problems.

After the official visits in Jurbarkas we have travelled around to the different cities together with 4 other youngsters.  This way we could get to know eachother in a pleasant and relaxed way.  During this trip we could talk extensively about young people in Lithuania as well as about the support and organization of youth associations.  More information about this trip can be found in the detailed report we made.

The experiences we wrote down in this report have also been brought forward on the general meeting of the youth council.  After this explanation it was unanimously agreed upon to take up the challenge to develop a project with these partners.  The goal we aimed at that moment for the project was to assemble in one way or the other in Jurbarkas youngsters of different character in a fixed structure in order to organize activities together without any competitive relationship between the different associations.  A place where everyone is welcome and can express his free opinion in sports, play and contemplations.  But also a place where youngsters learn to keep themselves to the rules and to live together in an honest and fair way.
