Je redige ces notes dans le train qui nous ramène du GR65 à chez nous. Le petit GPS nous a bien servi tout le long des 329km de Moissac à Roncevaux. J'ai compté au moins six raisons pour lesquelles je suis reconnaissant à notre petit ami électronique et, pendant que les souvenirs sont encore frais, j'en fais ici le compte-rendu: |

I write these notes in the train as we return home from this year's walk on the GR65. The GPS has served us well all the way from Moissac to Roncevalles. I've counted at least six reasons to be grateful to our little yellow friend, and while the memories are still fresh, here is that list:

¶ C`est grâce au GPS que nous avons pu être, je crois, de bons Samaritains pour le randonneur que nous avons croisé le dernier jour au Col de Bentarte, haut dans les montagnes pyrénéennes. Ce col est près de l'endroit où, le 15 août 778, les Vascons ont massacré Roland et toute l'arrière-garde de l'armée de Charlemagne – et où, plus récemment, en janvier et en avril 2002, trois pélerins ont trouvé la mort dans des tempêtes de neige . Pour nous, ce jour-là, il ne faisait pas froid, mais les nuages bas limitaient la visibilité à à peine 10m. Nous naviguions sans difficulté avec carte, boussole et GPS, mais notre ami était totalement désorienté et perdu. Il nous a dit qu'il suivait le GR10 (qui croise le GR65 à cet endroit), et qu'il avait mis plus d'une heure à la recherche, dans la brume et le brouillard, des balises de son GR10. Ne pouvant rien trouver, et dans l'incapacité de voir quoi que ce soit devant lui, il avait finalement abandonné la recherche. Avec l'aide de notre GPS nous avons pu lui indiquer sa position, à 5 mètres près, sur la carte IGN 1mm::25m. Nous l'avons laissé le moral en hausse et, je crois, en meilleur état que nous ne l'avions trouvé.

¶ Thanks to the GPS we were able, I think, to be good neighbours for the walker who we met on our last day, high in the Pyrenees on the Col de Bentarte. This is the place where, on the 15 August 778, the waiting Vascons killed Roland and the whole rear-guard of Charlemagne's army – and where, more recently, in January and in April 2002, three pilgrims were caught in snow storms, and died . It wasn't cold when we were there, but the clouds had descended and visibility was at best 10metres. With map, compass and GPS we had no difficulty in finding our way, but our friend was totally disoriented – he was lost. He told us that he was walking the GT10, which crosses the chemin at that point; he had spent more than an hour in the cloud and mist looking for the next GR10 waypoint, and had given up. With our GPS and the IGN 1mm::25m map we were able to show him our location to within ± 5m. We left him visibly more cheerful, and, I think, in better form than we had found him.

¶ D'une manière moins dramatique, le GPS nous a été fort utile tous les matins de notre randonnée. En effet, nous avions pris l'habitude de nous lever tôt, afin de pouvoir terminer notre parcours journalier avant les grandes chaleurs (c'etait la mini-canicule de juillet 2006). Ainsi, chaque matin, il nous fallait partir dans le noir et faire nos premiers 5 km avant le lever du jour. Dans l'obscurité, avec notre GPS que nous consultions en cas de doute, nous n'avons jamais raté une balise. |

¶ Less dramatically, the GPS was useful to us every morning of our walk. We decided to get up early each day, so as to be able to reach our destination before it got really hot (we were walking throughthe heatwave of July 2006). So we set off each morning before daybreak, walking the first 5km in the dark. With GPS to consult, we never missed a waymark. |

¶ Par contre, une fois le soleil levé et le GPS rangé dans son étui, nous avons un jour perdu le balisage et sommes passés du mauvais côté d'un grand champs de maïs. Le GPS nous a ramenés au GR par la route la plus courte, et de manière assez excitante, en longeant à l'aveugle les rangées de maïs de plus de 2 m de haut.

¶ But on the other hand, one day when the sun was up, we did lose our way. The GPS was tucked away in its holder, and we found ourselves the wrong side of an enormous field of maize. The GPS got us straight back to the GR, following a fairly exciting track (walking blind between the rows of maize, standing higher than our heads).

¶ Le GPS nous a permis de rendre service à nos hôtes le long du chemin. De plus en plus d'hôtels, de chambres d'hôtes et de gîtes proposent leurs sites personnels sur internet. Certains d'entre eux, qui se trouvent un peu à l'écart du GR65, nous ont dit que les randonneurs avaient parfois des difficultés de les retrouver. Nous avons pu leur offrir notre carte de visite avec, écrit à la main, « Les coordonnées de votre porte sur la rue sont: Latitude N.NNNNNNN°, Longitude O.OOOOOOO° ». Ce sera intéressant de voir combien d'entre eux ajouteront leurs coordonnées Longitude/Latitude à leurs adresse postale et electronique.

¶ Also thanks to the GPS we were able to give a little present to our stopover hosts. We gave them a hand written visiting card « The coordinates of your front gate are: Latitude y.yyyyyyy°, Longitude x.xxxxxx° ». More and more hotels, bed and breakfast places and gites now have their own site on the internet. Some of them, especially those who are a little bit off the GR65, told us that people sometimes had difficulty in finding them (« turn left at the oakwood »). It will be interesting to see how many of them add these details to their postal address and email.

¶ En plus, grâce au petit carton leur indiquant leurs coordonnées Latitude Longitude, et à Google Earth , ils on pu survoler la planête Terre, et descendre vers l'Europe, la France, le Gers ... pour finir au dessus des champs, des haies et des bâtiments de leur propriétés. Ça leur faisait grand plaisir.

¶ And in front of their computer, with the visiting card in hand, they could, thanks to Google Earth , fly over planet Earth and descend towards Europe ... France ... the Gers ... to end up flying over the fields, hedges and outbuildings they knew so well from the ground. They found that fun.

Il y a quelques années le pèlerin avait fait le chemin de Saria jusqu'à Santiago (100+ km) en compagnie de son père. A cette époque ce dernier avait 80 ans. Maintenant, n'ayant plus la capacité de faire le chemin à pied, son fils aimerait lui aider à faire une randonnée virtuelle. Notre GPS a Ijustement stocké dans sa mémoire les détails de tout notre trajet, de Moissac à Roncevaux. Une fois de retour chez nous, j'espère pouvoir récuperer ces données et les offrir à cette personne.

Some years ago, the pilgrim had walked to Santiago from Saria (100+ km) with his father, who at the time was 80 years old. Now his father was no longer able to do the walk, and his son wished to offer him a virtual trip along the chemin. As I write, the memory of our GPS should contain the details of our whole track from Moissac to Roncesvalles. Once I am home I hope to be able to download the track and send the file to this pilgrim, for his father.

¶ Conclusion. Féru du bon vieux système pour la randonnée - boussole, carte, et rien d'autre - j'étais un peu réticent à l'époque où j'avais reçu le GPS en cadeau. Mais the proof of the pudding is in the eating, et le bilan d'aujourd'hui est positif. Il ne pèse rien (90g) et il a rendu grand service aussi bien à d'autres qu'à nous-mêmes. Le systême de navigation par satellite a vu le jour pendant la guerre froide. Il a permis aux Americains de cibler leurs fusées à travers les fenêtres du palais de Saddam Hussein. Mais la petite machine du pélerin-randonneur donne l'espoir que:

¶ Summary. Brought up on the good old system of map and compass, I was a bit suspicious when I first opened my birthday parcel to find that it countained a new-fangled GPS. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating – and for me, the balance is nothing but positive. The GPS adds nothing (well, 90g) to the weight of the pack, and it has served us, and others, very well. The satellite navigation system was invented during the cold war. The Americans used it to send their long-range rockets down the streets of Baghdad, turning left and right and in at the windows of Saddam Hussein's palace. But for us, the little yellow box sustains the hope (Is 2:4) that
