Univers ZeroUnivers Zero is an old band, firmly rooted in the seventies. They are also fairly unknown to young people, although they have a good following among fans of Progressive and/or Experimental Rock. The founder of Univers Zero is Daniel Denis, who played in the early 70s experimental trio Arkham. He also shortly played in the French band Magma, one of the bands of the RIO-movement (RIO stands for Rock In Opposition, a term coined by the band Henry Cow). RIO is an organisation that helps experimental rock bands, outside of the normal circuit. When he left Magma, he returned to Brussels and founded Univers Zero, a band whose music intermingles the rock of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart with the chamber music of Bela Bartok and Igor Stravinsky (hence the name Chamber Rock for the entire genre), with a tad of gothic. The year is 1974. In 1987, Univers Zero split up. Daniel Denis joined Art Zoyd, another French RIO band, and Present, a spin-off of Univers Zero. However, in 1998 the band came together again for a new album and tour. Univers Zero forms a link between the progressive rock scene of the seventies and the 'new' experimental bands of the Belgian scene, in several ways. Two of its later members, Jean-Luc Plouvier and Michel Delory, were also a part of X-Legged Sally (Michel Delory left before the first album was recorded, and was replaced by Pierre Vervloesem). Guy Segers founded the Carbon 7 cd label for Belgian avant-garde music, working with for example Pierre Vervloesem, Kris Dane and Aka Moon.
Univers Zero witnessed a lot of personnel changes, so these people didn't always play together.
