Maximalist!

Maximalist! was a band formed to perform the compositions of Thierry De Mey and Peter Vermeersch, written for the dance choreographies of Wim Vandekeybus. It was a kind of a mix between a post-modern classical and a jazz ensemble. The compositions of Vermeersch and De Mey were at that time rather minimalistic (hence, in contrast, the name of the band).

Maximalist!s first, self-titled album got reviewed in the New York Times by A. Kisselgoff, who wrote that "the exclamation point is part of the title and fits the entire performance."

Maximalist! can be considered as a direct precursor to X-Legged Sally with three early members already present: Vermeersch, Plouvier and Sleichim. It was Peter Vermeersch' frustration of being stuck with a fixed score that made him call to life XLS, a jazz combo where improvisation and experiment were possible.
