De Kakkewieten

De Kakkewieten are not really a group, they're more of a collective. They are lots of people who like to play music and theatre together. They are, without any doubt, the most crazy group in Belgium.

Stoffel Verlackt tells about a predecessor to De Kakkewieten, which was called Sheriff Wilson and the Funkadelic Federation.

A first KKWT show started in 1996, on a memorial for Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen. This memorial, organised semi-illegally in the unused transit station Antwerp South, later became the largest alternative festival in Belgium, and the only real indoor winter festival: De Nachten.

This first show consisted of several actors and musicians reciting poetry of van Ostaijen while doing crazy and risky tricks, like hanging upside down from a rusty balcony.

Shortly after, De Kakkewieten made their TV debut in Bart Peeters' weird tv show De Liegende Doos, an alternative show that by accident was broadcast by the commercial mainstream television station VTM. De Kakkewieten slowly gained popularity, first among the older people who knew Bart Peeters from his radio show Het Leugenpaleis on Studio Brussel, and later also among the younger generation who started to appreciate the madness that was a trademark of Bart Peeters and his companion Hugo Matthijsen.

In 1997 and 1998, De Kakkewieten toured with their musical show, called Snözje. This show also invaded the Pukkelpop festival, and was last performed at De Nachten in january 1999.

1999 saw a first 'real' theatre show by De Kakkewieten. The play was inspired on Witold Gombowicz' play Ivonne, Princess of Burgundy and was first called Nerven but later had its title changed to Universal Irritant, with the additional pseudo-German remark 'Ein Englisher Tittel, want das spricht der Jungeren an.'

Universal Irritant was very succesful, playing before enthousiastic audiences in all Flanders and being awarded with the Fakkelprijs. It had a second year of performances in 2000.

In the meantime, many Kakkewieten had joined the mambo-project El Tattoo del Tigre that was also extremely succesful.

As KKWT is a collective, and not a band, it is very difficult to make a complete list of its members. Some old members have left, some new members have joined. This list is far from complete, I would really appreciate additions.

I don't have the slightest idea if this is correct. In fact, Snözje may be the same as either the van Ostaijen or the musical show. Any and all information is therefor highly welcomed.
