1. Composition

The fortress of Namur or 'Le Position Fortifiée de Namur' was (as the Fortress of Liége ) build on ideas and plans of Général Brialmont. It consisted of nine isolated fortresses, four large and five small. Their design and armoury was the same as in Liége. They encircel Namur on a distance of 5 to 8 km of the city's center. Between the fortresses is a distance wich varies from 2 to 6 km (Marchovelette - Maizeret). There was also a declassified, old fortress, 'La Citadelle'.

2. Les Troupes de Forteresse de Namur

The commander of the 4° Division was also governor of the 'Position fortifiée de Namur'. Therefore a général-major and a special staff was assigned to assist him. It was stipulated that the 4° Division would be removed from his command if this division was needed in another part of the country.
