CD album Land 2001

POGS BOX Palo Alto remixed by Norscq, Neven, the Flying Star Fish, Laurent Pernice, Phil Von, Jefferson Lembeye

Palo Alto s'est taillé une jolie réputations dans le domaine de l'improvisation électroacoustique. En vertu de ce principe qui devrait constamment guider tout musicien digne de ce nom, ils ont invité quelques-uns de leurs homologues à décliner leurs compositions sur un mode franchement électronique.

Le résultat est surprenant car lesintervenants, à commencer par Norscq, The Flying Star Fish et Laurent Pernice, ont littéralement transfiguré les éléments sonores mis à leur disposition.

En alchimistes rompus aux subtilités de leurs machines, ils en extraient de l'electronica mélodieuse (Jefferson Lembeye, "Serial pog"), parfois étrange mais toujours rythmée avec retenue (Neven, "Flippo mix"). Le climat est variable, passant de nappes sombres à des enchaînements speedés de breakbeats (Phil Von, "Sgoppy").

Au final, "Pogs Box" est un album transversal en parfaite concordance avec ce projet initial de relecture numérique. (Laurent Diouf, Coda, sept.2001)

Norscq: bold.pig.mix
Norsq has been releasing as The Grief and is known for his engineering work for Von Magnet Quattrophage, Jérome Soudan's solo project Mimetic Fields and Wild Shores. Norsq´s remix on the first track starts with a long ambient intro that evolves into a mix of hypnotic beats.
Neven: flippo mix
The second track is a production of Peter Clasen, founder and thriving force behind Belgian Dance collective Neven, which gained a reputation as Belgium's first triphop band. Peter Clasen is know for his expertise in mixing beats and samples with traditional instruments using the Cubase sequencer, a mixing desk and samplers.
Clasen adds an evolving analog bass synth sound to his mix, which gives the track more of a techno feeling. By adding a very broad room ambience the mix drifts away from the typical dry and hard techno sound. The breaks he adds tend to be melodically oriented.
Laurent Pernice: entre chiens et loup
After being a percussionist for French industrial band Nox during the 80's, Laurent Pernice started working more and more with electronics. After a period of experimenting with extra European music and grooves reminding of On-U-Sound releases around 1994, starts to investigate techno and electronic music. Pernice also takes in interest in and actually produces film music and music for business corporations and institutions.
The flying star fish: pogs mix vers.0.01
The band was formed in Limoges (France) starting with three members. Their music is electronic and electro-acoustic; mixing experimental sounds and hypnotic grooves. Their main influence comes from early electronic music bands like Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Ash Ra Temple, Yello and Von Magnet. Currently The Flying Star Fish is a solo project of Patrick Camberton.
On this track the mix is build on a drum & bass beat to which a simple monotonous bass is added. Various breaks, one of which ends the track with an Arabic singer against a broad synth pad sound, keeps this track interesting and alive.
Jefferson Lembeye: serial pog
At the age of 18 Jefferson Lembeye buys a trumpet and starts to play on it. He also learns to play the bass, guitar and Arab drums. In the same time, and while living in Africa and the US, he studies literature and specializes in the relations between music, literature and politics. From 1997 on he gets interested in electronic musical instruments.
Apart from his own releases he also composes music for film and theatre and contemporary dance. Additionally he partakes in exhibitions and live performances, collaborating with dancers and video artists.
Extra rhythm material and samples of voices are added to this remix. The way it¹s mixed gives the track more of a dub feel. Not only by the extensive use of reverb and delay effects, but also the mix sticks to the half note progression throughout the track.
Phil Von: sgoppy
Phil Von is one of the main exponents of French industrial, experimental and electronic music. He is the leader and singer of well-known formation Von Magnet. He experimented not only in music, but also in various other fields, like multi-media, dance and performance.
Phil Von uses human beat box sounds for the rhythm part of his remix. The track ends with drastically changing the playing speed.
Laurent Pernice: et inversement
Pernice utilises a minimalist approach on this track by using an a-tonal piano lick combined with abrasive industrial sounds and a brutally pulsating pitched background. This track very much reminds of the recent Infra Jazz release.

Ethnic music styles have always been favorably received by ours westerns ears. A plea for expatriation, for escape. Whereas in the past these styles have borrowed dissociated elements, the former have finally found an ideal partner in the music said « electronic », resulting a supreme osmosis. The titles of this compilation represent the unique process, an arabian resonance with an Idian source : a rich and driving mosaique thus illustrating all influence of the Eastern art on our sonorous aspirations.

From Banco de Gaia, forerunner of ethno electronic during the 80’s to While, the youngest artist of this compiling, Electr’Oriental Delight visits all electronic tedencies, mixing Orient and Occident : Sagara’s urban groove(*), While’s out of phase trance, Kamel Nitrate’s breakbeat-drum’n’bass, Karmix’s electro raï groove, Elea’s psychedelic vibe, Banco de Gaia’s neo psychedelic groove, Toirès’s ethno ambient, Mimetic Mute’s indus-tribal, Glow’s trance.
