The
serial number of a Citroën sm can be found on a small identification
plate located at the right chassis rail close to the engine. Next to this
identification plate the serial number is also stamped in the chassis
rail.
To first 2 numbers are 00 or 01, the next 2 digits are SB (2,7 liter carburetor
engine with manual gearbox), SD (3 liter engine with automatic transmission),
SC (2,7 liter fuel injected engine with manual gearbox). The last 4 numbers
are the car serial number.
The table below shows the sm serial numbers in relation to the "commercialization"
dates (when the cars left the factory).
Not all the serial numbers in the sequence below were attributed. A number
of SB cars exported to the USA until October 1971 had the 2,7 liter engine
with automatic transmission. When the first SB series numbers ran out
at SB 9999 (June 1972) Citroën produced another series of 2,7 liter
cars with automatic transmission for the USA. These cars had the 01 SB
numbers and were produced together with the first SC cars. Not all the
SD cars are automatics. About a third of this series of cars has the 3
liter engine with the manual transmission, a model that was much appreciated
in the USA).
