Citroën SM as recovered from barn

Serial number 00SD 0433 is the latest addition to a long line of CitroŽn cars (see previous residents in my garage). This car was imported from the USA and is in original condition. It has covered 50000 miles and came with a full history and with a fully stamped "Warranty and Maintenance guide". The car was originally sold by North Jersey Mothers to DR. George H. Sabel of Woodcliff lake, New Jersey. The reason I bought this car was its original condition and mainly the full service history. When it arrived in Europe the car drove very well and everything was in fine working order except for a minor problem with a cracked fuel hose which was repaired instantly. Then after only 500 miles of driving things went seriously wrong. When easing away from a red light in town the car was suddenly engulfed in steam and the engine quit. What happened? A valve broke and hit the piston, destroying the number one cylinder spark plug. The broken valve shows tiny traces of cracks probably caused by contact rust when the car was stored for a long period of time. The engine was not completely destroyed (still turns with the starter motor) but will be rebuild with new valves and some other worthwhile modifications and updates. This is the first really major problem I have had with any of my classic cars. Not even a full service history can protect you from sudden death!

I have started a complete site devoted to the Citroën SM called smonline. Check it out here
