The next time we got an unhosted (MORE EXPENSIVE) young woman's ground floor apartment in soho in the midst of the gallery/restaurant area that even opened to an inside courtyard and had a stocked frig and bar (WE DID NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HER HERE, JUST A SODA, EVEN THO WE WERE TOLD TO HELP OURSELVES).I frankly was astonished someone in NYC would trust total strangers that way and hoped she never had any problems, but it was fabulous. Have your dates when you call as the agency is very busy, not southern ,you know. In New York State there is a program administered by the Empire State Crafts Alliance which already meets that need for NY craftspeople. The Handcrafted in New York program was initiated several years ago and allows proffessional craftspeople to use the logo on their work and support materials. It also provides support materials to give to customers to explain the program. In order to qualify for the program you have to be juried into it. You have to send slides of you work, photos or video of your studio(preferably a working shot), and you have to be willing to allow ESCA to send a representative to your studio and demonstrate that you have the working knowledge and skills to actually create your work to that representative. We are founding participants in this program and have found it to be very worthwhile. For more info contact: ESCA, 320 Montgomery St., Syracuse, NY 13202 (315)472-4245 Meghan White By the way if you live in New York you should be a member of this organization anyway. It's the closest thing New York has to a statewide craft's guild. It was one of the first professional crafts organization in the country to provide a method for craftspeople to secure affordable health insurance. Anyway that's my unpaid endorsement for the day. I'm not even on the board. Sorry I'm so late with the response, but I had to look for the info. A few years ago, my son who lives in New York City, gave me, for my birthday, an invitation to a tea ceremony at the Urasenke Chanoyu Center. The center hosts the teas once a month and registration is required. The tea master leads the group through the steps as you participate. The philosophy, history and tradition of Chado are discussed. At the end of the ceremony and tour, the group is encouraged to ask questions and participate in the discussion. It was all quite exciting for me since the only connection I had, at that point, was what I had been reading and the tea bowls I was creating. If you're anywhere in the vicinity, treat yourself! And remember, only 2 1/2 sips/gulps!! >From what I see in my book they also have branches in Honolulu, San Francisco, and Seattle.
