Not only exotic cultures and innovations were to explore at Expo 58, even the native kitchen of some participations could be tasted.
There were a lot of places to eat and drink at Expo 58, from small snackbars to high class restaurants.
A total of 30 000 square metres was occupied by eating houses, snack-bars, restaurants and drink stands. The entire food facilities offered more than 20000 cooks and waiters a busy job. About 70 restaurants, mostly part of a contribution, were spread over the exhibition grounds.
A great number of restaurants could be found in the Folklore section and often visited by people who loved the rural environment of the old buildings. Typical Belgian and Flemish plates were frequently annonced on menu carts, but the nearby Modern Section together with the Attractions Park had some common eating possibilities.
Visitors of certain (exotic) restaurants were not allways equally enthousiast about the served up culinary courses.
Well-attended for their kitchen were de restaurants of the pavilions of Russia, Mexico and Japan.
The Russian restaurant, located just nearby the main entrance, seated more than 250 people. Regional Russian specialities were served up.
A tavern with tatched roof was part of the terrrace of the Mexican pavilion. People could taste there specific Mexican drinks and typical food like tortilla's and quesadilla's.
Next to the pavilion of Japan, there was a true-to-life reconstruction of the world-famous Japanese gardens with a restaurant serving Sukiyaki (cooked meat and vegetables).
Also other curious restaurants were located in the Belgium section where pavilions of Gas and Electricity got their kitchens equiped with glass walls. People could watch the cooks preparing the meal-orders.
The Hall of Elegancy at the Esplanade was also a special consumers place for official banquets and receptions. Not for common people but only invited guests could enjoye the great pomp and circumstance of this building.
Special eating possibilities in the 100 metres high situaded Atomium restaurant where people enjoying their meal with a splendid panorama of the world fair. Another special place for dining was the hemispheric dining room of the Praha restaurant.
But Expo 58 introduced new food by many of its visitors. Since the discovering of Coca-Cola, barbecue, fried chicken, sandwiches, hamburgers, soft-ice, filet Americain, instant soup and so on, the Belgian eating habit changed forever! |
