Who doesn't know the HERO "Thorgal"??
Well I guess if you like comics, you'd know about Thorgal. Let me tell you about him anyway.
That is, If you don't mind, of course.
Thorgal is the last survivor, or should I say, the last child of the People coming from the Stars.
They left the earth, hundreds of thousands of years ago, and returned to it, after their own planet
has been destroyed. But these returning survivors ahd to deal with an internal struggle for power.
Soon they got divided into two camps, and battle could start. Like
all battles there were no winners, but many losers. The people themselves...
Only due to the action of Thorgal's mother, he can survive.. replaying the Tale of Moses, left in the
sea in a small vessel, he's picked up by the brave, little bit barbarian, Vikings. He is raised (again
like Moses) by the King ( King Leif Haraldson ).
King Leif Haraldson, baptises the little child with the name : THORGAL Aegirsson, Send by the God Thor, and son of the God Aegir.
Thorgal has no destiny, no mortal destiny that is. He is not part of the world,
created by the Gods of the vikings.
So in many adventures he can escape his own death. In fact he encounters 'Death' or 'Destiny' in
one of the albums: "Beyond the Shadows" (De Schaduwen Voorbij). This album,
by the way, is one of the best Scripts I ever red in the world of the comics. It has been rewarded in 1983
with "the Great Price Saint-Michel'.
Thorgal is in fact the son of one of worlds best comic-designers: Grzegorz Rosinski, born in 1941 in Poland, but
after graduation at the 'Academy of Art', and working some years as illustrator for Books for Children and many
Covers for Long-Playing Albums, he really gets into comics, and of course, moves soon after that to Belgium,
Kingdom of comics.
Soon after that he meets Jean Van Hamme, born in Brussels in 1939. This meeting results in the Heroic Creature
Thorgal, which Jean Van Hamme created especially for the talents of Rosinski. Although Jean Van Hamme had studied
Economical as well as Political Sciences, he realises his future is in the world of the comics. In 1980 he
receives the Saint-Michel price for the best realistic scenario for the Whole of His Work!
In a next Update I will try to introduce all 26 books of Thorgal to you ... come back :-)
