Tielt is a small city with 20.000 inhabitants and consists of Tielt centre (14.000 inhabitants) and 3 smaller towns: Kanegem, Aarsele and Schuiferskapelle.
The city is well equipped with a cultural centre, youth and sports centre
with a public swimming pool. Also the commercial level is very good:
besides a shopping street there are different supermarkets in the city.
Fresh vegetables, bakery and meat can be bought even on Sunday mornings.
On Thursday, there is a weekly market and on Saturdays occurs a farmer
market with fresh vegetables and dairy products.Around the Market Place, there are small restaurants and pubs. In summer time the market place is surrounded with terraces, where you can eat or drink. Tielt also has some nice monuments: the Cloth makers’ Hall and Belfry with a carillon of 36 bells is an Unesco World Heritage Monument. You can make nice tours on foot or by bicycle in and around the city. Kanegem is a small town belonging to Tielt. It is very well known for its huge neo-baroque church and the ten thousands of flowers in the town. For the efforts for flowering the town, Kanegem was rewarded internationally many times.
Tielt and its surroundings is very well known for its remaining windmills.
A 75-kilometer Mill Tour can be made by car. The Poelberg Mill is still in
operation on Sundays.
Tielt can be reached very easily by car, since the national highways pass
only at 20 kilometres. (the E40-A10 and the E17-A14) There is also a
direct train connection with the Belgian Coast and Brussels.
