Namaikina Ichinen-bouzu
[Audacious first year dude]
New Characters: Ninomiya Ami ; Yamato Keisuke ; Seki Kazuaki ; Kitano Kyoutarou ; Ogata Takeshi ; Kume Masaru
[NO:12]
The first chapter of this series introduces the main characters (the five guys and Ami) by means of Narita, a third year student who thinks he is the big chief and wants to establish his authority amongst the newcomers who (in his opinion) are a little bit too audacious.

Unfortunately for him, they aren't guys to be messed around with. Kitano Kyoutarou has the appearance of a real Schwartzenegger. Seki Kazuaki does basketball for the moment but is karate third dan, Ogata Takeshi makes minced meat out of all the others in the baseball club and Kume Masaru may look like a fatso but he has the force of an ox. So Narita wisely decides to go for ramen instead.

Meanwhile at the swimming pool, Yamato Keisuke (a very good swimmer) is addressed by a girl who introduces herself as Ninomiya Ami. He is very surprised when she accuses him of being a murderer. {PVH}

Ou, Ninomiya da
[Ah, it's Ninomiya]
Yamato Keisuke has a bad dream about him being accused as a murderer by Ninomiya. He is awakened by the four other guys who rush out to his room window to see if they cannot get a glimpse of the girls' shower room from here (Keisuke's room being the only one from where one can see the shower room in the girls' dorm). At school Keisuke is being formally introduced to Ninomiya by Ogata who apparently comes from the same junior high school as she. In the swimming pool Ami continues nagging Keisuke but he hasn't got a clue why. {PVH}

Koochi no Shiawase
[The Coach's happiness]
We see that Ami practices diving as a sport and she is quite good at it. The swimming coach is very interested in Keisuke. We learn that he has been third in the national middle school swimming competition, 100 meter free style swimming. Keisuke on the other hand isn't so pleased: the only one who has reasons to be pleased is his rival in middle school and the first in the finals, Serizawa Yuuji. In the evening, Ami is interested in knowing more about Keisuke and inquires a dormmate who is in the same classroom as he. {PVH}

Shitagaki no Dankai
[Gradations of a rough drawing]
In this chapter, we learn why this series is called "Rough". A teacher explains to the students that they are all like rough drawings at the beginning of their school career. By continuous sketching, wiping and redrawing, exercising etc they'll become a beautiful drawing (remark the self-criticism of Adachi).

A lot of guys are running after Ami, but they don't have much success. Ogata is really surprised to learn that Ami has inquired about Keisuke. He, as the star of middle school baseball has never even succeeded in getting a date with Ami, but Keisuke who she barely knows...

Meanwhile, Narita doesn't cope very well with his loss of authority. While preparing a reunion, Ami accidentally falls over Keisuke but she doesn't recognize him (a bucket falls over his ears :)). Keisuke notices that she can be quite friendly, he even gets her handkerchief to clean him up. {PVH}

Hoohoo to Heehee
[Hoho and Hehe]
Keisuke returns home for clean underwear. At home, his mother tells him why the Ninomiya-clan has a grudge against the Yamato-clan. Both families are confectionary shops, and have been trying to defeat each others for generations. Two generations ago, Ninomiya grandfather came up with an idea of an owl-shaped cake (called Hoohoo), but Yamato grandfather quickly thought of a similar thing but with ears (called Heehee). Because they were of same price and the Yamato's ones has extra ears, the business of Ninomiya suffered, and Ninomiya grandfather fell ill consequently, worrying about his business. Before his death, his last words were "I was killed by the Yamato's". This put the two families in extreme enemy situation. The same generations confront each other. Keisuke, being the third generation now understands better why he receives since ten years a new years greeting card from a certain Ninomiya Ami with the word "murderer" on it. {PVH}

[Standing is forbidden]
It's forbidden for the male students to stand in front of the girls dorm. The swimming coach begins a conversation with Ami, but she jilts him the moment he begins about Keisuke being his hope for winning the trophy in swimming.

There is an intruder in the girls dorm! Nobody seems to know who it is, but in the male dorm, Kitano remarks that Seki is missing. Ami is taken by surprise by the unknown intruder. {PVH}

Nangatsu umare?
[In what month were you born?]
It is Seki who is the intruder (a great "VHS"-joke here). He makes up the lamest excuse for being in the girls dorm and Ami falls for it (it's in his horoscope). She even helps him escape and gives him a box of sweets to share with his friends. Back at the boys dorm, Seki shares the owl-shaped sweets (a box of Hoohoo) with his friends, and sees that Keisuke has also brought a present from home (a box of Heehee). The guys are surprised that Keisuke knows Seki's box is a present from Ami. {PVH}

Ato de Hanashi ga aru
[We'll talk later]
Keisuke plays the same kind of trick on Ami as she did in the third chapter. After this, he says to her that they need to talk later on. The animosity between the two is clear. Seki is practicing basketball and his team mates envy him for the gang of girls that is cheering for him at the side-line. Seki on the other hand has only thoughts for Ami at the moment.

The coach has been letting Keisuke work his butt off. Keisuke, who is very tired, is hiding for the coach who wants him to continue the menue. He hides in a locker and... falls asleep. The coach of the girls' swimming team orders the lockers to be moved to the girls' changing room (with the sleeping Keisuke in it). Keisuke awakes and can't believe his eyes when looking through the grating. When he hears that the girls have left, he jumps out of the locker. Unfortunately, there was still one girl left changing clothes, and, as you can guess, that girl happens to be Ami. Keisuke tells her the truth, but she doesn't believe him of course (unlike when she believed Seki's lies). A slap is Keisuke's reward.

Yamato Suiei Kyoushitsu
[The Yamato Swimming Class]
There is a flood of new applicants for the swimming club. They all are attracted by the swimmingsuit sight of Minomiya Ami of course. Decided was to let only those who succeed in a physical strength test enter. The only one who succeeds in the harsh tests is Seki Kazuaki (the dorm-intruder), and his goal is obvious. Keisuke is nominated to be his instructor. He is not too pleased with this, moreover Seki doesn't know how to swim! Keisuke: "Coach, are we going to start a swim teaching class now?" Coach: "Indeed, the Yamato swim teaching class." Keisuke must give the example and swims 50 meter crawl. The coach forgets to time it. {PVH}

[That Pervert]
Ami succeeds in making Keisuke look like a pervert. He gets clobbered for this by his friends. Being in a bad mood he first throws away the handkerchief he got from Ami, but retrieves it later. At the swimming pool he likes to begin Seki's training as soon as possible but Seki has only eyes for Ami. This is quite annoying, because Keisuke cannot practice until he has taught Seki how to swim. She says to Seki that it was she who made him look like a pervert, but Seki doesn't believe her. {PVH}

Wa ga Ryou no Dentougyouji
[Our dorm's traditional event]
In his room, Keisuke is reading an article about his rival, Serizawa Yuuji. Kume enters and takes a look through a set of binoculars at the girls dorm (used a lot already those binocs). He sees they are organising a lottery and that it is a certain girl called Tanuma who wins (Tanuma is an ugly and fat girl). At that moment, in the male dorm, Narita calls all newcomer dorm inhabitants for the announcement of an event organized every year. The "ichinichi deeto no bi" (one day date-event). This is a yearly event organized to bring the dorms closer together. The rules: only newcomers will participate, and only one will be chosen to go. So they'll have a "draw the straw" to decide who'll be the lucky partner. The one who has the straw that colors red when licking it is the winner. Kume is the winner, but he remembers it is that ugly girl who won at the girls dorm and so he switches his straw with that from Keisuke who isn't very interested and threw his straw away. And so, to his own surprise, it is Keisuke who'll be the male victim.

In the evening, at the girls' dorm, Tanuma slips in the bathroom and falls unconscious, moreover she catches a cold. So she asks to Ami to go in her place if she can't make it. Ami says that won't be necessary because it's a really good medicine. {PVH}

Hachiji made Futarikiri
[Together Alone until Eight]
At the boys' dorm, the guys are teasing Keisuke. Not all the new girls are cute, they say. It is possible you'll go on a date with an uncute girl. What is worse, he won't be able to escape and so they'll have to date until eight o'clock, otherwise they'll be on cleaning duty for three months and the event will be abolished from then on. When Keisuke goes for the date, Kume says to the others that he knows the date-girl is a real ugly one. And so we see Keisuke heading for the meeting place.

The gong of doom sounds when Keisuke and AMI find each other at that place. Reason: Tanuma's cold has healed, but she fell from the stairs now and broke her foot.

Meanwhile, Ami has a problem: how to escape this ordeal? Her first date, and with one from the Yamato-clan to boot. She isn't very willing to let this happen and that gets Keisuke really annoyed. How can she judge a person only by his name? He understands there is no reasoning possible and is ready to accept the punishment for skipping this date. At the dorm the guys wonder what girl is shouting so loudly. Kume gets a big surprise when he sees Tanuma calling out her grief from her window.

"Bi" no Saiten
[The grades of "beauty"]
Ami has decided to tag along (doesn't want to get a bad name) but is not very cooperative. Keisuke berates her and says that they can as well quit if she can't behave somewhat more human. In the park, they pass a couple of which the girl seems to recognize Keisuke. "Giving points?" asks Ami, but Keisuke explains that it is his ex-girlfriend from middle school. The next step in the date is finding a suitable coffee shop. By coincidence, the ex-girlfriend is also there. Keisuke says one of the reasons their relation broke off was the difference in family status (she being the daughter of a cosmetics-tycoon). Ami goes to the toilet and there she is berated by the ex-girlfriend who apparently still hasn't gotten over their past relation. {PVH}

Yamato-ke no Chounan
[The oldest son of the Yamato's]
In the coffee shop, Ami and Keisuke don't have much to say to each other. Keisuke wants to start a discussion regarding the grudge Ami's family apparently has against his and more specifically regarding himself. She certainly proves that she knows a great deal about her enemy. Keisuke doesn't like that a bit.

Having left the coffee shop, they continue their day against their will. At a busstop an old man is sitting quietly on a bench. Suddenly, the man begins to cough and throws up what seems to be blood. Ami and Keisuke try to help him but it seems the old man simply was drinking tomato-juice and that he can't hold that stuff. The three get into a conversation and the man asks to Ami if she could buy him a orange juice, because he has been walking a long distance and is now too tired to continue. While Ami is away, Keisuke and the old man continue talking. When Keisuke finally mentions his and Ami's name to the man, he starts coughing and seems surprised. {PVH}

Donna Pantsu?
[What Pants?]
The old man continues following Ami and Keisuke. Suddenly a couple of punks throw him on the ground. Ami intervenes and tells the punks to apologize. Now she is getting herself into trouble and she looks for Keisuke. Keisuke, who didn't want to intervene when the old man was harrassed is still reluctant to. Right at the moment that he wants to enter the fight, he sees the punks being thrown in the air. The old man is apparently not a normal old man. When seeing the old man into action, Keisuke gets a couple of flashbacks that he cannot place exactly. The punks go away saying that they'll take revenge. Suddenly, the old man shouts that he can't find his purse anymore. Maybe it was stolen during the fight. Keisuke is forced to lend him some money for a taxi. The old man promises to return the money. Ami and Keisuke continue their way. Ami says to Keisuke that during the fight she had a strange feeling of nostalgia. Meanwhile, the old man in the taxi remembers where he had put his purse. He hadn't lost it after all. We see the taxi stopping at the house Keisuke has seen in his flashback. {PVH}

Oniichan?
[Brother?]
After the movie, Keisuke has only 250 yen left (he has paid for the old man's taxi). That's just enough for two cokes but absolutely insufficient to go to dinner. After a little argument, Ami says they'll be able to eat at a place she knows. She takes him to an appartment of which she has the key. Nobody seems to be home, but Keisuke soon finds out it is the home of Nakanishi Hiroki, the Japanese record-holder 100 and 200 m swimming free style. He asks her of course about this, whereupon she calls Hiroki "Oniichan (brother)". It's not her real brother, but the Nakanishi-family is befriended to the Ninomiya-family. In the past, they helped the Ninomiya's out of the troubles they had (guess what troubles). And so, Ami knows Hiroki since her childhood. Keisuke says that Nakanishi won't be record-holder anymore in two or three years and that because of Serizawa Yuuji. Ami says that Serizawa is no threat to him. Apparently, she and Nakanishi went to the Middle school finals where Serizawa and Yamato swam. Nakanishi told her that he could see at Serizawa's style the level he was at. And he concluded that Serizawa wouldn't improve anymore. Nakanishi told her also that the number three of the finals (Keisuke) was the one who he tought to be the most dangerous because of his good swimming-style. Keisuke isn't too pleased with her explanation and suddenly it has begun to rain. {PVH}

[Just wasting Time]
Being wet from the rain, they decide to stop at the swimming pool to change clothes and get an umbrella. To kill time, Keisuke decides to swim a little bit. Ami joins him soon. He still has what Nakanishi said about him on his mind and wants to know his time on the 100 m. He asks Ami to time his performance. Outside, Seki and Kume like to go for a swim, but they are sent away by a superintendant. {PVH}

Kihon kara Sutaato
[Start from the basics]
In the pool, Keisuke is still swimming his 100 m. He is surprised to swim so smoothly and so perfect. Suddenly, he realizes it is because of the training he gave to Seki. All the basic training he gave has made him also reconsider the basics, and now he is more self conscious when swimming crawl. When touching the finish, he immediately asks for his time and... sees Ami in a discussion with the superintendant who wants to know what they are doing here. After a hefty discussion between Ami and the superintendant, Keisuke convinces him that there is nothing special going on here. After that, Keisuke asks for his time. Ami: your time is 5 minutes, 36 seconds, 37 seconds, 38 seconds... Oh no, she forgot to stop the chrono (remark the mistake in the Japanese text here). After that, they leave the pool to continue their date (under an umbrella now). Ogata sees them leaving and is so surprised he walks into a door. {PVH}

Kotchi no Serifu
[That's my line]
[NO:16]
The rain has stopped and they still have almost two hours before eight o'clock. Ami asks Keisuke to carry something (she has a heavy bag and the umbrella to carry) but he refuses and tells her to carry her own things by her own. He doesn't even want to do a "janken" over it, because he has been weak at Janken his whole life. That makes Ami comment: "Jeez, what a day". Keisuke's reaction: "That's my line."

In town, they pass a merchant who is selling little baby chickens for only 250 yen. Ami wants the last one, but Keisuke was set on buying two juices with that 250 yen. So, he proposes, let's do a Janken about it. Sure enough, Keisuke looses and Ami has now her little chicken. Meanwhile, it has become eight o'clock: end of the date. On the way home, Ami remembers what Keisuke has said her about being bad at Janken. {PVH}
