Straining against Kujiranami's hand, Kenshin struggles to free himself. Sano finally finds him, and throws the brute down. Kenshin reverses his sword, and runs after Enishi, while Saitoh calmly despatches Kujiranami. Racing through the smoke, Kenshin comes upon a sight that makes him drop his sword, and fall to his knees... Kaoru's body, impaled on Enishi's sword, a scar to match Kenshin's carved into her cheek... {EIR}

Kaoru's funeral. Gein and Enishi escape, Saitoh begins an investigation to catch them. Kenshin is discovered down in the slums, his sword bound into its sheath with a chain, refusing to move. Yahiko silent grieving on the bridge is interrupted by the arrival of Misao and Aoshi. {EIR}

Though Misao is horrified by the sight of a funeral marker for Kaoru, she's more horrified by the morbidly depressive Yahiko, and keeps her composure long enough to cheer him up somewhat, grieving only when she's alone. They brought a book for Kaoru. Sano, a bag over his shoulder, comes to Kenshin once more, punching him again, and blows town. {EIR}

Misao and Yahiko are saved from a fight with the local unsavoury by an old beggar by the name of Oibore. Aoshi has a few doubts about the whole matter. Kenshin is visited in hell by Shishio, and does not respond to talk from Misao, Yahiko, and Oibore. The kids return to find Megumi nearly tearing Aoshi's eyes out with horror over his suggestion. {EIR}

Aoshi explains his theory that 'Kaoru' was really one of Gein's dolls, and he convinces Yahiko to help him dig up her grave. Opening the casket, and slicing open her back, they find that the 'body' is filled with cables... The real Kaoru awakes in a strange bed. {EIR}

Saitoh still needs more information. Yahiko's brilliant strategy to gain admittance fails to fool Saitoh, who also already knows Kaoru is still alive. Saitoh is impressed enough that he tells Yahiko where he thinks the hideout may be, and the two kids rush off to search. Saitoh and Aoshi begin to discuss serious buisness... and Kujiranami begins to awaken. A ferry arrives at Enishi's island. {EIR}

Kaoru plans her escape... by taking Enishi hostage. Gein has a run in with the sardonic Heishin, who's ferry it was. Heishin has four massive bodyguards. He meets with Enishi briefly. Kaoru approaches to try her foolish plan, and Enishi goes into some sort of spasming fit, begging Tomoe to smile, and nearly choking Kaoru. Though Heishin instructed his crew to kill Gein, Gein easily tears through them... {EIR}

Yahiko and Misao are fruitlessly searching everywhere. Kaoru begins cooking for Enishi, for lack of anything better to do. The kids run into old man Oibore once more. He reveals that he lost a daughter in the last war... as Gein digs up Kaoru's grave, he's surprised to find it is booby trapped. Aoshi lays in waiting, and the two prepare for battle. {EIR}

Kuroi shouzoku no futari (Kouhen)
Gein lands in a tree, which Aoshi promptly cuts it down. Gein catches Aoshi within a gasoline soaked spiderweb, but Aoshi fires one of his sword into Gein with the other, and drags him down into the fire by means of a string attached to one of them... as Saitoh investigates the fire, Aoshi stands up from underneath the rubble. {EIR}
