What's Michael
What’s・Michael
serialized on Morning, 1984-19(?)
bunko 8 volumes @ Y400
[ 01:9412| 02:9412| 03:9502| 04:9502| 05:9503| 06:9503| 07:9504| 08:9504]
A humoristic series with cats as the topic. Michael is in fact the name of the yellow tabby cat that appears the most in this series, although there are stories featuring other cats. But the cats in this story are not exactly normal housecats. They frequently take on human characteristics, often used to parody the human world. The series had a lot of success which is why Kobayashi was forced to continue it, although he wanted to end it sooner. Apparently, Kobayashi made up the title for the series when he was looking at a book about Turkish baths ("What's Toruko?") while listening to music of Michael Jackson. {010}

A humorous story about the daily interaction between cats and humans. Michael, the hero, is undoubtedly a cat, but the episodes also reflect human attitudes as if the cats were the mirror image of this "superior" species. One day, Michael appears in an apartment room of cartoonist Makoto Kobayashi. From that day on, Kobayashi and his wife struggle to get along with Michael. Here is a conflict between a cat who wants to do his own thing and the humans who want to change it. Michael is just an ordinary cat. Free, nonchalant, and lazy-the envy of the busy humans around him. But he has his own problems being a cat, such as getting along with Nyazilla, a really ferocious feline. Nyazilla even scares dogs, so of course he scares Michael as well! {020}

A sequel to 1,2 no Sanshirou. When Sanshirou returned from USA after thousand matches, his company 'Shin Toukyou wrestling' was convicted to bankrupcy. Therefore he had to work as a head of a family restaurant for two years. One day his ex-colleague came to see him at the restaurant. He asked Sanshirou to return to the ring to defeat the present top star who had been Sanshirou's sparring partner, an offer which Sanshirou rejected. But at last Sanshirou returned, and came to match him. This is Kobayashi's masterpiece. I think this would be more popular and famous without Slam Dunk. All of his humor style is fused in this work. You will find some 'cruel, tragic' or 'sad' scenes, but they help the comic factors remarkably like other good comedies.
The title '1,2 no Sanshirou' is perhaps from the wrestling count '1, 2, 3, 4..' (San=three, shi=four in the Japanese kanji pronunciation) {YRL}

I am Makkoi

2 volumes @ Y686
[ 01:9908| 02:9908]
The hero of this story inherits a vast amount of money from his parents, but he spends it all. He has to run away in order to avoid his creditors, yakuza, etc.

Kobayashi said the idea for this manga came to him after his first trip to New York, the basic story line was created about 10 years before the manga began serializing. {YRL}

Miss Hello
published by Koudansha, 1992-94
1 volume @ Y?
[ 01:____]
Miss Hattori Haruo is from the countryside, now a freshman of a university in Toukyou. Unfortunately, a male apparition appears everyday at her room in university dorm. He died unmarried (and a virgin), and is now teasing her and even masturbates in front of her. She moves out of her room and moves in with her friend, while doing a part-time job as a Ginza bar woman. On her first day she was called 'Hello' instead of Haruo and that becomes her nickname. She is admired by the customers for her simplicity, kindheartedness, and for the dialect she speaks. Some of them even propose to her, but she has sworn...

This is a nice series. It's a light and warm comedy. Frankly speaking I think "1,2 no Sanshiro II" is better than this, nevertheless this is still good and humorous manga. {YRL}

Chichonmanchi [Hell of Love & Ecstasy]

5 volumes @ Y505
[ 01:9901| 02:9907| 03:9912| 04:0007| 05:0012|
Story of a woman who died as a virgin. She is taught love at the 'Pleasure Hell' named Chichionmanchi. Comedy depicting her sexual adventures. {YRL}

"Chiya Minakami lived the life of a saint. Until her death at 92, she was dedicated to the care of children inflicted with serious disease. Convinced that she had done enough to go straight to heaven, she is surprised by the Prince of Hades. "How can you expect to have enough experience of love when you remained a virgin all your life? We shall give you the body of an 18-year-old girl and dispatch you to 'Chichonmanchi' - our pleasure hell - where you may learn something about loving." Chiya is thus given a young and voluptuous body and sent to the strange, magical home of weird beasts and erotic flora. Her flesh may be young, but her mind remains old, stubborn and guided by nineteenth-century morality. "How disgusting! One is not amused by this place." Can Chiya pass the entrance test to heaven? A sex comedy like nothing you have seen before." {020}

Judou-bu Monogatari [The Judo club story]
serialized on Young Magazine,
11 volumes @ Y485
[ 01:____| 02:8709| 03:8802| 04:____| 05:8906| 06:8911| 07:9003| 08:9008| 09:9101]
[ 10:9104| 11:9108]
bunko 7 volumes @ Y650
[ 01:9902| 02:9902| 03:9903| 04:9903| 05:9904| 06:9904| 07:9905]
The hero was interested in the Judo club because he believed the saying "There are many cute girls". But in vain, and what waited for him there was 'cruel' senpai (seniors) and severe training. But he did not quit the club, and grew to an able Judo expert. This is Kobayashi's first hit work. I think it is somewhat less mature in his style - story, humor, and drawings - than his later works. So, I want to recommend URASAWA Naoki's Yawara! rather than this if you want to read a Judo manga. {YRL}
