Akisato Wakuni 秋里和国
[born: 22 Sep 1960, Kanagawa-prefecture, Yokohama ; bloodtype: O]
Akisato made her debut in 1982 with "Senaka ni Hana wo shotte" on Shuukan
Shoujo Comic.
According to herself she doesn't like drawing but she wants to tell stories her
way. She's well-known for her unusual story-twists and her good sense of
humour. Akisato's works, romantic or not, may also appeal to many readers who
don't necessarily like shoujo-manga, but also should be read with care by
people who have problems with homosexuality. {DHI}

B.B.B. stands for "Bakkure Berkeley Boy".
Well well, if Tomomi only knew. When she first saw her new brother-in-law,
Shishimaru, at age 10 she at once decided that he looks like a faggot and
she has to do something about it! So she got him interested in football,
he went to the USA to study football... and now he's back, still looks
extremely effeminated and Tomomi falls for him! But what's about this
best friend, who came along with Shishimaru, Guy, who acts so extremely
protective towards to Shishimaru? Is he Shishimaru's boyfriend? Sort of...
just that Shishimaru doesn't know anything about it. And so a really weird
love-triangle starts between those three persons.
The B.B.B. is one of Akisato's most popular works and tells the usual
weird story she is so famous for. Unfortunately this time not all is done
as well as usual. Tomomi is one annoying chick with all her homophobia and
Shishimaru's sometimes is dumb as a brick.
It's also one of Akisato's first stories that have a happy end. Or rather
it seemed as if Akisato tried to satisfy everyone... unfortunately it
didn't work well. The B.B.B. actually is quite an amusing story.
Akisato's humor works well as usual but it might take sometime until you
figure out that Akisato hid some interesting messages in this work. {DHI}

Sakami leads a very normal life (except maybe for the fact that somehow
her parents switched traditional gender roles). Until she meets Daiji
and his best friends Shirou and Tenkuu. At first she can't stand them
one bit but gradually she becomes their friend and a member of
this trio. However, each of the boys has a very unusual problem and the
now starting love-triangle is going to be quite something for all of them.
It wouldn't be an Akisato of course, if the main focus would be entirely
on the love-triangle and so she adds a huge deal of weirdness and humor
to her work as usual. Soredemo... is a great and funny read that doesn't
follow any genre standards at any time and always surprises the reader...
especially in the end...! {DHI}

The 1996 bunko edition is a very good buy, because it contains both the
old 'Nemureru Mori no Binan' and its sequel 'Tomoi'.

Due to a childhood trauma Keiko has a really bad Gaijin Complex. She can't
even stand the looks of blonde and blue-eyed people! Luckily of course
there aren't that much people around in Japan, and so Keiko can live more
or less happily waiting for the return of her big love Takara from the
U.S.A. Eventually he does return but there's some small surprise for
Keiko: He has a blonde and blue-eyed stepbrother! And he seems to be very
interested in Keiko. There are many other interesting and very funny
characters, and this series is actually refreshingly different from common
love triangle stories with sometimes weird, sometimes dramatic twists and
an excellent sense of situation-comedy. {DHI}

1982. Tomoi Hisatsugu went to New York to work as a doctor. But that's
not all. He hopes to lead an easier life as a young homosexual than
in Japan. Indeed, he meets another doctor, Richard Stein, and they
become lovers. Nemureru Mori no Binan tells of their relationship in
an extremely realistic way. It portrays the life of homosexuals in the
early 80s very exact and conveys the mood of the secrecy gays and
lesbians had to live in well. It is also a very down to earth story with
characters that could meet in the street every day and doesn't use the
elements so common in today's Shounen'ai-Manga. One of Akisato's very
best works and highly recommended. Prequel to 'Tomoi'. {DHI}

Hiyama, a very close friend of Shuuya died. Shuuya is devastated. Not only
because his friend died, also because his father doesn't recognize him as
what he is after all. He *is* a really good jockey but nobody except his
sister seems to care. When Shuuya is in France he meets the world-class
jockey Jean-Paul and there is a certain attraction between the two men
from the start. Gradually a love-relationship starts, but one of the more
complicated kind.
Third in Akisato's Shounen'ai-series. It's barely close to the realism
Nemureru Mori no Binan had, but it has a gentle kind of atmosphere and is
a very beautiful romance. The story-telling is differently paced than
usual, with a lot of text (which reads like a novel) and a very quiet
mood and little whimsicalness. It also succeeds in showing the intolerance
towards homosexuality which does add a little bit of realism after all.
But, whether there is realism or not, Banbutsu... is a readable romance.
