Hagio Moto 萩尾望都

[born: 12 May 1949, Fukuoka-prefecture; bloodtype: ?]

She made her debut 1969 with "Ruru to Mimi" (Lulu and Mimi) in Nakayoshi. She's one of the most famous shoujo-mangaka in history and the one who virtually invented the shounen'ai-manga. {DHI}

She states that she was inspired to become a mangaka by reading the manga "Shinsengumi" by Osamu Tezuka. Hagio Moto is considered by many to be the female version of Tezuka. She's also part of the group known as "Magnificent Twenty-Four-Year Group" (mangaka born in Showa 24), a group of talented female mangaka who revolutionized the shoujo genre, by introducing issues as gender and sexuality.

Four stories, loosely connected by the presence of members of the unicorn race (human mutants with strange psyches and androgynous beauty). The main themes are the nature of self and the difficulty of communication between people. Fans of Hagio Moto will recognize many of her favorite plot twists. For instance: the first story is about a girl who dies in an isolated research base on a distant planet. A clone with her memories (up to two years before her death) is sent to replace her. But... how will her lover and her friends deal with this new "her" who is not really "herself"? By the way, the English translation is by Matt Thorn, which is always a good point. {PAU}

The first story was in A-A' was first serialized on Princess in 1981.

Hagio's longest work yet. About a boy who was sexually abused by his father as child. Deals with themes like sexual abuse and the realizing of homosexuality in a very sensitive and realistic way. {DHI}

"A dark and very powerful drama about a boy, Jeremy, who's sexually abused by his new step-father, Greg, and how he's finally driven to murder him by tampering with his car. The catch is that his mother, Sandra was with Greg when the accident happened so she was also killed. So even in death, Greg continues to haunt Jeremy who finds himself consumed by guilt and spiraling even more deeply into murderous intrigues when Ian, Greg's natural son, starts becoming suspicious about his father's death. Things get even more complicated when Ian discovers the dark truth about his own father and finds himself falling in love with his father's murderer. This series is a MUST for Hagio fans, and even for non-Hagio fans, you'll find yourself worshipping Ian!!!! He's totally gorgeous and very protective of Jeremy but not in that nauseating "knight on white horse protecting damsel in distress" type of thing. And the visuals--the imageries are fantastic! The setting is upper class England with its acres of woodland on private family grounds and privileged boarding schools so Hagio has incorporated a flora motif (with a sinister twist, and not floral) into the manga. Again, Hagio, being a rather ancient author, doesn't draw the eye-candy art that we're more used to seeing from mainstream authors carried by Biblos, Tousuisha, Outoushobou etc. Plus, Hagio's art has become more shounen-like esp after the mid 80's-early 90's. But if we're talking about creativity, and the richness/depth of the images, this newest contribution of Hagio certainly surpasses many of the stuff being offered in the current yaoi manga market. I've got to admit that I think that Hagio has dragged the series on longer than needed and that the story could have been better contained if she had ended it earlier but hey I'm not exactly going to whine if I've managed to follow the Eroica series up to its current 25th vol... A VERY HIGHLY recommended series." {KAM}
