CLAMP ‚b‚k‚`‚l‚o

[03] Nekoi Mick ”Lˆδ‚έ‚Α‚

[04] Igarashi Satsuki Œά\—’‚³‚Β‚«
[born: 8 Feb 1969, Oosaka-metropolis, Kyouto; bloodtype: A]

CLAMP is an all-female team at the forefront of today's shoujo manga. Currently, CLAMP consists of four members. Ookawa Nanase does a lot of the writing, scripting and direction. Mokona Apapa is responsible for the art, the backgrounds and the character design. Nekoi Mick is an assistant and Igarashi Satsuki is also an assistant and the cook.

The core members of CLAMP are Mokona and Okawa, workaholics who are directly responsible for such manga as RG Veda, X and Toukyou Babylon.

Originally, in their doujinshi-days, CLAMP was a group of twelve women. Because of the successes they had, seven of them decided to go professionally. The three additional members were: Nanao Sei Ž΅•δ‚Ή‚’, Hijiri Leeza Ή‚θ‚’‚΄ and Akiyama Tamayo HŽR‚½‚ά‚ζ, the latter having written DERAYD and CLUSTER with CLAMP. Akiyama is now a solo mangaka, and has completed a fourth volume of CLUSTER. Nanao Sei was the first of those three to quit the group as she saw no future in drawing anymore.

All CLAMP's manga suddenly stopped serialization for a few months in mid-1994. Officially, Ookawa was recovering from the effects of an unhealthy diet, but the probable real cause was CLAMP's dissatisfaction with the policies of Asuka's editor. Contributing to their absence was CLAMP's addiction to video games (they have portrayed themselves as fans of Streetfighter II, the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure game, and Shin-Megami Tensei ^E—_“]Ά).

After the departure of the three members, the style of CLAMP has been changing. Not so much the drawing style, but especially the stories. The first CLAMP series where darker of nature, latter series seem to radiate an intense happiness. More recently, CLAMP has broadened their horizon and made Shounen and Seinen series.

The members of CLAMP are fond of a good prank, proven by the following anecdote:
In Puff Magazine, there's every month a character poll. In order to get a character a point, you have to send in a drawing of the character, so every point is really earned. In Puff #10, 1994, "Kuujou Joutaro" character from "Jojo's bizarre adventure" suddenly tops the poll, and the reason... Clamp confessed that they have been drawing entries to the Puff poll to make Kuujou Joutarou from Jojo No.1 in the poll! Well, they made it! The character had 210 entries and topped the poll, and from what they said, I figured that nearly all entries were done by Clamp! Some of the drawings and messages were published, and they are so funny... Even the editor of Puff was very surprised by the postcards mountain from Clamp. He said there must be more than 50 entries from each member. {CMA}

Although CLAMP borrowed ideas and names from Hindu/Buddhist mythology, RG Veda has very little to do with them in terms of story. This manga is CLAMP's first major work and its story and art gets better and better with each volume. RG Veda redefined the state-of-the-art in shoujo manga. The story: three hundred years ago, the god-of-war was beaten by Taishakuten. Now, Taishakuten has become the emperor of the heavens. Prophecy says that six dark stars will assemble and destroy the heavens. Will Yashaou be able to fulfill that prophecy?

They usually fight against weird named monsters from the "organisation" - Imonoyama Shoutenkai led by Sukiyabashi Kotobuki, whose normal form is the classmate of Kentarou and Takeshi. A fun manga although not as good as CLAMP Campus Detective Service.

Opposing factions known as 'the seven seals' and 'the seven messengers' begin to gather around a boy called Kamui. Kamui is prophesied to hold the key to the earth's fate, to be decided on the day of Revelation, in 1999. An occult/action manga with superb art, complex plots and intriguing characters. It takes place in the same universe as Toukyou Babylon and CLAMP Campus Detective Team, and is scheduled to run for 20 volumes.

According to Okawa, 'X' was chosen as the title because its associations with crucifixion, crossroads, the unknown quantity, etc. A two minute "image anime" based on X, Double X, has been released. It gives a taste of the high-budget X movie, originally scheduled for completion in 1995.

Attentive readers will note many references to Kujaku-Oh, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (for example, Inuki="stand") and video games.

"Please save the world, the legendary Magic Knights..." Summoned by the Emerald Princess, Shidou Hikaru, Ryuusaki Umi and Hououji Fuu (all 14 years old) met each other in their field trip of fate at Toukyou Tower and entered another dimension where they are the chosen Magic Knights. They received power and skills and weapons, and their mission is to save the world. This started their journey, meeting all sorts of strange people and weird animals, and fighting against the enemy. Hikaru befriended a rabbit-like thingy called "Mokona". This manga is drawn in an RPG game style targeted at girl readers in junior highschool. Nice art work (of course!) with story emphasising friendship among girls. Its popularity in Nakayoshi outshines other manga, and is comparable to Sailor Moon. (It is heavily supported by merchandising, the main reason why it continued running throughout CLAMP's "strike" of 1994.)

The anime series could be classified under the "magical girl" genre, though it doesn't exactly qualify the definition of what constitutes such a series.

serialized on Newtype, 1993-present.
A parody of Alice in Wonderland, and the source of the title for CLAMP's 1994 CLAMP in Wonderland event. A 7-minute anime, commissioned from Sony and Mad House with their own money, was shown at the event. The characters in the anime include Kamui (X), the Rayearth knights, the three CLAMP detectives, Subaru (Toukyou Babylon), Ashura (Rg Veda), and a cameo from Kujo Jotaro (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure). Despite the title and CLAMP's reputation, this manga shows us another side of CLAMP: etchi and parodying.

It's futuristic... where personal computers really are "person"al computers... more to the point, they're girls/boys/men. Anyway, you've got one guy who's a rounin with a crush on the manageress of his flat, (parodying Maison Ikkoku) working in a bar to support himself. He wants a computer, because he thinks it'd be cool, and then he finds a girl in a garbage dump... who it turns out is a computer herself... and then there seems to be something wrong with her... as in she can only say "chii" and when she's being accessed, it shows that she has "no data", but she's fully functioning... PC doctors can't figure out whether she has an OS or not, but she must have because she's moving around. And at least her learning program is working as she gradually learns words.
Chobits is a seinen manga, by the way... runs in weekly young magazine. There's also a limited edition which is a bit more expensive than the regular edition (Y850). But for that money, you get a chobits postcard and a mousepad with it... that's right, I said mousepad! (same size as the book, by the way)... when I first took off the plastic wrapping, though, my first thought was, "this doesn't smell like a new book! it smells like a new pair of shoes!" {DCD}

"This story takes place in a "Parallel World." Hideki Motosuwa is young and poor. He's already flunked his college entrance exam once - but has decided to try again. One day, he finds a cute computer-girl in the garbage disposal near his house. He calls her Chi. Chi doesn't have any operating system, so he asks his friend, Shinbo to help him out. Shinbo's laptop, "Sumomo," crashes when Chi is connected. Hideki tries Minoru Kokubunji next. Minoru is a computer expert. Hideki learns that Chi might be "Chobits," a legendary computer. Sexy ladies - Ms. Hibiya, the superintendent of Hideki's apartment building, Yumi, a co-worker, Ms. Shimizu, a cram-school make teacher - excite Hideki. Is Chi really "Chobits"? What is hidden in her past?" {020}

Gouhou Drug [Legal Drug]
3 volumes @ Y?
serialized on Asuka Comics DX,
[ 01:____| 02:____| 03:____]
Magazine serialization of this title has been bumpy to say the least. Gouhou Drug began running in the November of 2000 issue of "Mystery DX", which is a monthly shoujo manga magazine published by Kadokawa Shoten. In July of 2001 it switched to the ill-fated "Shoujo Teikoku" magazine where it ran for four months before the magazine's suspension in November of 2001. Fans feared the the series would stay unfinished, but serialization was picked up again in June of 2002 issue of "Asuka", making the magazine sporting two CLAMP titles at the same time, because X has been in it for 11 years then. August of 2003 "Asuka" saw the last of Gouhou Drug's magazine serialization for five months while the series was on hold. At the end of 2003 CLAMP removed Gouhou Drug from their newssection of their site, which is a good indication that they were no longer working on the series. Today, beginning of 2004, it still remains to be seen if the series will be continued.

Gouhou Drug is not a shounen'ai series, but it comes close, just like Tokyo Babylon did.
The story revolves around a pharmacy. Homeless Kazahaya almost freezes to death in the snow on Christmas Eve. He's saved by Rikuou and taken to the drugstore (Midori Yakkyoku = Green Drugstore) where Rikuou works. Kakei, the manager of the store takes Kazahaya in and gives him a place to live. On the condition that he starts working at the store to earn his rent. It turns out that Rikuou has a ESP power (telekinesis) and Kazahaya too (clairvoyance). Kakei uses them and their power for special jobs, which means they mostly have to retrieve special items for Kakei. The two agree to those jobs because they need the money, otherwise they wouldn't do it because they don't like each other.
