A highly praised and highly classic shoujo manga. Yamagishi turns Japanese history on its head adding a lot of shounen'ai and supernatural elements. It has been ranked the second favorite shoujo manga of all time in 1991.

"I can highly recommend this work for people who are interested in something that's not your typical PWP yaoi story because the main chara, Umaya is one hell of a brilliant manipulator with a very complex personality. Considered as one of THE greatest shoujo classics, the story is excellent, and whatever is your kink, it's there, i.e. yaoi, murder, shouta, betrayal, incest, ESP, drag etc etc. Umaya is the nickname of a real historical figure, the great Prince Shotoku who was responsible for adopting Buddhism and creating the constitution that shaped much of the Japanese government and the divine rights of the Emperor. A friend told me that his face is on one of the Japanese yen bank notes. Anyway, the manga chronicles the events and people who helped to mold Umaya into the great Shotoku and concentrates on the love and relationship that Umaya had with Emishi (the son of Umako of the powerful Soga family). It also tells of some of the heartbreaking losses and cold sacrifices that Umaya made to ensure his position as the all powerful Regent under Empress Suiko. As for the art, it's a bit archaic because Yamagishi is a pretty ancient author so it's not exactly eye candy and somewhat needs getting used to, but it does improve as the series progresses. To tell you the truth, I think that Yamagishi's art style probably peaked in this series (judging from the other 3 works of her that I've got, i.e. "Arabesque", "Yousei-ou" and
