The manga appeared at first in Shounen Ace, eight months before the beginning of the TV series. Although manga and anime have of course the same roots and tell basically the same story, the way it is depicted in the manga greatly differs. You aren't buying an anime comic when buying the manga! In volume 4, Asuka enters in the picture. Remark: the literal transcription of the Japanese title is: New Century Evangelion. Sadamoto has expressed his will to continue the manga to the end, even though at the pace it is being published (a monthly magazine), it will take some years before the story ends. He doesn't know yet if the end will be different from the anime-ending(s). It went on hiatus in 1997-98 but resumed serialization in 1999.

For those who don't know the story: It is the year 2015, 15 years after the second impact which destroyed a substantial part of the earth. As described in the Black Sea rolls, the Angels come down on earth to take back what humanity took away. The Angels, in possession of an protective field, are invulnerable. Only the Eva robots developed by Nerv which also possess this field can combat them. The only problem is that the Eva's need to be piloted by specially selected 14 year old children. The story starts when the first Angel (it's actually the third) attacks and 14 year old Shinji Ikari prepares to go to Nerv, hoping he'll reunite with his father. Little does he know that he is destined to be the third child, piloting EVA-01 and that this is the only reason his father wants him.

Evangelion has an incredible cast. Everyone of the protagonists has been deeply scarred sometime in his/her past and while the series seems to start like a normal giant robo/sci-fi story, it becomes soon clear that it is so much more. Psychological drama, human tragedy, mystery, religion... Evangelion ties all these elements together into one series. Highly recommended.
