Miyazaki Hayao 宮崎駿

The renowned director of anime films. Anime-only credits include Famous Detective Holmes and Future Boy Conan. He has had a long association with Studio Ghibli スタジオギブリ, creators of Grave of the Firefly, Omoide Poroporo, Umi ga Kikoeru 海が聞こえる and Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko 平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ. Miyazaki's 1995 anime movie Mimi wo sumaseba 耳をすませば was adapted from a manga by Hiiragi Aoi 柊あおい (published by Shuueisha, 1990, Y370).

He started his career in 1963 as an animator at the studio Toei Douga. In 1971, he moved to A Pro together with his good friend Takahata Isao. After that, he left that studio to work for Nippon Animation, where he directed his first TV-series "Conan, Boy of the Future". In 1979, he made his big movies Laputa and Castle of Cagliostro with Tokyo Movie Shinsha. After the success of Nausicaa, he founded together with Takahata the studio Ghibli. Allmost all productions of studio Ghibli became big successes and real blockbusters.

There's absolutely no violence in most of Miyazaki's works. Miyazaki has the firm opinion on modern manga in that they contain too much violence.

Written under the Akitsu Saburo pseudonym. The manga deals with the devastation of war, betrayal, and the ugliness of the human nature in desperate situations. This contains very few dialogue bubbles and most of the text is written outside of the frames.

An all-watercolor manga which looks more like a miniature roman album than a manga; considered to be a Nausicaa prototype by some. It's based on a Tibetan folktale about a prince's journey to find wheat for his people.

Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war. Several fantasy-medieval style kingdoms struggle to survive. Princess Nausicaa of one of those kingdoms can communicate with all creatures. In a try to save first the kingdom, and ultimately the whole world she becomes the messias of the prophecies. In 1984, Miyazaki stopped with the story to work on the animated version of Nausicaa. After the overwhelming success of the film, he had a lot of problems in finishing the manga-version, which was very irregularly published from that point until the end in 1994. The ending of the manga is 'not' like the optimistic ending of the anime. Recommended.
