A pretty good story of a love triangle. (Actually, it's more of a love quadrangle.) Kuramochi's style is always cutting-edge hip. {016}

Like many of the girls in her class, 15-year-old Shiina thinks her 23-year-old science teacher Kawano is wonderful. But what she feels for him seems much more serious than a schoolgirl crush. Is there a way she can make the evasive Kawano understand, or should she respond to the quietly persistent attentions of her boyish schoolmate, the precocious and brilliant Endou?

It's the familiar set-up for a wish-fulfilment fantasy so common in typical shoujo manga, but Kuramochi is too clear-eyed and mature a mangaka to offer cheap thrills. The settings and interactions between people in her work have an authenticity that thoughtful readers of both sexes will recognise, and her skillful staging of key scenes can transform ordinary situations into something dramatic and involving.

Indeed, Kuramochi's observation of human behaviour is so keen, her evocation of the rhythms and restrictions of everyday life so realistic, the union of Shiina and Kawano becomes not only plausible, but also unexpectedly moving when it is achieved. {SEK}

Good'ol'days shoujo manga. There's a girl, a boy, and they both play piano.

Obake Tango
serialized on Bessatsu Margaret, 1992-1993
1 volume @ Y400
[ 01:0107]
At 7 years of age, ugly ducklings Tango and Ako are the best of friends. When they are old enough, they will marry and Tango will succeed to Ako's father's hospital. But a rift opens suddenly and inexplicably between them one summer day when they meet a lovely boy, Rikurou, whom Ako is immediately drawn to. Tango and Ako quarrel and part unhappily, never to meet again. Tango dies in a car accident in which Rikurou's parents are also killed. Tango's family adopts Rikurou, who becomes Ako's fiance in Tango's place.

Years pass and they are now teenagers. Ako's consciousness of the disparity in their looks, Rikurou's popularity with other girls, and the sense that a jealous Tango is watching them, threatens their engagement. The story reaches its climax in a remarkable sequence where we see Ako's life as it would have been if Tango had survived.

A simple story told with imagination, subtlety and skill. {SEK}
