The are genealogical notes which can surely contain errors and give misleading impressions. It should be pointed out that this particular branch of my family is one where almost all of my information has come from other researchers, and I have found it difficult to add to their good work. I must especially thank Alec Heath, Raelene Fittkau, Kevin of the Kevin's Tree website, Christina Harrison and Annette Hall. It must also be said that I've had wonderful help from Mrs Lyn Scadding of Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service.

Sarah Knight is the maternal grandmother of my maternal great grandmother, Evelyn Ross, whose other ancestors are discussed on another webpage. She married Henry Thompson 6 May 1869, at the Church of St Thomas, Port Macquarie, New South Wales. They had a family at Mosquito Island over the river from Newscastle, and she died there 25 Jul 1876. She had been born in Bedfordshire, and she came to Australia with her parents and siblings.
The Knight family had arrived in Sydney, NSW, on 25 February 1855 as assisted immigrants. They had paid one pound to sail on the ship Bengal which had left Southhampton, England on 17 November 1854, with 269 Government immigrants. The ship was under the command of Captain Oates, who was also the agent. Nine deaths occurred during the voyage - six from scarlet fever - and the ship was quarantined for a few days.
According to immigration records, the family were Calvinists. Thomas Knight, Sarah's father could neither read not write; Mary his wife could read; and all the children could read and write. They had no relations in the Colony. Their state of health etc was good; they had no complaints about the voyage.
Thomas Knight was employed as a farm labourer in the Dungog area at first, then at Woola Brush, Manning River. Later the family journeyed by bullock team to Rawdon Island (on the Hastings River, NSW) where they remained for a number of years. Finally, they settled at Throsby Street, Wickham (a suburb of Newcastle). Some of the elder members of the family remained in the Manning Area.
Thomas was a farm labourer in Dungog at a place called Brandon Grove, about 19 miles from Dungog. They then moved to Rawdon Island near Wauchope in New South Wales. They finally settled at Wickham. He died aged 84 years of cardiac dropsy on 22 August 1902 at Throsby Street, Wickham. He was buried 23 Aug 1902 Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle.
Thomas Knight of Westoning, Bedfordshire, had married Mary Denton in her nearby Bedfordshire, town of Harlington, 31 May 1841. At the time, according to the IGI he was 23 and she was 19. The father of the groom was named John. They seem to appear as a married couple that year in the 1841 census for Westoning, living in the village. However, the surname given is Night. They were said to be 20 and 18, and both born in the county. He is said to be a labourer. (Next door is his married brother William, discussed below.) The 1851 census confirms that Thomas, 31 years old, was born in Westoning, like his first 3 children, and Mary, 27 years old, was born in Harlington. Thomas was an agricultural labourer.
Sarah was one of the last children born in England. The full list of siblings appears to be as follows...
1. George KNIGHT b. About 1843 (IGI says 3 Sept) in Westoning, Bedfordshire, England. Labourer on the Railway. Died 5 Mar 1927, 25 Harrison St, Wickham, Newcastle.
He married twice, to Charlotte Stark 29 Oct 1868, with whom he had 8 children, and to Grace Hughes in 1890 after the passing away of Charlotte, with whom he had another 2 children. According to Judith Smith, complier of many notes on this family (which I have via Alec), The first family did not get on with their stepmother.
2. Charles KNIGHT b. 1845 in Westoning, Bedfordshire, England.
3. Sarah KNIGHT b. 1850 in Westoning, Bedfordshire, England
4. Elizabeth 'Betsy' KNIGHT b. 24 Nov 1851 in Westoning, Bedfordshire, England. Married Lawrence Meldrum, 10 Aug 1871, Hastings River.
5. Susan KNIGHT b. 1856 in Bandon Grove, Dungog, New South Wales. Married William Fowler, 8 Jul 1874, Hastings River.
6. Thomas KNIGHT b. About 1857 in Bandon Grove, Dungog, New South Wales. Married Margaret Meldrum, 13 Jan 1887, Newcastle.
7. Emma KNIGHT b. 1860 in New South Wales, Australia. Married Timothy Oakley, 11 Apr 1887, Newcastle.
8. Jane KNIGHT b. 1862 in New South Wales, Australia. Married George Alder in 1882.
Thomas died 22 Aug 1902 in Wickham (Newcastle). Mary died 28 Oct 1897 in the same place.
The family of Thomas Knight
As seen above, Thomas Knight was born in Westoning, probably around 1818-1820, and given that he was said to be Calvinist, he was probably in a family that was non-conformist and protestant, at least some of the time. This corresponds to a baptism at the Westoning Baptist Church, which very happily gives the mother's surname and even her father's name, meaning we can trace this couple back to their original Anglican wedding.
Betsy Cook married John Knight, a ploughman, on 15 October, 1805 at Westoning, Befordshire. It seems neither could read or write. The witnesses were William Baker and Joseph Chew, the latter apparently the parish clerk. The Anglican baptised children appearing in the registers are the first 3...
1. Jemima Knight. Born 12 June 1805, and baptised 27 July 1805. d/o John and Elizabeth Knight.
Probably married William Isaacs of Streatly, 26 March 1826 in Westoning
2. William Knight. Baptised 30 April 1809. s/o John and Elizabeth Knight
Married Elizabeth and had children, at least Emma, John and Joseph
3. Rebecca Knight. Baptised 19 January 1812. d/o John and Elizabeth Knight.
Married Ruben Cox 13 July 1838, in Westoning
4. Mary Knight. Baptzied 22 July 1814. d/o John and Elizabeth Knight (daughter of Francis Cook)
5. Thomas Knight. Baptized 6 April 1818. s/o John and Elizabeth Knight (daughter of Francis Cook)
6. A Joseph Knight can be added to this list, born about 1823.
A Joseph Knight of about this age was mentioned in the poor law records of Ampthill Union, as were the rest of this family, and was also a member of the baptist congregation. Indeed, at his marriage in 1844, his father is named as John, and described as deceased. He had children Joseph and Rhoda and died 28 Feb 1898, aged 74. Amongst the local Baptists he was said to have been called by grace at about the age of 20.
In 1841 John and Elizabeth both appear in the village of Westoning, with the spelling Night. They are said to be about 60 years old. Joseph, 18, is still living with them, as is one Rebeca Cox, 28, with her apparent children. This must be their married daughter.
The poor law records for Ampthill Union Workhouse, concerning the parish Westoning mention the family.
Pauper Description List PUAR 7/17 1835-1836
John Knight of Westoning born 1775 was amongst the able-bodied, married, a ploughman, settled in Westoning and requiring relief due to having lost work
Elizabeth Knight, wife, of Westoning, born 1779, able bodied, was a straw plaiter
William Knight, son, born 1809, able bodied and married was a labourer
Thomas Knight, my ancestor, is also listed as a son, born 1819, able bodied, single, a shepherd
Joseph Knight, as mentioned above, also seems to fit, born 1823, also an able bodied shepherd
There is also this entry, because this might be a relative of Elizabeth...
Elizabeth Cook, of Westoning, born 1761 and not able bodied. Disabled by old age, which is also the cause for her being granted relief. A Widow and a lace maker.
Application and Relief Reports PUAR 5/1 covering the period 21 Sept 1839 until 1843.
5 December 1839. Thomas Knight, 22 of Westoning, single, was allowed 7 shillings and was admitted conditionally.
On the same date. William Knight, aged 31 with wife aged 30, plus 4 daughters, received 3/- relief and was given medical aid for his wife. It was granted conditionally as he had work. The medical aid was as a loan.
19 December 1840. John Knight, aged 63, of Westoning and with wife was granted 1/6d relief and given a weekly allowance of 3/6d. Wants relief, unfit to work. The board in this case let him in the workhouse.
20 March 1841. John Knight, aged 60, of Westoning and his wife, paid 3/- weekly allowance 7/- an order given for medical aid. Confirmed 3/- a week during illness.
John also appears in the earlier P16/12 Westoning Overseers of the Poor records which cover 1794-1810. Several times he and his wife appeared to need assistance while ill, even when younger.
There is a death registration for a John Knight in Westoning (Ampthill District, Eleventh Oct 1844). He was recorded as being a labourer, 65 years old. He died of Dysuria, and the witness, who signed with a mark X, seems to be Amelia Sharman of Westoning.
Elizabeth Knight the wife of John is still alive in 1851 at the time of the census, living in the house of David Greig, farm bailiff, a widow aged 66, working as a servant. She gave her birthplace as Westoning. It appears that she may have still been alive in 1861 also, with a grand-daughter Rhodah in Goldington, a 77 year old clothes-washer and almswoman. This time she gave her birthplace as Goldington itself. Rhodah was a 10 year old straw plaiter born in Westoning. It appears Mrs Smith also found records mentioning that Elizabeth was originally from Goldington, but it is not clear to me if this was something other than this 1861 census.
As mentioned above John Knight is said NOT to have been born in the county. It is often speculated that he was from Willen in Buckinghamshire. There was a family there, who were not in the county, but nearby, but I am not aware of any stronger reason to think this. It has to be said that Knight is an extremely common name in this part of England. Here are the relevant baptisms in Willen:
14 Oct 1770 John Ward child of John & Ellen KNIGHT
18 Jun 1775 Mary dau of John & Eleanor KNIGHT
14 Dec 1777 John son of John & Eleanor KNIGHT
14 May 1780 Wm son of John & Eleanor KNIGHT
On 8 May 1829, the Willen burial registers show a burial of a John Knight, of Willen, who was 87, and Eleanor was buried in Willen 21 Jan 1781. This John seems to have remarried an Ann later in life. Ann KNIGHT aged 67 of Willen was buried 20 Oct 1818. Perhaps John and his first wife Eleanor originally moved from Cranfield in Bedfordshire. There was a marriage there 31 DEC 1750, and baptisms there for Unus 19 SEP 1756, Phoebe 26 JUL 1760 , John 24 NOV 1751 and Thomas 22 MAR 1754. In Cranfield as in Willen the mother's name seems to be both Ellen and Eleanor. The biggest problem with the Cranfield theory is the big gap between the two sets of births (perhaps they moved elsewhere for a while). One of the big problems we have is that the name Knight was quite common.
Concerning Elizabeth Cook, we have seen that her father was Francis, and was probably born in either Westoning itself or nearby Goldington. No baptism has been found, but there is a Francis Cook in both places, who may or may not be the same person. In Goldington, Francis was an Anglican who appears to have married twice, to Susan Hillyard in 1777 at Goldington, and to Mary Nottingham in Wootton in 1780 (the marriage record confirms Francis is from Goldington). Francis had children but no daughter named Elizabeth has been found. It has however been mentioned that there was an elderly Elizabeth Cook in Westoning who appears in poor law records. She also appears in the burial records for 31 December 1850, aged 88. Cook is also a very common name.
The possible siblings of Elizabeth Cook in Goldington are the following baptisms:
Mary, buried 19 April 1780, infant daughter of Francis Cook, carpenter
John, baptised 23 May 1784, son of Francis and Mary
Mary, baptised 7 May 1786, daughter of Francis and Mary, Francis apparently being a carpenter. She appears to have been buried 20 May 1788.
Mathew, baptised 26 October 1788, son of Francis and Mary. This was the same day as there was also a baptism for Michael Cook, a posthumous son of Mary Cook, pauper
David, baptised 30 October 1791, son of Francis and Mary
Francis, baptised 9 February 1794, son of Francis and ELIZABETH. This time the family has pauper status.
The family of Mary Denton
As seen above, Mary Denton was said to be born about 1822-3 in Harlington, which is the village next to Westoning. That puts her in the following series of Harlington baptisms to Mark and Sarah Denton.. (I have some extra information about this family from Christina Harrison)..
1. Mary DENTON bap. 20 Aug 1823
2. George DENTON bap. 18 Sep 1825. George 15, was still in Harlington in the 1841 census. Christina tells me he married Dinah Muckleston 28th Jul 1857 in Harlington.
3. Ann DENTON bap. 2 Mar 1828. Christina tells me she married John Armsden between Jul-Sep 1849, and died in Harlington 25th Apr 1852 aged 24yrs.
4. Solomon DENTON bap. 10 Apr 1831. Christina reports he married Emma Cartwright 21st Dec 1858 had 7 children and died between Apr-Jun 1907 in Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire.
5. Charlotte DENTON bap. 26 May 1833
6. Thomas DENTON bap. 8 Apr 1836. Christina reports he didn't marry, but he moved to Derby and lived with his brother Joseph and his family. He died Nov 1905 and is buried with Joseph in Nottingham Road Cemetery, Derby.
7. Joseph DENTON bap. 16 Jul 1837. Joseph married Martha Harris 7th Aug 1864, they had 9 children. Their 3rd born child was Elizabeth the maternal grandmother of Christina Harrison . Christina reports that he died 8th Aug 1902 in Derby. Martha died 13th Sep 1919 and is also buried in Nottingham Road Cemetery
8. Charles DENTON bap. 8 Sep 1840. Christina reports that he married Jane Harris (Martha's sister) 19th Jul 1862 in Harlington had 8 children and died in 1888 in Harlington.
Mark Denton and Sarah Waller had married in Harlington 27 November 1822. Neither seem to have been able to read or write. They had two witnesses apart from the parish clerk: Edward Gray, who signed his own name, and Sarah Crane, who signed with a mark. They were bachelor and spinster of the parish, though they married by banns.
In 1841 in Harlington, although none of the transcriptions spot it, Mark and Sarah are in Harlington, shown as 40 years old and born in the county. Ann 13, Solomon 10, Charlotte 8, Joseph 6, Thomas 4, and Charles 1, are with them.
In 1851 in Harlington, Mark and Sarah are both said to be 52, Mark born in Harlington, and Sarah in Luton. With them are Charlotte 18, Joseph 14, and Charles 11. From this we see Mark must have died between 1851 and 1861. Christina reports that "he died 21st Nov 1853 his age on the death certificate was entered incorrectly as 56yrs. He was buried in Harlington Parish Church Yard on 24th Nov his age entered as 54yrs".
In 1861, Sarah is 63, a straw plaiter, and alone as head of the family at Horns End, Harlington. Thomas 26, and Charles 20 are still unmarried and living with her as agricultural labourers. Solomon Denton and his family were next door. In 1871 it is a William Denton, 48, with his family living next door, while in Sarah's house, Charles now has his own family and his head of the household. Thomas is also still at home. Sarah probably died between 1871 and 1881, and indeed Christina reports that "Sarah died 27th Mar 1875 in Horns End, Harlington aged 79yrs". All the censuses agree that she was born about 1798 in Luton.
As we have seen, Mark Denton was born locally about 1800. This makes his baptism easy to trace and puts him in the following series of children of John and Elizabeth Denton...
1. JOHN DENTON, b. 23 DEC 1783, bap. 17 OCT 1784 Harlington, Bedford
2. SARAH DENTON, b. 3 APR 1786, bap. 2 JUL 1786 Harlington, Bedford
3. ELIZABETH DENTON, bap. 15 MAR 1789, buried 28 Mar 1789 Harlington, Bedford
4. ELIZABETH DENTON, b. 23 MAY 1790, bap. 1 JUN 1790 Harlington, Bedford
Possibly had a daughter out of wedlock: MARY ANN DENTON, b. 27 JUL 1810, bap. 23 SEP 1810 Harlington
5. LETTICE DENTON, bap. 10 NOV 1793 Harlington, Bedford
6. DANIEL DENTON, bap. 25 SEP 1796 Harlington, Bedford
7. MARK DENTON, b. 4 JUL 1799, bap. 29 DEC 1799 Harlington, Bedford
8. WILLIAM DENTON, b. 18 AUG 1803, bap. 23 OCT 1803 Harlington, Bedford
John and Elizabeth Denton appear in the 1841 census, shown as about 80 years old and born in the county. John appears in death register indexes: 1 Jun 1845, Harlington (June Qtr 1845 Woburn 6.77) 85 years. He died of pneumonia; Louisa Denton was present. It is clear from the censuses that William Denton also stayed in the area like Mark.
The wedding of John Denton and Elizabeth Thorowgood can also be found in Harlington, 10 Oct 1783. The register only mentions that they were married by banns. But the banns register mentions that they were both of the parish. It spells her name both as Thorowgood and Thurragood.
John is not easy to trace further. He might have been baptised in Marston Moretaine 3 Jan 1762, a son perhaps to James and Ann Denton there, who seem to have married 27 January at Millbrook. The name is fairly common and as we go this far back the registers are less complete. However, it does seem that William Denton, the brother of Mark, attempted to gain legal settlement in Marston Moretaine. Might he have had family there? Also, a youth named Daniel Denton died in Harlington in 1788, who was not from Harlington, but apparently from Marston Moretaine, the son of Charles and Mary Denton. It appears from other records that his parents had recently been buried, and that he was a tailor's apprentice in Clophill. Might he have been a cousin of John Dent in Harlington?
The family of Elizabeth Thorowgood
Researchers have had more luck with Elizabeth Thorowgood, patching together a fairly convincing bundle of trees which can be found around the internet. There are differences between versions and some speculation, as always when trees are based only on basic information from registers and the like, but it seems worthwhile to at least record. For un-landed people, there are few records available, and so it is a lucky when we are searching in a county like Bedford which has relatively complete parish registers.
It is generally accepted that Elizabeth was from Cardington. This is not particularly close to Harlington and Westoning (and also not particularly far). If I understand correctly, the main reason for this assumption is simply that there is a baptism for an Elizabeth Thorowgood there about the right time, and the name is not all that common?
Concerning the family Elizabeth is said to be part of in Cardington, John Hill was particularly helpful. In correspondence in 2004 he gave me this summary based upon the Bedford Parish records, and the publication of "The Inhabitnants of Cardington in 1782".

The family of Sarah Warler or Waller
Once again starting with what we know, above, Sarah Waller was born in Luton in about 1799. This matches a baptism on 28 February 1799, to James and Mary in the Luton parish of St Mary's. Who were James and Mary? The Waller surname is quite common around Luton. Warler is an occasional variant, but it is perhaps found more than usual in the following records.
First we can eliminate the James baptised 11 MAR 1781 Saint Mary, Luton, the son of James and Ann. James senior was a wealthy draper and James junior went on to marry a widow, Mary Green 26 AUG 1802 Saint Mary, Luton. I know this because the wills of James senior and Mary Green are relatively easy to find "PCC" wills. There was also a James Waller in Harpenden, just to the south in Hertfordshire, but he appears to have been buried 15 February 1806. He seems to have resided at Hyde Mill, because he seems to have had a daughter Elizabeth baptised in 1779. This is not to say that they might not be related.
The most obvious choice is James Warler and Mary Summerfield married 19 JUL 1797 Luton, and I presume that this James (being "of this parish" at his wedding which does not always seem to mean much) is the one baptised 03 MAR 1771 Saint Mary, Luton, son of John and Elizabeth. James appears to have died not long after having his first child. A 20 December 1801 Luton burial names a James who died of "White Swelling" at the age of 31.
The parents of James in turn must be the couple who married 5 Dec 1766: John Waller of Harpenden in Hertfordshire, and Elizabeth Bourne of the parish of St Mary's where the wedding took place. They had the following children in Luton
Nathaniel baptised 25 Oct. 1767
James baptised 3 March 1771
an un-named child who was buried 16 May 1774
That they used the name Nathaniel is suggestive, as will be seen.
John may actually have been a brother of James of Hyde Mill in Harpenden, with parents named Nathaniel and Ann, but if so then he was much older. The baptisms in Luton for this couple name both parents, and show a big gap:
6 July 1737 John Wallor
8 August 1739 William Waller
3 Feb 1751 James Waller
Nathaniel and Ann were buried in Luton, Nathaniel 23 March 1771, and Ann, widow, 15 September 1776. Their wedding has not been found, but it seems possible that Nathaniel himself is the surviving son of Nathaniel Waller and Cicely Bickerton, who married 17 December 1702 in Luton had the following children...
Thomas bap. 24 Feb 1704. Father is Nathaniel, a waggoner of Luton
Ann born 4 May and bap 11 May 1704. Father is Nathaniel, a waggoner of Luton
Sisley bap 4 July 1708. Son of Narthaniel and Sisley.
Elizabeth bap 5 Feb 1709. Son of Narthaniel and Sisley of Luton.
Nathaniel 25 May 1712. Son of Narthaniel and Cicely of Luton. There is a burial for a child of Nathaniel of Luton for 29 June 1712.
Nathaniel 8 Feb 1714. Son of Narthaniel and Cicely of Luton.
It appears that only Elizabeth, who married Richard Smith (14 Feb 1727 in Studham), and the second Nathaniel survived to adulthood, and so Nathaniel was the main heir of his father whose will was granted probate May 1730. At the time he appears to have been younger than 21, and an apprentice. His father had become relatively wealthy, an Innholder, owner of the inn known at different times as the White Lion or White Hart, near Market Place. This was sold for the upkeep of his son Nathaniel junior. Cicely, his wife, had been born Cicely Bickerton, and was from a well-off family, being the daughter of Thomas and Ann Bickerton, as shown by the will of the latter. The family appear to have been baptists.
Nathaniel Waller senior, appears to be the son of yet another Nathaniel who appears in registers to have had the following family...
With wife Ellen...
1. Sarah Waller, daughter of Nathaniel, baptised 28 Feb 1669/70.
2. Nathaniel Waller, son of Nathaniel and Ellen baptised 28 Nov 1671
3. Elizabeth Waller, daughter of Nathaniel Waller, baptised 29 May 1679, with the mother Ellen being buried on the same day.
Marriage with Ann Keys 10 April 1683 in Luton and then very shortly thereafter...
4. Ann Waller baptised 27 April 1683
5. Mary Waller baptised 7 May 1685
Nathaniel the first was buried 2 November 1690 and his second wife Ann on 12 December 1692. According to tax records for 1671 he had a house with one hearth.
In the Luton St Mary registers, there is an entry for a Nathaniel at a suitable date to take us one more generation, so if we may believe our luck the first Nathaniel was baptised 29 September 1647 to Reynold and Sarah. A seeming sister, Sarah, was much later baptised in 1681 at the age, so the register says, of 23. Her parents are clearly named. So this implies that the family did not always baptize in the conforming church.
Reynold also had one hearth in 1671, and seems to have been a labourer. In 1674, this Reynold a labourer of Luton was prosecuted in Caddington for theft. He appears to have been buried 1 June 1681.
