| Some initial observations: |
|
| *There are at
least 4 distinct groups in the main identifiable cluster which was first
found, perhaps surviving from early times when more such
difficult-to-categorize “I” haplotypes were presumably common in whatever
part of Europe their common ancestor lived. Note particularly: YCAII=19-21 or
19-19; DYS459=10-10 or 9-9. All 4 combinations are found. I also added the
unusual Ashley in which is not necessarily connected to the rest. |
| *There are
also some other individuals amongst those with DYS459=9-9 who are added in
tentatively on the basis of the clustering work of John McEwan (see “I?” at
http://www.geocities.com/mcewanjc/37strallhapejqnir1a.pdf ). These can
perhaps be though of as distant relatives to the rest. See the results for
Crowley, Hall, Chamberlain, Graber, Russell, Brewer and Sas. It should be
kept in mind that by including them, a few of the modal values are changed. I
have not included the Ashley at the bottom of the table in the modal
calculations though. |
| *The group as a
whole, as it appears in voluntary public databases so far, is Northern
European (perhaps reflecting a bias in the ancestry of people who typically
contribute to such databases). The 19-19 group looks British, and perhaps
Scottish (particularly the sub-group of Livingston + Ritchie + Adamson +
Lockhart). The 19-21 group, which seems generally more diverse, are perhaps
Nordic in origin? |
| *The fact that
there is no 19-20 (between 19-19 and 19-21) or 9-10 (between 9-9 and 10-10)
found so far is interesting. Examples of 18-21 and 19-22 seem to be one step
away from an ancestral 19-21. |
| *The general
impression of the group as a whole is that it is closer to I1b, than I1c or
I1a. But there have been 2 confirmations now (at least within the sub-cluster
with YCAII=19-19) that this group does not share the P37.2 SNP mutation used
to define I1b. So it seems to be a distant cousin of I1b (which is generally
not common in Britain). |
| *In November
2005 we had news that this groups does not have M223, meaning it is not I1c.
So these groups are I1*, meaning I1 of a type which is not in any of the main
known branches. More SNP tests would be needed to confirm the status of the
individuals most far from the modal of the group (such as those with
DYS459=9-9 and YCAII=19,21 and one step neighbours). |
| *The
YCAII=19,19 groups are all quite similar and are possibly have a much more
recent common ancestor than the rest. They are also more geographically
concentrated to Britain – seemingly more native populations in Scotland and
Wales? |
| *Within the
YCAII=19,21 group there is more diversity, but some grouplets also seem to
exist. One interesting similarity in name is that Grawe looks like a Northern
Germanic word for a Duke. However the DNA is not so similar. Mangum and
Duke/Dukes are similar. |
| *Hopkins and
Lee seem to share an ancestor, possibly English, whose DYS385 markers went
from 12-14 to 14-14 compared to his ancestors. This could be “gene
conversion” mutation with one part of this multi-part marker over-writing the
other. |
| *The Adamson and Wallace DNA
project participants included below have been able to use this webpage to see
their likely Scottish origins – because they share surname and (rare) DNA
signature with Sorenson project participants who have traced line further
than them. |
| *The Stewart might be close to
either the Wallaces or the Sutton. More markers would be needed to tell. |
