In the year 2000, the White Plume family of the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, created an agrarian solution for reservation poverty by growing a crop of industrial hemp. Later that same year, illegally and without warning, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) raided sovereign land to eradicate an estimated 65,000 industrial hemp plants. In April 2001, the White Plume family decided to re-plant their stolen crop. Faced with criminal action and imprisonment, the White Plumes of the Pine Ridge Reservation have been placed in a difficult predicament that will define the sovereignty of the Oglala Lakota people. Owe Aku – Bring Back the Way is a compelling true story of bravery, perseverance, and hope. A reminder that the Oglala Lakota people have survived a wide spread genocide with their traditions intact.
