Welcome to my website

My name is Peter Wouters, I'm passionate hobbyist of the New Zealand Red-crowned Kakariki. This is one of the 10 variaties of the genus Cyanoramphus. The intention of this website is to collect as much information as possible about this bird. The site will be updated when new information is available.

At present there are 10 species and 4 subspecies.

  1.Orangefronted Kakariki (C. malherbi)
  2.Forbes parakeet (C. forbesi)
  3.Macquarie island Red-crowned parakeet (C. e. erythrotis)
     - Subspecie: Reischek’s parakeet (C. e. hochstetteri)
  4.Norfolk island Red-crowned parakeet (C. cooki)
  5.New Caledonia Red-crowned parakeet (C. saisetti)
  6.Yellow crowned Kakariki (C. auriceps)
  7.Antipodes parakeet (C. unicolor)
  8.New Zealand Red-crowned Kakariki (C. n. novaezelandiae)
     - Subspecie: Chatham island Red-crowned parakeet (C. n. chathamensis)
  9.Society parakeet (C. ulietanis)
10.Black-fronted parakeet (C. zelandicus)

2 species of which still no DNA sequence is done and therefore for the time being considered as subspecies of Cyanoramphus n. novaezealandiae:

     - Kermadec Red-crowned parakeet (C. n. cyanurus)
     - Lord Howe parakeet (C. n. subflavescens)


Orangefronted Kakariki

Length: 23 cm; pale green; narrow orange band to the forehead extends to eyes; orange patch on both sides of the lower back; a yellow crown on top of the head.

Natural habitat: South Island, Stewart, the area near to Hope River in Nord Canterburry.

Forbes parakeet

Formerly considered as a sub specie of the Yellowcrown, but recent research has demonstrated it is an independent specie.

Length: 25 cm; green; yellowish green belly; narrow red band not extending to the eyes; outer flight feathers greenish blue.

Formerly found on 3 Islands of the Chatham group today only on Mangere and little Mangere. Extremely endangered specie.
Hybridises with Chatham red-crowned parakeet on Mangere and little Mangere.

Macquarie Red crowned parakeet

Length: 30 cm; pale yellowish green; flight feathers pale blue with a green hue.

Habitat:  Maquarie eiland , completely extinct around1890.

Subspecie: Reischek’s parkiet

Length: 30 cm; generally a yellowish green colour; front, crown and spots on the lower back are orange-red; outer flight feathers are light blue.

Lives on the Antipodes Island.




Norfolk Redcrowned parakeet

Length: 31 cm; generally green bird with yellowish green at the chest; red frontal band and red crown; red spots next to the eyes and on the lower back.

New Caledonian Redcrowned parakeet

Length 26 cm; green bird; side of the head, chest and belly are yellow; small pale red crown.

Habitat: New Caledonia.




Yellowcrowned Kakariki

Length: 23 cm; green bird; chest and belly yellowish green; red band above the nose extended to the eyes; golden yellow crown; red spots on the lower back; outer flight feathers violet blue; upper beak bluish grey with a black tip; greyish feet; iris orange-red.

habitat: northern and southern islands of New Zealand; Aukland island and some off shore islands like Three Kings, Little Barrier, Kapiti en Stewart.




Antipodes parakeet

Length 30cm;green bird; chest, belly and under tail yellowish green; outer flight feathers violet blue; orange iris; grey feet; upper beak bluish grey with black tip.

Habitat:  Antipodes island.




Nieuw Zeeland Redcrowned Kakariki

Length 27 cm; generally greenish bird; chest, belly and under tail feathers yellowish green; red crown and band extented to the eyes; red spots at the lower back; outer flight feathers violet blue; grey feet; iris red; upper beak bluish grey with black tip.
Young birds have less red in the crown, brown red iris and shorter tail..

Habitat: at present small amounts on the northern and southern islands; abundant amounts on the off shore islands like Auckland eiland, Three Kings, Little Barrier, Kapiti en Stewart.

Hybridises with the yellow crown. Estimated 1-10% of the pairings are hybrids.

Subspecie: Chatham Redcrowned parakeet

Length: 28 cm; same as the New Zealand redcrowned Kakariki  but with a bright merald green face; belly slightly more yellow; feet are grey to dark grey.

Habitat: Chatham, Pitt island, South East island, Mangere and Little Mangere.

Hybridises on Mangere and Little Mangere with the Forbes’ parakeet as a result of increasing deforestation.

Society parakeet

Length 25cm; head blackish brown, paler in the neck; rump and flights brown; lower back and tail covers brownred; outer flight feathers and covers grey blue; chest, belly and under tail covers olive; middel tail feathers olive brown, outer tail feathers blue grey; iris was probably orange; feet greyish brown; beak bluish grey with blackish tip.

Habitat: formerly on Raiatea, Society islands; completely extinct after 1773.

Blackfronted parakeet

Length 25cm; green bird with bluish chest, under tail covers, tail and front black;fine scarlet stripe above the nose extended next to the eyes; lower back red; outer flight feathers violet blue; iris was probably orange; greyish brown feet; beak bluish grey with black tip.

Habitat: formerly Tahiti, completely extinct in 1844.

Kermadec Redfronted parakeet

Length 29cm; like New Zealand redcrowned Kakariki, but with lesser yellowish plumage on the chest and belly; outer flight feathers dark blue; larger blue green tail.

Habitat: Kermadec islands, like Macauley, Curtis, Meyer, Napier, Dayrell and Chanter; formerly also Raoul.



Lord Howe parakeet

Length 32cm; like the New Zealand Redcrowned Kakariki, but with more yellowish plumage, mainly on the cheeks; smaller red crown.

Habitat:vroeger Lord Howe island; completely extinct in 1870.
