This strange plant is a Welwitschia mirabilis. A tree in fact, with only two leaves which grow during the whole life of the plant, which can last more than 2000 years!
... and that's another famous African tree, the Baobab (Adansonia digitata):

In this largely empty country, no problem to spend my days naked,
with the elephants in Etosha,
near a termite mound in the savanna
or ... taking some rest on the Hoba meteorite!
even if it can get very thirsty there...
this is a very pleasant country!
