The story begins in Bellshill, near Glasgow, September 24, 1962, where a young Glaswegian boy was born. If only people had known what was about to happen to Scottish football in the years to come.....
Ally grew up in love with the game. His professional career starts in 1978, when at the age of 16, he joines the St Johnstone football team. That year he appears on the pitch 4 times, but doesn't score.
The next season he comes on more, but still doesn't get the chance to taste the glory of scoring his first professional goal. But then, during the season of 80/81, a true star is born for the public, as he scores 22 times for his club that season. He even scores a hat-trick against Rangers! In 81 he is signed with Sunderland but despite starting quite some matches, Ally doesn't seem to find his motivation with the English club. 2 years later John Greig signs him with Rangers at the second time of asking. And that's where the successtory begins...
Despite scoring a hat-trick in the 1984 League Cup final against Celtic, the first few years at Ibrox are tough for him, as Rangers suffer a bad period. However, with the arrival of Greame Souness the club bounces back and McCoist develops to a crowd heart-trob. His previous teams begin to see Rangers have got away with one of the steals of the century. During that time he makes his international debut vs. Netherlands on 29/04/86 and proves to be a worthy representative of the dark blue shirt. he soon becomes Scotland's hero.
So many high points have involved Ally since, but a few will always be remembered. For instance, the semi-final of the 91-92 Scottish Cup against Celtic. Rangers were down to 10 men and looked to be on their way out. But shortly before half-time, Ally received a through ball from Stuart McCall which he coolly slotted home behind Gordon Marshall. Rangers won a match that had looked beyond them..
Ally gained the crowd's title of Greatest Living Ranger. He reached his top season in 1992-1993, but that year in April he broke a leg during a World Cup qualifier in Lisbon. Scotland lost 5-0.
