Mallon's book on the 1908 Olympic Games
The data on these pages are completely according to the excellent book by
Bill Mallon and Ian Buchanan:
"The 1908 Olympic Games - Results for All Competitors in All Events, with
Commentary", Jefferson NC, 2000
Included Sports and Events
There are no problems with the determination of which events in London are
Olympic and which are not.
Known errors in Mallon
The following errors have been accepted by Mallon:
Otto Götze (GER/CYC) is not listed. That brings the number of German
Cyclists to 9, of Germans to 82.
William Morton (CAN/CYC) is listed in the 5000m as competing for Great Britain.
That brings the number of British Cyclists down to 36, of British down to
These errors cancel each other out for the number of cyclists (97) and total
number of competitors.
Very Probable errors in Mallon
Mallon is not convinced of the following:
In Fencing, both in the individual épée and sabre, there are
two competitors listed in the Official Report as Sourek.
Mallon has, for both, added the first name Jaroslav "Tucek". He says he thinks
the competitor received a second chance, but that would be the only instance
of that happening, and then for the same man in two competitions ! I have
chosen to make two competitors of it, and I thus get an extra competitor.
Gymnastics : In the Heptathlon (individual championship),
Mallon lists 95 competitors (not all with known places), but he tells that
in all probability, 97 people competed, since a Dutchman is known to have
ended 96th and a Hungarian did not finish the competition. I have decided
to include 2 unknown competitors into the tally.
Motorboating : In the A-class, the name of the skipper
of the winner is known, but there is mention of a crew (probably of 4). I
have included 3 unknown frenchmen in my tallies.
The error of Sourek, and 5 unknown competitors, add up to a final total of
2029 competitors for the 1908 Olympics.
