He began wrestling in 1911 and was World Champion in middleweight A in 1922, European Champion in middleweight B in 1925 and in heavyweight in 1930-1. He took part in the Olympic Games in 1920, '24, '28 (unsuccesfully) and '32. His speciality was the backhammer and he invented the 'Westergren roll'.
