She was the first woman to break 11 seconds for the 100 metres, and did a clean sweep of titles at 100 and 200 metres at the European Championships at Helsinki in 1971 and the Olympics at München. In 1973 she not only lowered the 100 metres World record to 10.8, but also the 200 metres to 22.1.
