His wins at 5000 and 10000 m were expected, but at 1500 m, he proved a surprise winner. His time in the first pair would not have been good enough for sixth place in 1948, but the other racers were not able to match it
He was also world-overall champion on three occasions, from 1950 to 1952.
He was allowed to present a gold medal to Johan-Olaf Koss, winner of the same three distances at the next Olympics to be held in their home country Norway.
