How many countries are there ?

Depending on the definition of the word "country", we can arrive at 191, 196, 212244, 247, 268, 274, 277282, 315, 347, 383. This number may even grow to 387 during 2006. With very liberal counting we can even arrive at 393 or 493 countries.

196 Independent Countries (Non-members of the UN)

ISO3166 defines an Entity as a "country, dependency, or other area of special geopolitical interest". It currently lists 240 entries. (other countries)

Four of those non-members can be considered "independent" countries, so that we arrive at 195

One country maintains a Permanent Observer Mission at UN Headquarters :
192 VA Holy See (Vatican City State)

One entity has received a standing invitation to participate as observer in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly and maintaining permanent offices at Headquarters:
193 PS Palestinian Territories, Occupied

One entity is widely regarded as independent, although it refuses to claim such independence:
194 TW Taiwan, province of China

One entity has a specific status, with claims by other countries being suspended:
195 AQ Antarctica

One country has voted for independence and will most likely be recognized as such (and the remainder will change name)
196 -- Montenegro
(*) -- Serbia

(*) If Montenegro is counted, then either Serbia, or Serbia and Montenegro cannot.

Of these 196 countries, 194 are inhabited, two (the Vatican and Antarctica) have no permanent civilian population.

212 Self and Non-Self-Governing Territories

The UN keeps a list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. In 2002, this list contained the following 16 territories:
197 NC New Caledonia FR
198 TK Tokelau NZ
199 AI Anguilla GB
200 BM Bermuda GB
201 VG British Virgin Islands GB
202 KY Cayman Islands GB
203 FK Falkland Islands GB
204 GI Gibraltar GB
205 MS Montserrat GB
206 PN Pitcairn GB
207 SH Saint Helena GB
208 TC Turks and Caicos Islands GB
209 AS American Samoa US
210 GU Guam US
211 VI Virgin Islands (US) US

The list also contained one territory that had been annexed without full international recognition of that fact:
212 EH Western Sahara

All these countries except three (209) are inhabited, the Western Sahara has a habitation but no "population".

244 Entities listed by the International Standards Organisation (ISO)

ISO3166 defines an Entity as a "country, dependency, or other area of special geopolitical interest".

It contains the following territories which are dependent from another state (inhabited territories only)
213 CX Christmas Island AU
214 CC Cocos Islands AU
215 NF Norfolk Island AU
216 FO Faroe Islands DK
217 GL Greenland DK
218 PF French Polynesia FR
219 YT Mayotte FR
220 PM Saint Pierre and Miquelon FR
221 WF Wallis and Futuna FR
222 AW Aruba NL
223 AN Netherlands Antilles NL
224 CK Cook Islands NZ
225 NU Niue NZ
226 GG Guernsey GB
227 IM Isle of Man GB
228 JE Jersey GB
229 MP Northern Mariana Islands US
230 PR Puerto Rico US

This makes 227 inhabited countries and 3 uninhabited ones

The following dependencies are basically uninhabited:
231 HM Heard Island and McDonald Islands AU
232 TF French Southern Territories FR
233 BV Bouvet Island NO
234 SJ Svalbard and Jan Mayen NO
235 IO British Indian Ocean Territory GB
236 GS South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands GB
237 UM United States Minor Outlying Islands US

For a total of 227 inhabited countries and 10 uninhabited ones.

The list includes three territories that have a special status:
238 HK Hong Kong CN
239 MO Macao CN
240 AX Åland FI

and four départements of France, which have completely the same status as the départements on the mainland:
241 GF French Guiana FR
242 GP Guadeloupe FR
243 MQ Martinique FR
244 RE Reunion FR

ISO3166 has 243 entries. (Montenegro has not yet received a code)

234 of these are inhabited, 10 are uninhabited.

247 Sporting countries

In many sporting organisations, the nations of the United Kingdom have separate membership. These are certainly "countries".
-(*) England
245 Scotland
246 Wales
247 Northern Ireland

Of these 247, 10 are uninhabited.

Any full list of sporting countries should therefor include 237 entries

(*) If England is counted, then Great Britain (or the United Kingdom) cannot.

268 or 274 Territories recognised by the United Nations

In addition to the ISO list and the crown dependencies listed above, the United Nations recognises the existence of the following territories:

2 Territories comprised in AU by ISO:
248 AU Ashmore and Cartier Islands AU
249 AU Coral Sea Islands Territory AU

PF: Clipperton Island is included in French Polynesia by ISO
250 PF Clipperton Island FR

TF: these islands constitute the Miscellaneous French Indian Ocean Islands and are included in Reunion by ISO.
They were transferred from Réunion to the French Southern Territory by a decree of 3 Jan 2005.
The first four lie in the Mozambique Channel, Tromelin in the Indian Ocean proper.
251 TF Bassas da India FR
252 TF Europa Island FR
253 TF Glorioso Islands FR
254 TF Juan de Nova Island FR
255 TF Tromelin Island FR

PT: external territories of Portugal
256 PT Azores external parts of Portugal
257 PT Madeira

UM: the islands that are grouped into the ISO code for the US Minor Outlying Islands (UM) are counted separately in the UNO list:
Most of these islands lie in the Pacific Ocean, Navassa is an island in the Carribean:
-(*) UM Baker Island US
258 UM Howland Island US
259 UM Jarvis Island US
260 UM Johnston Atoll US
261 UM Kingman Reef US
262 UM Midway Island US
263 UM Navassa Island US
264 UM Palmyra Atoll US
265 UM Wake Island US

PS: parts of Palestine
(*) PS Gaza separate parts of Palestine
266 PS West Bank

Other territories
267 Guantanamo Bay integral part of Cuba, leased to the US Army
268 Senkaku Island Japanese territory
269 Kurile Islands Russian territory (claimed by Japan)
270 Bird Island external territory of Venezuela

Other territories listed as "sovereignty unsettled"
271 Paracel Islands in the South China Seas, claimed by Vietnam, China, and others
272 Liancourt Rock claimed by Japan and the Republic of Korea
273 Scarborough Reef in the South China Seas, claimed by China and the Philippines
274 Spratly Islands in the South China Seas, claimed by Vietnam, China, and others

The UN list does not yet include Åland or Montenegoro, doesn't include Taiwan, nor Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - and therefore arrives at only 268 entries

Of these 27 additions, only Madeira, the Azores and the West Bank / Gaza can be said to be inhabited, which means there are 240 inhabited and 34 uninhabited ones.

277

The US Government has a list called FIPS 10-4, which includes three more entities:
275 Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area British Military Bases in Cyprus
276 Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area
277 Jan Mayen Jan Mayen and Svalbard lie so far apart that it is strange to see them included in just one ISO code.

These are all uninhabited (in the sense that they have no permanent civilian population), so there are still 240 inhabited and now 37 uninhabited countries in this list.

282 Countries and External Territories

The following are external territories that are usually included in the main entity, but that have received an "exceptionally reserved" ISO-3166 code:
278 EA Ceuta, Melilla parts of Spain
279 IC Canary Islands part of Spain
280 DG Diego Garcia part of the British Indian Ocean Territory
281 AC Ascension Island part of Saint Helena
282 TA Tristan da Cunha part of Saint Helena

Diego Garcia should be said to be uninhabited (US military base), so there are 244 inhabited and 38 uninhabited countries.

315 countries

There exists a club called TCC, the Travelers' Century Club, of which you can become a member once you have visited 100 countries. They keep an official list, which includes 315 countries. Countries are included when they are "removed from parent, either geographically, politically or ethnologically". Their list includes the following entities, not yet listed above:

347 countries?

One group of people are very interested in the concept of "countries": radio-amateurs. They use a list of (january 2005) 335 entities. They focus mainly on separation by distance rather than political difference. If part of a nation is separated by more than 100 km from the rest of the nation, it qualifies for separate entry. The entities can be found on the DXCC list, as maintained by AARL.

The current list adds the following territories to our tally:
