Australia can be considered the first world champions
from 1876 to 1879, 1882 to 1883, 1899 to 1903, 1907 to 1912, 1920 to 1927,
1930 to 1964, in 1970, from 1970 to 1978, and from 1997 to the present

England can be considered world champions from
1880 to 1882, 1884 to 1899, 1903 to 1905, 1912 to 1914, 1928 to 1929, 1930
to 1931, in 1958, from 1964 to 1966, in 1969, in 1970-71, from 1978 to 1980,
and in 1981-82

West Indies can be considered world champions from
1966 to 1968, in 1980-81, and from 1982 to 1997
-
South Africa can be considered world champions
in 1969-70, just prior to them being excluded from the international scene

Pakistan had their highest ranking (second) from
1983 to 1986 and 1987 to 1991

New Zealand were ranked second in 1986 and 1987
-
India were ranked third in 1972-73
-
Sri Lanka have moved up to fifth by 1999, up to
fourth in 2001, and third in 2001-02

Zimbabwe have not yet moved up from ninth
-
Bangladesh are ranked tenth to start with
