The "Test" Matches by the "Rest of the World"

The Super Series (Australia vs Rest of the World) has been granted official status by the ICC. There have been 3 official ODI's and one official Test Match.

Statisticians around the world heve spoken out against this decision, but I don't see why they should complain. Of course it makes their job slightly more difficult, but that should not be of major concern. As a fact we can say that these matches are more competitive than many others that do have the official stamp, and they should therefor be considered just as important.

Which brings us to the main topic of this page: some previous matches that should have the same status.

Before 1970, the international sides were called "Commonwealth XI"

From 1970, such a team was dubbed "Rest of the World"

In 1981/82, an "International XI" played 3 5-day matches in and against Pakistan

And in 1987, the 200th anniversary of the MCC was celebrated by a match between MCC and the Rest of the World. This brought together 22 of the best players in the world (I watched this match on TV, and suffered a motor accident on the monday night. I wanted to watch the final day's play - exciting finish in prospect - from hospital, but sadly the fifth day was rained out)

All these matches deserve test match status.
