Herman's ODI Ratings

ODI Team Ratings - a mathematical approach

Having published my test ratings since 1996, many people started asking for ODI ratings, and I started those in february 1997.

These ODI ratings are calculated just like the Test ratings, with one big difference : the number of runs is divided by the number of overs, not wickets. If a side is bowled out, the full complement of alloted overs is deemed to have been used. If a side reaches its target within the alloted overs, or if for any other reason 50 overs have not been bowled, a correction using the Duckworth-Lewis method is made.

You will find here a more detailed explanation on how these ratings are calculated

The ratings should be read as : number of runs scored, resp. conceded, against average opposition, over 50 overs. The rating is the difference between the two, and indicates by how many runs a team would win or lose an ODI against average opposition. The column 'matches' indicates the number of matches that are counted for the sides (in fact the number of overs batted + bowled, divided by 100). Remember that last year's matches count for half, the year before for a quarter and so on.

In the past I included matches between full members and top associates, but I have now changed this and only official ODIs are included in these ratings.

However, Namibia, USA, UAE and Hong Kong have now less than half an ODI in the ratings, so they are no longer shown. Afghanistan have played their first ODI in 2009.
