1. Flutes in D (the standard key)

1.1 Standard model in D:
The Standard model D-flute is a flute somewhere in between a Pratten model and a Rudall&Rose. The sound is sweet with a powerful bottom D, and easy second octave. This is the default model I supply if nothing else is specified.

The Standard flute is available with up to 6 keys (D#, Fshort, F long, G#, Bb, C). It comes with block-mounted keys unless pin-mounted keys have been asked for.

1.2.Rudall & Rose model in D
The Rudall & Rose model is based on the measurements of about 5 different Rudall & Rose and Rudall & Carte flutes I’ve measured. The instrument has a very sweet, yet powerful tone, and is brilliant in its second octave, but requires a bit more technique to make it sound well than a Standard model flute. As the size of the finger holes of different Rudall &"38 Roses varies greatly, I also offer besides the normal size a model with small finger holes. This can be especially interesting for people with small hands.

The Rudall & Rose model is available with up to 6 keys. It comes with block-mounted keys unless specified otherwise.

I also offer the Rudall & Rose flutes in a ‘Superior model’. These flutes are made from a limited amount of old Cocus wood (at least 50 years old, probably older) I was able to obtain from a descendant of the French Lot family. Besides being made of this Cocus wood which makes the instrument look very much as the original Rudall & Rose flutes, the “Superior model” has the head joint lined with full sterling silver. The tone holes are undercut and the head joint is delivered with a screw cap to adjust cork position. These flutes come only as 6 key or 8 key instruments.

1.3. Pratten model in D
My Pratten model has the typical large bore and large holes and produces the most powerful sound of the different models.
The instrument is available without keys, and with up to 8 keys. The keys are pin-mounted, the C-foot joint is a Boehm system foot joint.
As for the Rudall & Rose I also make “Superior model” Pratten flutes, featuring the same characteristics: 50 year old Cocus wood, Sterling silver lined head joint, screw cap cork adjuster, undercut tone holes. The superior model is available in 6 key and 8 key versions. For the 8 key model please specify whether you prefer the Boehm type or the Siccama type C-foot joint.

2. Flutes in other pitches

2.1 Flute in low Bb:
This flute is based on a Rudall & Rose instrument, with relatively small holes for the size of the instrument. This helps to get them covered, as one needs to stretch the hands to play a Bb instrument. The flute is made in African Blackwood, tuning slide is standard. The original R & R instrument was made of Cocobolo, flutes in this wood can be made as well.

2.2.Flute in C My C-flute design has a 20mm bore, so it is not just an extension of a D-flute. The finger holes are rather large. The sound is dark and powerful, and already surprisingly different from a D-flute. A C-flute might be an option if one is going to play a lot with instruments in C or F; a C-flute avoids struggling with keys on your D-flute, and just sounds great in those keys. The flute can be provided with up to 6 keys.

2.3. Flute in Eb
My Eb flute basically has a Pratten-type design, making it sound really powerful. If you wish to impress with a brilliant tone and incredibly fast response: use the trick found on a lot of CDs, i.e. take an Eb flute instead of a D. Eb flutes are made just as D-flutes, and are available with all keys etc of the D-flute

2.4. Third flutes in F and G
Based on a Rudall & Rose third flute that plays in what would nowadays be an F#, I start to make third flutes in F and G. Please contact me for details.

2.5 Small flutes, piccolos and fifes
I make little flutes in A, Bb, C, D, Eb up to high G (a pen-size instrument). These instruments normally come without tuning slide. D-piccolos/fifes can be made to resemble local historical instruments if wanted.
