Volunteers marvellously preserve some of the old fortresses around Liége. These dedicated people, man and women spend every free hour to restore and maintain the old monuments as good as possible and this with a lot of patriotism, energy, motivation and a very low budget. They try to preserve the premises for the next generations to come. And this to keep the memory alive of the soldiers who died trying to defend the homeland against a cruel aggressor.All these fortresses are open to the public. At regular intervals guided tours are organised. But after opening hours they are closed and locked, this to prevent not only vandalism and burglary but also as a safety measure. The small fee paid for the visit helps to preserve them.
The last few months however these monuments are the victim of an increasing amount of trespassing, vandalism and genuine burglary. Again the old fortresses are under attack, this time not by another nations army but by one or several groups of individuals.
Ironically we must assess that one of these groups of individuals has the same nationality as the army that attacked them on two previous occasions.
And this group even has a website! A website where they proudly boast about their 'expeditions'.
It must be said, not only the Liége fortresses are besieged by these people. Their are also excursions made to the fortifications in Switserland, France and to those in their own homeland, Germany.They don't do this out of interest for history or military architecture, no, they just do it for the kick and fun.

Nach einigen Serpentinen erreichen wir dann das Fort Trancremont und parken. Die Anlage liegt ca. auf Bodenniveau und hat nicht den üblichen Eingang, sondern lediglich einen schmalen Hohlgang, der sich in Richtung Fort in den Boden gräbt. Eine Einfahrt ist nicht zu erspähen. Dafür ist das Fort zu besichtigen steht auf einem großen Schild über dem Eingang - nur eben nicht heute.

Wir umrunden das Fort im Uhrzeigersinn und müßen uns dabei mit teilweise dichtem Buschwerk herumplagen. Die einzige Erkenntnis die wir dadurch bekommen, ist, daß das Fort 4 Schenkel statt wie den 3 laut Karte vermuteten hat. Kein weiterer Eingang an die riesige Anlage. Wir sparen uns die 4 Meter in den Graben zu klettern um das grasüberwucherte Innenteil zu besichtigen und inspizieren lieber etwas den Wald hinter dem Eingang nach den Spuren alter Straßen und einem evtuellem Eingang.
