I have to apologise, the 'order of battle' I presented in an earlier edition of this page was NOT correct. I reviewed the page completely. Suggestions and remarks are always welcome. It is not my intention to give a full description of the 'Schlieffen plan', this can be found at other sites. The map and tables below are only intended to give a short overview of the situation on the German side begin august 1914.
As you can see on the map Liége with its roads, railroads and bridges was essential for the movement of the 1° and 2° Army. Therefore immediately, on mobilisation, a special army was formed, the 'Maas Armee' wich task it was to capture the fortified city.
A typical German Army Corps was organised as follows :
- Infantry division
- Infantry division
- Corps Munition columns
- Transport Train units
- Heavy field Howitser unit
- Flying Corps detachment
- Engineers and Bridging Train
- Telephone Section
- Searchlight Section
The infantry division in 1914 was organised as :
- Infantry Brigade (2 Regiments)
- Infantry Brigade (2 Regiments)
- Pioneers (1 or 2 companies and bridging train)
- Field Artillery Brigade (2 Regiments)
- Medical Corps (1 or 2 bearer companies)
- Cavalry (3 or 4 squadrons)
The German infantry regiment in 1914 was organised in three battalions, with each four companies, numbered consecutively from 1 to 12. The separate machine-gun company, not attached to a battalion numbered 13.Available for download : Map with the emplacements, in the border region, of the French and German units before the war.
