Hello everybody
Sunpower has been playing in a steady line-up for more than 10 years.
It is with great regret that we inform you that Gerd, our bass player,
decided to explore other musical adventures (something involving analogue synths).
In these 10 years Gerd was: An awesome bass player, A guy with golden ears in the studio and also the writer of some of the songs we've been playing until today.

We think it would make him happy if you showed up on his 2 final shows:

6th of December at Escapade Dendermonde and 27th of December at OJC Kompas St-Niklaas.
Let him experience one more time the energy only people in the Belgian Hardcore/Punk/Whatever scene can give him! We are grateful that he was a part of this band for
so many years and wish him all the best in his future activities.

Lost member, Friend forever!

Howdi
10 years of Sunpower was quite a party at Nijdrop. Those who were there won't easily forget it…

Before we enter our midlife crisis we added Thomas Crackup to the band. He will provide the old Sunpower songs with a refreshing touch and help us out with creating new songs in a different style. I can hear you think : “What shall we have now?”
But, as the old philosopher used to say “One cannot eat the same potato every day”. Thomas will have his fist Sunpower gig on March 9 in Holland.
His fist gig in Belgium will be on March 16 at Oilsjt Omploft and... he deserves your support!

We kick off the new Sunpower year on friday 1st March with a genuine “Wild at heart”party where you can see Blackup and the Sunpower deejays 'live'.
Expect the best garage, indie, motown, glamrock, Ska, Manchester, northern soul, jazz, rocksteady… until the small hours...

Be there or beware!

May Newsletter 2011
Ahoy,

It's been quite a while... but here's a genuine Sunpower Newsletter!

Those who've missed the Adrenalin Addiction Fest in Amsterdam really missed a big deal: lots of people, good atmosphere, social talk with Violent Arrest (ex-Ripcord and our youth heroes), cold beers and all bands in a super condition. Our set was recorded and you can watch it here.

Our France/Italy tour was the most varied so far.
Davy bundled his somewhat weird thoughts here.

As for the collectors: Perspective Records released the "This is Belgium" compilation cd.
We sound very fresh amongst the rest of the loud fury...

We are rehearsing for an new 7" and we hope to release a compilation of all EP's we've ever had.

As for the usual side projects: ask the usual suspects about them.

And as for our very near future plans:

- LocoLocofest on Saturday 25th June with Crackups, Psycho(US), Gewapend Beton, The Usual Suspects and Belgian Asociality for only € 8,00. Starts at 4 pm... and look who wil be there too: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=173288359360294#!/event.php?eid=164992823521704 .

- Zero Boys (exclusive Belgian concert) on Fridag 8th July.
Kevin will be on holiday but he will be replaced by Super (The Scurmies):
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=154033391321471 or http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=174043512649869

- Next Halloween there will be a second Misfits show.
Gerd organizes it and he's looking for more creepy acts (style Cramps, Necromantix) to complete the bill. Interested?
Send an e-mail to vanhoofgerd@hotmail.com.

Bye for now and see y'around at one of these fine Sunpower gigs:
Sat. 28 May: Birthday Mash (invited only) @ De Werker (Opwijk)
w/ Lunatic Society, Crackups
Fri. 8 July: JH Nijdrop (Opwijk)
w/ Zero Boys(US), Brat Pack, Vogue, Dear Hearts

October Newsletter 2010
Yow punk,

Upon special request: a Sunpower newsletter!

The "Bondage Release Party" in a well filled Nijdrop was as it should be: cool bands, short sets, collectors scum and our own 'Vedette' beer.

As for the summer, Pukkelpop was the absolute top (still enjoying the afterthoughts). The UK tour was drowned in alcohol and so in Leeds we played the shortest Sunpower set ever (because of destructive behaviour on stage), we chilled in Liverpool on the Magical Mystery bus (info: Koki) and we closed down in the legendary Cavern (memories of our youth!). That set was completed in Harrogate with an awesome afterparty. Sheffield brought us what a Sunday should bring: cold turkey and straight forward! In a word: too short and very bad for one's liver!

We had some nice gigs in Holland (henhouse style), Arlon, Köln and at the Skate happening.

As we all know 'Variety is the spice of life':
- various side projects are growing;
- there's a VitaminX show coming up in Dendermonde;
- the France/Italy tour is scheduled for 2011

mosh it!

TOTAL CONTROL reviews

Fast, stripped down hardcore from Belgium. This four-piece barrel through eight politically charged tunes that touch on such topics like war, class struggle and capitalism. And of course no record is complete without the ever so popular Orwellian-themed song titled "Total Control". This is not completely original, but it's still very musically competent - [Maximum Rock'N Roll nr 252]

That is not the best name, I know... sounds like hippy cult stuff but these belgian kids play some really tight fast hardcore. Definitely rooted in early 80's US hardcore/punk, these 8 songs are done very well utilizing their sheer punk momentum to create quick and short memorable hardcore songs. I'm pretty impressed with these chaps, this is a good start for sure!! [Short, Fast + Loud zine]

Sunpower recorded this 'Total Control' 7" somewhere in October 2003. It's released by 'Still Holding On'-records. The cover art- work is done by Spoiler and fits this whole release perfectly. 'Total Control' is in every aspect better than 'Back To Basics', their previous release. The songs are more balanced, structured and have a nice fast pace. The artwork and lay-out are cooler too. Now, this release contains 8 tracks of fast and furious 80's hardcore, that will probably remind you of bands like 'Minor Threat', 'Bad Brains'... without being a rip-off. I often got to hear Sunpower's just a copy of MT but they are so much more if you just want to listen to it, without any prejudices. All these songs just keep wandering around in your head after you heard them. Mike, the singer of the band does a great job: he can sing really, really fast and he can also sing more melodic and he can scream his lungs out if you want to. He also writes the guitar riffs and the lyrics, which deal about politics and personal opions, feelings and emotions. I would recommand this 7" to you if you like 80's hardcore and bands like MT, 'Black Flag', 'Dead Kennedy's'... [Keep It Alive Webzine]

SAY SOMETHING reviews
After three 7”s the Belgian answer to Dead Kennedys and Circle Jerks delivers their first full length record. Sixteen raging punk/hardcore songs that sound like they could have been written in the early 80’s. The lyrics are great, a lot of songs with a political message against the “great” world leaders we have these days. Some good self reflecting lyrics to the current state of the punk/hardcore scene en the kids that are into it. Combined with the solid artwork and okay production this seriously is a band we should keep an eye on. This record rips. If you pick up the LP version of this record you also get a copy of Something To Say fanzine with contains some more background info on the guys in Sunpower and interviews with Dead Stop and some other crucial Belgian kids. Rating **** [asice webzine 2006]

Hold everything, stop the press!!! I have just found my absolute favourite album of this year! And frankly, nothing cán happen to change my opinion of that! The wonderful thing of it all, is that it concerns a Bélgian band. Now don't you go thinking that has to do with a possible nationalistic or chauvenistic trait of mine, but I can't help glowing with a certain feeling of pride for what this Bélgian band brings us here!
So, what's on offer? The purest Reagan-era Hardcore you can imagine! Remember early '80s bands like 7 Seconds, Minor Threat, Reagan Youth, Youth Brigade, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Adolescents, Descendants, and more of that ilk? Short and simple, but quite effective tunes on a PunkRock/ Hardcore basis, with a singer that máy spew out his lyrics, but always quite comprehensibly. It was an age where the message was equally important as the fact of being “against everything” (admittingly, youngsters had to deal with quíte a bit during the Reagan years).
Singer Mike Meat and bassist Gerd had played together during the '90s in Hardcore outfit Les Schtroumphs Alcooliques (from the Brussels suburbs, their sound was remeniscent of older bands like Attitude Adjustment or Excel, with a whiff of Electro Hippies, and who -to my knowledge- only released an untitled mini-CD), and when that band split up in the new millenium, Mike came to the disappointing discovery that still nothing had changed in the world. There were still so many things he (and other people with a healty affinity for fairness) couldn't agree with, and so he decided that the end of his former band would nót mean a halt for hím! Playing guitar and singing, he found an immediate accomplice in Gerd, and together with drummer Jerre, thge band started writing new songs and rehearsing feaverishly. They did their very first gig on November 30 th, 2002, and haven't looked back since. In April 2003, a selected part of the public at large (only 300 copies made for private distribution) were enabled to enjoy the band's music through their very first release, the 7-track 7” vinyl EP “Back To Basics”. Lasting only just under 8 minutes, this black slab already contained all the elements for which the band would gain its hardent fanbase, even if in somewhat pour production.
At that same time, Mike felt he wanted to concentrate on his singing, and leave the guitar play to somebody else. Enter Kevin (ex-Dead Man's Handle) who was to truely solidify the Oldschool Hardcore sound. Jerre left only a month later, and got replaced by ex-Sad Origin, ex-Die My Demon, ex-The Setup skinsman David. This line-up then recorded the 8-track 7” vinyl EP “Total Control” (released through the Still Holding On label on a 400 copy rotation, with an extra 100 on coloured vinyl) for a December 2003 release, and continued playing gigs with the likes of Reproach, Dead Stop, Victims Of Society, Capital Scum, Vortex, The Kids, Die My Demon...but also sharing the stages with some of the band's heroes, like MDC, Spermbirds, DRI, Poison Idea, Colera, Oi Polloi, Raw Power, Direct Control, and many more!
The next release, “The John Terror EP” (again an 8-track 7”EP; 650 copies released on the Deviant) would wait 'till January 2005, but meanwhile the band's reputation (and their fanbase) had steadily grown stronger. That same year, the band had 2 new songs out on an Indonesian compilation CD (released through Time Up), also featuring Train In Vain, Jackstone, and Powercore (Indonesia, respectively with 5, 4, & 3 tracks), I Object (US, 4 trx), Kobra XL (Chech Republic, 5 trx), and Dick Cheney (Sweden, 4 trx) in June.
Somewhere along the line, the guys switched drummers again (the current one calls himself Keith Mon), andgot in contact with the people at RocknRollRadio, which resulted in a deal for the band's first “full-length” release! And I use the term “full-length” with a certain portion of humour (a concept the band is not alien to in some of their lyrics), because the 16 tracks on the CD only last a good 19 1⁄2 minutes! Lyrically, Mike delves out of a socio-political and scene-releated barrel (plus an occasional 'personal' one), using a humoristic twist to bring his statements (and stuff most "concerned citizens" are in touch with). Vocalwise, he's deliciously backed up by Gerd, and 3 other guys (one being one of the two recording engineers of the album). Mike himself shouts his lyrics with an occasionally more melodic moment, adding a certain degree of vibrato to his voice. And when that happens, he becomes ever so remeniscent of some of the greater singers in the early '80s Hardcore scene. Listen to album opener “Too Radical”, and you might be reminded of JelloBiaffra (Dead Kennedys)...listen to “My Revenge”, “I'm A Creep”, or “Unsatisfied”, and you'll find him remeniscent of Mr. Chi Pig from Canadian band SNFU. And being friends with one of the people at R3 has had the advantage (besides getting the CD 10 days ahead of anybody else) to get an addidional viewpoint, because Ludo felt this Belgian band reminded him a lot of Circle Jerks (a viewpoint which I was unable to check, since my only knowledge of that band comes from having seen them play in the 2 nd half of the '80s). In fact, the artwork for the back of the CD was styled in the fashion of one of Circle Jerks' (the left picture, near that refrigerator, with the guys in the same position). For a feminist point of view in the song “This Is Grrrlsfun”, the male singers were exchanged for the all-female set-up of Kika D (lead vocals, also presenting her book “Polar Fury” at the release gig of the album on Sunday, May 14 th), Jessica, and Natcha (with Kika also helping out during the backing vocals).
Having had the opportunity to listen to the album quite elaborately (because our editor-in-chief was pre-occupied with other stuff), and having heard it at léast 20 times by now, I am amazed about the fact that I still haven't gotten bored with it yet. That may have someting to do with the delicious style, of course, and the fact that it brings back so many dámn nice (musical) memories. Still, I cannot help myself from giving the album a completely perfect rating, and for once I have found myself an absolutely top best album of the year! Believe you me, nóthing's gonna change thát! In fact, my positive feelings about this release will only increase, because it's also to appear in 12" vinyl format (through Still Holding On & Deviant in Belgium, and through Peter Brower in the UK (the last on coloured vinyl). Of course, I have already ordered my copy, because I am a complete vinyl buff! As an added extra, the vinyl comes fith an additional fanzine...something the band apparently already did for their 7" releases. Yet another thing to look out for! 100/100 [concreteweb.be 2006]

PAIN FOR PROFIT reviews
This comes in a fetching gatefold sleeve with an illustration of an annimal being skinned ready for the furtrade(hence the album title), and inside we have numerous gig photos which make me long for them to come over here again cos i missed'em last time! Anyway, if you don't know these yet, they hail from Belgium and play music that owes it's soul to the early U.S. Hardcore scene. You can hear clear influences from such greats as Dead Kennedys(including a jazz intro), Jerry's Kids and MDC. Lyrics deal with riots in Belgium, self harming, the passion for the scene and wanting to be shane MacGowan for a day! For a more modern today comparison, they do remind me of Amdi Petersons Arme and a little Brezhnev. There doesn't seem as many stand out songs as on their 'Say something'LP but there are still great memorable ones such as 'Gore's world' and 'I hate autority'. One thing I would say is for the music they play that one ingredient that's missing for me is they don't have the feeling of anger of the bands that they're trying to emulate, cos obviously was then and this is now. there's nowt they can do about that tought so as an album in it's own right, I'd say it's a damn good melodic hardcore album.
(Andy) Bald Cactus-fanzine(juni-2008)

Belgium’s pride and joy Sunpower has been taking the scene by storm since 2002. It took a while before this Dutch cheesehead got to know the band, but ever since the mighty Say Something LP came out I’ve been down with these dudes like Corky from Life Goes On. Why? Mainly ‘cause Sunpower bring that kind of punkrock that is tailor-made for those who enjoyed the genre in the 70s and 80s, and have grown weary of what hardcorepunk has become since. I guess I’m one of those nostalgic stupid fuckin' bastards and that’s why I genuinely fell in love with this band and with the whole revival thing that's been going on for a while in hardcoreville on the European mainland. For the record: Fuck metalcore, fuck false metal bullshit, fuck homophobic gymnasts, fuck all them retarded meatheads, fuck fashion, fuck apathetic losers and fuck all that blablabla!! Alrighty! That’ll set the right fuckin’ mood for a record like this now doesn’t it?
Eighteen tracks that are rooted in elemental punkrock songwriting and musicianship. So politics, fast guitars, aggression, simple chord progression, fast as fuck and straightforward beats. All done flawless, by the way! The vocals are of the half shouted, half sung kinda Jello Biafra variety and at times display a rough sort of melodiousness which for some reason make me wanna fuck some chick in the ass. I know… Its weird, but this record wants me to fuck some chick in the ass. Seriously. (I guess I need some serious help, but first I’ll finish this review)
Sunpower aren't trying to move punkrock forward nor backward, but it is easily knowledgeable that these guys enjoy bands like MDC, Minor Threat and Dead Kennedys. So the band scours the genre's old annals to find sounds that work for ‘em, and present them in a loving and knowing manner which any good old school HC or punkrock kid can enjoy. There are nods to 70s British punkrock, but its mainly the frenetic hardcorepunk of the Dead Kennedys that is felt during this twenty minutes (and a bit) funhouse.
Pain For Profit is one of those albums that gives the kids a proper face-shredding experience and as long as they keep pedal to the metal or even when they bring alittle swagger in their sound this is nothing less than a fuckin’ European masterpiece! Seriously; If you appreciate the craftsmanship it takes to make fast punkrock ya’ll will love Sunpower!
(I know this is not a dating site, but if any of you girls out there wanna have some buttsex like Jesus forbade us while spinning this record just call me!
My standards are lower than the ones your crackwhore mom has! Only difference is you won't get any STD's from me... Now where's that number of that shrink again?)
www. europunk.net

Score: 90/100

BONDAGE reviews
Sunpower from Belgium return with another 10 songs of good oldschool punk/hardcore. Again they succeed in mixing the urge and speed of Minor Threat with the catchyness and punkfeel of the Dead Kennedys. Great band, great release
Crucial Attack

SUNPOWER - Bondage LP The new record of Belgium’s SUNPOWER is now available. Bondage was recorded in 2 days and mixed in 2 evenings, as a punk record should be and gives us 10 new songs with the genuine SUNPOWER sound… Don’t expect any weird chord progressions, it’s what you could expect of SUNPOWER, hardcore punk reminding of bands like DEAD KENNEDY's, MINOR THREAT and ANGRY SAMOANS, played with furious energy and fast paced lyrics that deal with subjects as Guantanamo Bay, rednecks and leather boots. Bondage is the third record of SUNPOWER and, as cliché as it might sound, their most mature to date!

Brand new 12" from this Belgian band with a very different sound from what a lot of bands are doing these days. Rather than going for a full-bore HC assault, these guys are clearly inspired by the sarcasm and bile of bands like Dead Kennedys and the early Freeze stuff. Like the DKs they rely on a lot of weird, noodly guitar parts to give their music that drunken spaghetti western feel, but like both of the aforementioned bands they also have a HC intensity about them. Very cool to hear a band pursuing this style and doing it so well. Crucial Attack Records

Back to basics Hardcore PUNK from Belgium. These dudes have been around for most of the last decade and their efforts have largely gone unnoticed. That kind of endears me more towards them actually, but yeh they're one of the best live bands I've played with - and this record is good stuff; sped up punk with vocals that dip into Jello-esque territory. The guitarist too nods his cap to the Dead Kennedys giving the record a surf-ish vibe. It doesn't stop there though, I mean they're stealing riffs from plenty of your favourite bands. This record is great for anyone who's got bored of Dean Dirg.

Sunpower sounds like someone loved the Dead Kennedys and tried to go out of their way to imitate them but have since pulled back away from that track and while the guitar tone and vocal style are still there, there’s enough of a distinction that allows you to enjoy Sunpower on their own merits.
Bondage is their third LP release and their second studio album, following 2009’s Live and 2007’s Say Something. Coming five years into their career as a band, Say Something was full of sharp bursts of snotty songs full of sarcasm and ‘abilly twang. It was fun, and political with lots of callbacks to previous musicians but never in a way that was self-consciously reflexive. Say Something was a fun fast little ditty of an album.

Bondage is not a huge step up from previous, but it is certainly an evolution of their sound. It has the tendency to fall down and sound like Dead Kennedys at time, but not so much that it’s totally distracting.
The songs deal with your standard political hardcore themes. Disliking authority figures, Guantanamo Bay, being broke as fuck, the scene. Complaining about these things is like complaining about action movie tropes. I feel like if you get an album in a certain genre, you should just expect these types of songs, and then become pleasantly surprised when it transcends.
And Sunpower does transcend with at least one song. My favorite song on the album is the final, longest song “When The Spirit’s Gone”, a great marrying of the jingle jangle guitar and driving step drum snap with punk rock intensity, but the best moment is when the tempo drops to half speed and the guitar feeds back on itself opening up the sound in a way that made me go “wow.” It was totally unexpected and is a great way to end this album.
One thing that kind of annoys me about this release is the three formats in which the album has been released. One standard 33 RPM with all ten tracks repeated on both sides (the one I have), a 45 RPM version which splits the ten tracks across both sides and then one which is split across four 7” releases which comes with four additional tracks. I complain only because I can’t seem to find this 7” release and I would like to hear the additional songs.
Bondage isn’t great art, but it is great fun and a great example of how hardcore can still be a lot of fun. I eagerly look forward to Sunpower’s next releases. www.kingofthegigabitches.com

HARDCORE-PUNK. SUNPOWER from Belgium with a superb debut full-length and 10 songs in between 80s Hardcore a la CIRCLE JERKS and earlier 70s American Punkrock in the vein of DEAD KENNEDYS. Super catchy choruses and fast songs that will please all the SNIFFING GLUE, DEAN DIRG and LIGHTS OUT! fans out there. Minimalistic, simple and straight in the middle, shredded down in under 19 minutes.

Underdog
"I'm a member of the Anti-Scene!"

Tough, mean and rough!
Score: 80/100
Cruel Hand - Lock & Key

If there wouldn't have been a song about Guantanamo Bay on this album, I bet you easily could've fooled people into believing that 'Bondage' was made circa 1980.
It's obvious from which bands Sunpower from Opwijk, Belgium takes it's cues. Singer Mike Du Bois tries hard to sound like Jello Biafra and does a pretty good job at it, while the music clearly reminds of, obviously, Dead Kennedys, mixed with some Minor Threat and Circle Jerks.
From a pessimistic point of view you could say that these guys just mimic their heroes. But even if that's true, they sure do a great job at it and they help to keep a style of music alive that's worth being kept alive.
The LP version of this album contains ten songs with an average length of just a little more than a minute, the CD has four extra songs.
(ASICE 2010)

SUNPOWER “Bondage” LP - Go!rilla
I like Sunpower, but I don’t listen to them as much as I should, so I will make sure I rectify that with this new album as it’s a good one. The songs still have that early Dead Kennedys feel to them, as well as having a distinct Spermbirds vibe; which I guess backs up my earlier statement that this is a very good album. Another good sign, I think, is that the album seems to be over way too quickly meaning you want to listen to it all over again, and again. Sunpower have a sound that harks back to the earliest days of melodic hardcore punk, but also sounds fresh and exciting and perfectly relevant in 2010; don’t let this one pass you by.
Go!rilla: www.gorillarecords.bigcartel.com (Tony - Suspect Device zine)

Belgian hardcore punk heavily influenced by early DEAD KENNEDYS – nice and fast, nice a short and with those surf-like guitar lines too – tracks like ‘Leather Boots’ and ‘Redneck Talk’ could be unreleased cuts from ‘Fresh Fruit…’ but SUNPOWER is not a DK-copy band, they definitely inject their own sound into this classic style, besides who cares if it’s influenced by the DK’s? We need a new DK in 2010!! I dig this a lot…it’s just killer West Coast style early ‘80’s hardcore…it’s a hell of a lot of fun and has a great nostalgic feeling too.
