   CHRIS HILLMAN and HERB PEDERSEN

Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, Utrecht, Holland - May 7, 2006

FOREWORD and THANKS

Unfortunately, we were unable to attend this year's Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen performance in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

The event took place at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg on May 7, 2006.

Fortunately, some of Byrds Flyght visitors were there to watch the event and send us a review and pictures.

Thank to Huib Krijgsman (who reviewed the concert), to Cobi Kamp (who sent the pictures) and to Amber (Cobi's daughter - she took the pictures).

Special thanks to Jaap Hindriks, who regularly organizes concerts in Holland, and particularly a yearly event called the Blue Highways Festival (Chris and Herb headlined several editions). Visit Jaapís festival pages at http://www.vredenburg.nl/blue_highways/intro.htm

Review by HUIB KRIJGSMAN

Chris and Herb played last Sunday in the Vredenburg and only the shortness of their set was disappointing. I have seen no reports from the other stints in Europe, so it could have been this show being last on the tour. Chris had some voice trouble at first, on the other hand he sang stronger as the concert continued, to the point that it compared to SOTR/Gilded Palace-days.

They did Hickory Wind, standards like Turn, Turn, Turn, Love Reunited and It Doesnít Matter, Wake Up Little Susie with their Dutch friends Bluegrass Boogiemen (the only time Chris picked up the guitar) and You ain't going nowhere together with British support act King & Cook. After singing Together Again Chris mentioned Buck Owens and his recent funeral.

With the mandoline Chris played it often like guitarsolos. Seems like another way of playing mandoline and more difficult too, like the opening lick of Turn Turn Turn. Am I wrong to say that Chris has his own style in this ? Anyway it shows the pleasure that these guys have performing. And it's just this that makes you leave the concert in a cheery mood and hoping they'll be back soon.
