07/07/08 From backstreets.com: Magic Tour Highlights, an EP by Bruce Springsteen, available on July 15, 2008, embraces the digital era, delivering mp3s and videos online with no physical release currently planned. The EP will be available for download from all digital downloads stores, including the iTunes Store and Amazon.com. Four songs from Bruce and the E Street Band's spring 2008 U.S. leg have been selected, each highlighting a special guest -- if you count Danny Federici's re-emergence for his only 2008 appearance, what turned out to be his final performance in Indianapolis. A "guest spot" or not, it was an emotional high point of the tour that's captured here, along with three other unique performance highs. The tracks: "Always a Friend" with Alejandro Escovedo (April 14, Houston) "The Ghost of Tom Joad" with Tom Morello (April 7, Anaheim) "Turn! Turn! Turn!" with Roger McGuinn (April 23, Orlando) "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" with Danny Federici (March 20, Indianapolis) In addition to the audio tracks, each of these will be available in accompanying live videos.

06/09/08 From GROWING BOLDER:
Historic Rock and
Roll Home Movie Rediscovered
Orlando, Fla. (June 8, 2008) After spending nearly 40 years in a drawer in
Roger McGuinn’s home, a movie that Paul McCartney described as “brilliant”
has found its way to the Internet on
www.GrowingBolder.com.
In 1965, The Byrds'
Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, and David Crosby wrote the song that created
psychedelic rock, Eight Miles High, about their plane trip to England. Two
years later, The Byrds returned to London and McGuinn took along his movie
camera to capture the story behind the song. Editing inside the camera,
McGuinn created a one-take short film and added Eight Miles High as the
soundtrack.
“I had seen an
experimental film by a guy named Bruce Conner whose style was to go click,
click, click, and then run a few seconds of film,” McGuinn tells Growing
Bolder. “The end result is really fast, jumpy images that I thought would
be interesting with Eight Miles High.”
The entire film, along with McGuinn’s introduction and description, can be
seen at
www.growingbolder.com/media/Entertainment/Music/Historic-Home-Movie-152484.html
“The film is a piece
of rock history,” says Growing Bolder executive producer Katy Widrick.
“We’re excited to help keep it alive.“

06/04/08 David Crosby and Graham Nash's album David Crosby / Graham Nash will be re-released soon on Rhino with 4 bonus tracks1 Southbound Train 13 Call Of The Wreckin' Ball 14 Year 1 15 Johnny Hit And Run Pauline UPDATE 06/05/2008: Here's what Byrds Flyght visitor John Ward from the U.K. wrote to us: I'm just wondering whether the information about the newly announced bonus tracks is strictly accurate. 'Johnny Hit and Run Pauline' was originally by the punk group, X. Similarly, 'Call of the Wreckin Ball' was by new wave outfit, The Knitters. Both Amazon.com and CDUniverse.com have listed the forthcoming Rhino release as being without bonus tracks. If I'm wrong about this then we are certainly going to be in for an interesting missing chapter in Crosby's musical development! UPDATE 06/24/2008: DEFINITELY NO BONUS TRACKS ON THIS RE-RELEASE

05/23/08 Gene Clark on The Flying Burrito Brothers' version of Tried So Hard : the end of a myth. We just received the following article from Jean-Pierre Morisset : As far back as january 1975, in my very first article on Gene Clark published in ZigZag issue # 49, I wrote: 'Gene played a few gigs with The Flying Burrito Bros who had just lost Gram Parsons during the summer (1970), and at one point it was believed that Clark was going to become a permanent member of the group. But of course he didn't; the only result of this short-lived alliance was the Burritos' recording of Clark's "Tried So Hard" as their next single, with Gene singing the bass part of the back-up vocals ...'Years later, in issue # 39/40 of Bucketfull Of Brains dated march 1992, I even added: '... in a version different from the one that was later used on the Burritos' third album where Gene's voice was replaced by Rick Roberts.'Owning the rare A&M single "Tried So Hard" and having listened to it very carefully with headphones, I was sure to have identified a bass vocal which in my mind could only be Gene's voice, following his involvment with the Burritos' GP-less quartet during the summer of 1970. But unfortunately it's not the case ! After almost thirty eight years of belief, I finally asked Chris Hillman to confirm Gene's presence on that single. And here's what Chris wrote me: 'Gene was not on the Burritos' recording of "Tried So Hard": he didn't sing any harmonies on the song. In fact, as good of a lead singer as Gene was, he couldn't sing parts or alternate harmonies. Gene sang lead on "Here Tonight" by the Burritos, which was released later on a compilation album.'Returning to my archives after this historical point was cleared by Hillman, I finally found out that Rick Roberts had joined the FBB not in september after the recording session for the single, but in august, in time for the recording of the song, which was rush-released in october 1970, before a tour of Europe by The Flying Burrito Bros' new five-men line-up. Why his high voice can't be heard on the recording is unclear: maybe producer Jim Dickson purposedly choose not to mix Rick's harmonies upfront, as he was not familiar with the newcomer's voice. Anyway, another take the song was used on the Burritos' third LP released in may 1971, with Rick's high voice more prominent: had Jim Dickson in between realized the potential of such a harmony singer ? Maybe.

Mudcrutch
(Released April 28th on Reprise)
Very few bands
take thirty-five years to release their debut album, but Mudcrutch are no
ordinary band.
Originally named
The Sundowners and then The Epics, the band changed their name to
Mudcrutch around 1970. When the band split up, Tom Petty
and his Heartbreakers cohorts Mike Campbell and Benmont
Trench achieved worldwide success. Now they’ve reunited with guitarist
Tom Leadon and drummer Randall Marsh and will release
their self-titled debut album on April 28th on
Reprise.
“I made a
commitment at the beginning of this project that I wanted it to be Mudcrutch
done as it was back in the day. I really wanted it to be that band,” explained
Petty. “ But why now? ”I guess I started thinking that we left some music
back there, and it was time to go and get it.” Petty’s idea of reuniting the band soon came to fruition. Tom Leadon, the brother of Bernie Leadon (previously of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Eagles), had spent several years giving guitar lesson while Randall Marsh had been playing in local bands. The album was subsequently recorded live with no overdubs in a recording studio built in The Heartbreakers’ rehearsal space. The result is a pure, energetic collection that highlights selected covers (David Dudley’s ‘Six Days on the Road’, The Byrds’ ‘Lover of the Bayou’, bluegrass staple ‘Shady Grove’) with strong originals from Petty, Campbell, Leadon and Tench. ‘Mudcrutch’ is an album that stands out due to the powerfully natural vocals harmonies of Petty and Leadon, as well as Leadon and Campbell’s complimentary guitar work.Notable original compositions include the infectious groove of ‘Topanga Cowgirl’, Tench’s ‘This is a Good Street’ and the energetic Campbell/Petty rocker ‘Bootleg Flyer’. Joe Lala will be in the drums stool, standing in for Michael Clarke. The current Firefall lineup will play alongside the original members.
04/01/08 A new live CD by Gene Clark has just been released by Collector's Choice. Silverado '75 - Live And Unreleased is a recording of the famous 1975 "Denver" concert that has been circulating among collectors for decades.

03/21/08 The Flying Burrito Brothers, the band's third album, and The Last Of The Red Hot Burritos, the live (fourth) album by the band, are planned to be re-released on CD by Raven Records in Australia with bonus tracks.
From Raven's website: Flying Burrito Bros/Last of the Red Hot Burritos (2-for-1) (RVCD-271) For the first time on one CD, Raven offers two classic country rock/bluegrass albums by the legendary FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS. The Flying Burrito Bros album (1971) is acknowledged as a prime example of country rock, and most significantly the great lost Burritos live album Last of the Red Hot Burritos (1972) has been made available on CD. These albums are the last two that ex-Byrd and Burritos co-founder Chris Hillman produced with the band. The Burritos were among the originators of country rock and when Gram Parsons left in 1970, singer songwriter Rick Roberts joined. His contribution to The Flying Burrito Bros is immense, including such memorable performances as ‘Colorado’ and excellent covers of Merle Haggard’s ‘White Line Fever’ and Dylan’s ‘To Ramona’. For Last of the Red Hot Burritos the band added a significant bluegrass component as displayed on blazing versions of ‘Orange Blossom Special’ and ‘Dixie Breakdown’. In addition there are four Parsons-era classics (‘Devil in Disguise’, ‘My Uncle’, ‘High Fashion Queen’, ‘Hot Burrito #2’) and rocked up country and soul covers (‘Six Days on the Road’, ‘Don’t Fight It’, ‘Losing Game’) which only add to the album’s appeal. This top value 2-for-1 CD includes two rare Bonus Tracks: ‘Here Tonight’ with ex-Byrd Gene Clark plus the original 45-RPM version of ‘Tried so Hard’, also featuring Clark, which has likewise never been issued on CD before. Features colour booklet, informative liner notes and superb quality audio. TRACK LISTING The Flying Burrito Bros (1971) 1. WHITE LINE FEVER Last of the Red Hot Burritos (1972) 11. be essentially a Byrds tribute show, I had a wonderful opportunity to be
interviewed on George Maida’s “Electric Croude” music and interview show that

theme of this particular show is the Byrds Rickenbacker Sound. The show
features interview segments with me along with selected tracks from my second
CD and a nice selection of Byrds, Roger McGuinn and related tracks that
feature the Rickenbacker Electric 12 String guitar.
For those not in the
Richmond, VA listening area, the show will be simulcast on the internet at the
following web site starting at 12 midnight US Eastern Standard Time Saturday

09/02/07 It's been revealed in late august 2007 by an undisputable source that Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke both play on both Dillards tracks on the "Early L.A." 08/30/07 UPDATED We here at Byrds Flyght have just received the brand new double DVD called THE BYRDS - UNDER REVIEW - A DOCUMENTARY FILM With 3 hours and 13 minutes dedicated to The Byrds, it allows some people who were involved with the Byrds (including ex-members John York and Gene Parsons) to express their points of view for the first time on such a release. Five minutes into watching, and already incredible exerpts from live performances by The New Christy Minstrels with Gene Clark! We've spent the last 3 and a half hours viewing these DVDs, and there's no other thing like that for true Byrds fans. It goes deep into details of all eras of the band's career. Recommended!!!
The Byrds Under Review is a documentary film, which explores in detail the music, career and background of arguably America’s most influential band. Inventors of folk-rock and country-rock, and with a sizeable investment in what became garage-rock (and ultimately Punk), The Byrds could barely write a song without creating a new genre. With the aid of many who were there at the time, as either part of the group or close at hand, this 2 DVD set is a celebration of one of Rock N’ Roll’s truly great bands. Features Include: Rare and classic performances re-assessed by our panel of experts Footage and interviews from then and now Exclusive and extensive contributions from Byrds members John York and Gene Parsons, plus further enlightenment from collaborators such as producer and arrange Van Dyke Parks, LA scenester and Wrecking Crew guitarist Jerry Cole, fiddle player Byron Berline and country guitarist Vern Gosdin Opinion, review and critique from: The Byrds esteemed biographer Johnny Rogan; ex-Rolling Stone editor Anthony DeCurtis; legendary music historian and author of Eight Miles High: Folk-Rock’s Flight from Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock, Richie Unterberger and British music journalist and author Nigel Williamson Seldom seen footage of pre-Byrds collectives Live and studio recordings of Byrds classics such as ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’,‘I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better’, ‘Eight Miles High’, ‘Mr Spaceman’, ‘So You Want To Be A Rock N’ Roll Star’, ‘Hickory Wind’, ‘Chestnut Mare’ and many others Extra Features Include Gene Parsons demonstrates his ‘StringBender’ – the guitar effect he invented for Byrd Clarence White Jerry Cole recalls – tales of Phil Spector, Charles Manson and other LA notables The John York Page Full Contributor Biographies

08/02/07 Gene Clark and Carla Olson IN CONCERT CD released on August 7
From Collector's Choice website: After he left the Byrds, Gene Clark’s solo career had its ups and downs on record, but right to the very end he was performing for audiences transfixed by the power of his songwriting and by the passion of the man. With this 'Collectors’ Choice Music' exclusive, we bring you a mixture of rare and unreleased live material, much of it with his performing partner of the ’80s, ex-Textones leader Carla Olson. The first disc features a *completely unreleased* solo performance taped for the Mountain Stage radio show in West Virginia from 1988; songs include 'Silver Raven; Tried So Hard; My Marie; Rodeo Rider; Gypsy Rider; Train Leaves Here This Morning', and 'Hear the Wind'. To that performance we’ve added three rare tracks that only appeared previously on Rhino’s 1987 version of the Gene Clark & Carla Olson studio album, 'So Rebellious a Lover'; recorded in Gene’s living room in 1989, the songs are 'Number One Is to Survive; Mary Sue', and 'Del Gato'. And disc two squeezes the entire double-album (minus some between-song chatter) of Gene and Carla’s 1990 performance at McCabe’s Guitar Shop that only saw an overseas release as 'Silhouetted in Light'; songs include 'Your Fire Burning; Number One Is to Survive; Love Wins Again; Fair & Tender Ladies; Photograph; Set You Free This Time; Last Thing on My Mind; Gypsy Rider; Train Leaves Here This Morning; Almost Saturday Night; Del Gato; I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better; She Don’t Care About Time; Speed of the Sound of Loneliness; Will the Circle Be Unbroken', and 'Here Without You'. One of the great songwriters of our time.

Rum Is A Many Blendered Thing
Also in the band is Scott's brother Chuck Kirkpatrick. Scott has a notable history with artists such as McGuinn, Clark & Hillman (The Byrds), Firefall, Jaco Pastorius, Chuck Berry, Coco Montoya and Shirley Caesar to name a few. Chuck has been fortunate enough to play and sing with such luminaries as The Bee Gees, Firefall, Eric Clapton, America, Eddie Money, Meat Loaf, Harry Chapin, Coco Montoya and others too numerous to mention. He also engineered Derek and the Dominoes classic, "Layla." Chuck went by the name of Chuck Crane in the Seventies, and as such, played guitar on McGuinn & Hillman (featuring Gene Clark)'s album CITY. 08/22/06 Singer-songwriter Robert Wiersma from the Netherlands (influenced by The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers) has CD out called TIMES ON HOLD.
You can read more info, order the CD or download some songs for free from http://www.robertwiersma.com/
From the Americana UK site
"Lay Down Your Weary Tune
From the Netherlands, Wiersma has his eyes and ears firmly set on that melancholy singer/songwriter genre, perhaps best exemplified by Gene Clark on the “White Light “ album. With only guitar and vocals on show this isn’t by any means a bad attempt. He sings well and the guitars ripple and swell creating a sound best listened to in a late night fugue. However, and despite some strong lyrical pieces, there is little here that would stick around in the memory the morning after. Songwriters like Clark could weave pop songs from a bare thread, after a while these songs tend to coalesce into one with no standout. There are some songs that, after closer inspection, bear repeating. An Old Getaway has its finger fully on the pulse of classic American songwriting with echoes of Townes Van Zandt or Guy Clark. On Hold has a wonderful chiming guitar sound approaching that of the Byrds referencing Bach. More of this and the album could have been a contender. Perhaps a slow burner, but definitely some potential here for future development"
07/16/06 DELAYED! The often bootlegged Flying Burrito Brothers concert at The Avalon, San Francisco on 4/6/1969, which was planned to be released on CD this month on the Amoeba label, has apparently been delayed. from Byrds Flyght's Guest Book: "I'm told that Amoeba Music is delaying the release of its Flying Burrito Brothers CD, recorded live at the Avalon in San Francisco in 1969, until January 2007. It was supposed to come out this month. The good news is that the CD will have a distributor and be available at places other than Amoeba's stores (which are good places but exist only in Northern and Southern California)." The lineup was Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Michael Clarke, Chris Ethridge and Sneaky Pete Kleinow. More info when available.
GRAM PARSONS biography (co-written by his daughter Polly) to be published
From the Amazon website: "There has never been a better
time for a book on Gram Parsons. At the thirty-year anniversary of his death,
his sound, a mix of country and rock 'n' roll, is absolutely everywhere. Popular
musicians of today trace their inspiration to pick up a guitar to when they
first heard his music. His songs and his style have had a lasting effect on the
music of our time.

5/28/06 UPDATED WITH PICTURE Rhino Records will released a GRAM PARSONS 3 CD Box Set on June 20, 2006
From the Rhino website: "Produced by Emmylou Harris and Rhino's James Austin, the three-CD set is a comprehensive collection of Parsons' legendary recordings for Reprise. Disc one presents his 1973 solo debut, GP, plus seven bonus tracks, including a rare 1973 promo interview. Disc two presents 1974's posthumously released Grievous Angel, along with three bonus tracks, including another revealing interview. Disc three contains seven previously unissued alternate takes from the GP sessions and eight from the Grievous Angel sessions, plus three more solo outtakes released only on A&M's 1976 compilation Sleepless Nights." Rhino's COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS includes Remastered
and Expanded Versions of Gram Parsons' Solo Albums LOS ANGELES - The echo of Gram Parsons' cosmic American music still rings in the sound of today's alternative country just as his trailblazing work as a musician without boundaries continues to inspire all recording artists. And although books, tribute albums and movies have brought more recognition to Parsons' proto-country-rock sound since his tragic death in 1973, fans have seen tantalizingly few unreleased songs emerge from the vaults to burnish Parson's short but influential legacy. Thanks to a recently uncovered cache of master tapes, Rhino is able to add another chapter to Parsons' musical legend with GRAM PARSONS: COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS, a three-CD set featuring 16 previously unreleased outtakes from the GP and Grievous Angel sessions, as well as three hard-to-find tracks. Coproduced by Emmylou Harris, the three-disc CD set is available from Rhino June 20 at regular retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $34.98. The first two discs of COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS contain remastered versions of Parsons' two classic solo albums expanded with rare Parsons interviews and bonus tracks that feature Parsons and Emmylou Harris performing "Love Hurts" and "Sin City" live in the WBCN radio studio, as well as a stunning instrumental version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" that spotlights the improvisation skills of pianist Glen D Hardin and guitarist James Burton, who played on both of Parsons' solo albums. The final disc contains 15 alternate versions of
influential tracks from GP and Grievous Angel. Stellar versions in their own
right, the tracks feature Parsons and his tightly-knit band working through
stripped-down, semi-acoustic arrangements of "She," "Streets of Baltimore," "Ooh
Las Vegas," "Love Hurts," and a complete version of "Hickory Wind" minus the
overdubbed crowd noise found on the album version. The disc closes with a trio
of covers, including two Boudleaux Bryant songs made famous by The Everly
Brothers ("Brand New Heartache" and "Sleepless Nights") and The Louvin Brothers' The deluxe packaging for the CD set consists of a "clamshell" box holding three "mini albums" and a 52-page booklet that includes lyrics, many previously unseen photos, an introduction by Emmylou Harris, and liner note essays by Holly George-Warren and Parke Puterbaugh. GRAM PARSONS: COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS Track Listing Disc 1 - GP 1. "Still Feeling Blue" Bonus Tracks 12. GP Radio Promo Gram Parsons Interview13. How did you meet Emmylou

5/2/06 EDDIE TICKNER DIES
From John Delgatto (Sierra Records): It is with great sadness and a
deep lose that I report that Eddie Tickner passed away today in Tucson, AZ due
to complications from leukemia. He began his career as a manager/accountant
for Odetta in the 50s. Eddie and his partner Jim Dickson were the original
managers/producers/music publishers of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros. Later
they would guide the careers in the same role for the Country Gazette,
Clarence White and of course Gram Parsons. Finally, it was Eddie who secured a
record deal for Emmylou Harris after Gram's death and he managed her career
through the 80s.
Byrds Flyght note:
Eddie Tickner was married to Delores (nee Ianthe)
McGuinn, and so was stepdad to Roger McGuinn's sons, Patrick and Henry.

"I met Sally Spring about thirty years ago while touring
through the South. I was taken by her wonderful voice, her gentle and soulful
approach to song, her guitar and I was taken particularly with Sally as a
person. Her vocal phrasing is unique and pleasing with a voice so rich and
full that there is always more to discover as you listen over and over. She
was fantastic thirty years ago but now she has even more depth and maturity in
her performance. She is a treasure."

UPDATED 11/27/05 (10/15/05) Roger McGuinn's Folk Den Project 4 CDs Box Set now released:
"In November of 1995 I began a project for the preservation of the music I love, Folk Music. Each month I would record a song, print the lyrics and chords, add a personal note and put it on my web site, mcguinn.com. I wanted everyone to have the opportunity to learn the songs and to be able to sing them with their families and friends, so downloads were offered free of charge. The original recordings were 11 KHz 8-bit . monophonic WAV files, far below CD quality. I have re-recorded those songs in 24-bit 44.1 KHz Stereo. To commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the FOLK DEN, this compilation contains 100 of my favorite songs from the project with many of the original notes. Email preorder-fd@aprilfirstproductions.com to be notified of the availability of the Folk Den Project 4 CD Set"

Graham Nash: "...quite a brilliant representation of David's musical path." "Also in the pipeline, two re-releases with bonus tacks: "Crosby Stills Nash" (1969's "Couch Album") and "Daylight Again"" Thanks to SPIN viewer Paul for confirming the above and adding the following from the Graham Nash site: "Me and Joel and Stanley Johnston have just completed the re-mastering of the first CSN album (with 4 extra tracks....me and David's demo of 'Teach Your Children'... 'Do For The Others' with me and Stephen... 'Everybody's Talkin'..and a great take of 'Song With No Words'...Then we re-mastered and added 4 songs to the 'Daylight Again' album..'Tomorrow Is Another Day' by Stephen... 'Feel Your Love' by Stephen and I... A brilliant performance of 'Might As Well Have A Good Time' with Craig Doerge on piano and Crosby doing the vocals....and finally 'Raise A Voice'.. by Stephen and I... 8/22/05 Byrds percussionist and long time roadie JIMMI SEITER writes to BYRDS FLYGHT for all Byrds and
Byrds & Burrito
Bros. Fans:
As a true Byrds / FBB
Fan, you might already know who I am. I was that other guy that you might have
seen filling in on TV shows or playing percussion on stage or making sure that
all was ready on stage before a show. Possibly even in an interview or whatever.
My name is Jimmi Seiter
and I was the Road manager, Manager, Equipment manager, Baby Sitter,
Percussionist, Tour manager, Peace Maker pretty much all of the above and
everything else to the Byrds for most of their live performance career. I joined
the band just as they were beginning to play concerts and left for a brief time
to join the Flying Burrito Brothers at Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman and Michael
Clarke's request as Manager and all of the above, then back to the Byrds until
very near the end of their touring days.
I have many photos from
those days that have never been seen and some that have been used without my
permission in many books etc. The photos are from the many Byrds groups as well
as the original FBB band and Gram Parsons. Many of these photos are available
from my Ebay Store Dukiewoods.
If you have any
interest in purchasing any of this Rock & Roll memorabilia or whatever, feel
free to respond. If not still continue to enjoy the music as I was a part of
most of it and there was a lot of love put into those tracks.
Thanks for your time,
Jimmi Seiter

8/9/05 Alan Rockman writes: If you missed McCabes, you
missed a truly wonderful show. The "boys" were top-notch as usual and
joining them was their long-time associate, Larry Park. Larry played lead guitar
on "Bakersfield Bound", "Way Out West" and "The Other
Side" and it was fascinating to see how he mastered the licks Clarence
White originally played on "Time Between" and Gene Clark's "Tried
So Hard" as well as the Byrds, Burritos, DRB, Manassas tunes. I am pleased to let you know
that Chris and Herb, and Jackson Browne will be headlining the Avila Beach Music
Festival in Avila Beach, California on Saturday, October 29, 2005. The concert
will benefit S.M.I.L.E.\Options, an organization that many of you might know is
very close to both Chris and Herb's hearts. Alan

New GENE CLARK recording to be released in March 2005 From Thomas Aubrunner's Gib Guilbeau Pages: "Musicians Anonymous" are working on a new CD! On the CD, that will be coming out in about 5 month (Feb./March 2005), the musicians are Gib Guilbeau, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Chris Ethridge, Bobby Cochran, Bob Warford (all ex-Flying Burrito Brothers), Shannon O'Neill, Spooner Oldham, John Molo, Hyland Church, Ronnie Guilbeau and probably a few others. On the CD there will be a song sung by Gene Clark and all of the band playing on it!" Byrds Flyght has learned that the song will be ALL I WANT (the first available version was on "This Byrd Has Flown"). It will be another version with a different Gene Clark vocal, added to a newly recorded backing track by the above mentioned musicians. BUT... Gene Clark's estate vetoes the release of this song.... lifted from the Gene Clark Internet Forums: "An open letter: Simply
because someone owns a piece of tape with someone's voice on it does not give
the person the legal let alone ethical right to make it commercially available. There
are obviously a few reasons for this including that a creative person should be
in control of his or her work. So important is this that the law, both Common
Law and by statute, gives heirs the power to control the estates of those who
have so willed such be the case or of those who die without a will. Further,
the estate should benefit from monies generated not people who do not have
contractual rights. Not people who only have physical possesion. In
other words, no, there will not be a song with Gene's voice turning up legally
in March of 05 unless those who purport to "own" this recording make a
deal with Gene's estate ie Kelly & Kai Clark. However, fear not, there will indeed be more Gene music. An album is in the planning. A quality album of concert recordings. Saul Davis"

ROGER MCGUINN items will be auctioned at Cooper Owen’s next ROCK LEGENDS live auction at the Hard Rock Café, Old Park Lane, London on Wednesday 13th April at 7pm.
The spruce-top acoustic guitar confirmed as Byrd's lead singer Roger McGuinn's first 12-string. McGuinn has mentioned the instrument in several articles, mistaking it for a Stella but the vendor has established that the guitar is in fact a Regal, authenticated by vintage guitar expert George Grunn and bluesman Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart, which was obtained by McGuinn circa 1957. This historic guitar was given to the vendor by musician and song writer Hoyt Axton who Mcguinn had opened for early in his career, and rented a room from whilst a struggling performer. According to Axton Mcguinn left him the guitar in lieu of rent. Axton then gave the guitar to the vendor, a promising 13 year old guitarist, telling her of its connection with the then relatively unknown McGuinn. Around 1977 the vendor saw McGuinn perform at the Starwood Club, West Hollywood and afterwards went backstage where she re-met McGuinn and told him about the guitar (she had previously met him whilst performing with Axton). Apparently McGuinn smiled at the recollection of his time with Axton and told her he was happy it was in such good hands. This rare and important instrument is sold together with Hoyt Axton's original German hard shell guitar case. Price on application.

In
1964 Jim McGuinn (later changing his name to Roger) formed the Byrds and
invented the folk-rock movement, with songs such as 'Mr Tambourine Man' and
'Turn,Turn, Turn', lending the perfect sound track to the seventies. 'The
jangling, 12-string guitar sound of Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker was permanently
absorbed into the vocabulary of rock', inspiring the likes of The Beatles, Led
Zeppelin, REM and innumerable others. This electronic Rickenbacker sound which
formed the backbone to the Byrds innovative sound developed directly from
McGuinn's early acoustic folk efforts on this guitar. The
lot is accompanied by:
-An
image of the young Jim (later Roger) Mc Guinn playing the guitar, the pick
guard visible in the picture had been replaced prior to Hoyt Axton giving it
to the vendor, the existing pickguard was professionally installed in late
1964.-A letter of authenticity from Hoyt Axton.-A letter from Bill Elkins who
was with the vendor when she met Roger McGuinn in 1977.

Byrds percussionist and long time roadie JIMMI SEITER writes to Byrds Flyght's Guest Book Jimmi Seiter ( jduke46684@aol.com)"I was so much a part of the Byrds that reading these comments makes me feel like we did a good thing for so many people. The band and the players that played in the band were all my friends and I miss those that have passed on. Those days were so special, the times, the music, and the people. I have so many fond memories of those days in my minds eye. I hope that you all keep up the dream that the Byrds took to the world. Thanks." Roger McGuinn and Bob Dylan co-writer JACQUES LEVY dies From Rolling Stone: Broadway, rock & roll writer was sixty-nine
Old footage by The FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS appears in a movie (DVD release planned on 11/2/2004)
"In 1970, a trainload of rock's elite (The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Band and others) rocked, rolled and jammed their way across Canada in an extended bacchanal. Never-before-seen footage immortalizes performances that capture the spirit of an unforgettable age." The Flying Burrito Brothers (with Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke but minus Gram Parsons) are seen performing a live version of LAZY DAY FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TORONTO (AP) -- Jerry Garcia jamming
with bluesman Buddy Guy. Acid-laced whiskey pouring from bottle to mouth. Music
legends howling till all hours as their train roars across the Canadian
countryside. "I don't know where you've been all week,'' Janis Joplin tells
a Calgary crowd near the end of the documentary ``Festival Express,'' but we've
been at a party.'' Because the issue remained unsettled in
court, the negatives ended up in the Canadian national archives and were
recovered in the 1990s. Bob Smeaton, a two-time Grammy-winning producer, signed
on as director and Eddie Kramer, who produced gems with Jimi Hendrix, Led
Zeppelin and countless others, handled the mix. Much of the dynamic footage was
shot by Peter Biziou, a cinematographer who later won an Academy Award for
``Mississippi Burning.''
CHRIS HILLMAN receives an award. An
excerpt from the article on Tennessean.com Hillman
smiled at his award, said a few words, then walked mid-stage to sing Wheels, a
song he wrote with Gram Parsons and recorded as a member of the Flying Burrito
Brothers. He dedicated the song to Parsons' daughter, Polly, and to Grand Ole
Opry member Skeeter Davis, who died Sunday.
The Desert Rose Band's last CD LIFE GOES ON will be available in the USA in early november from SIERRA RECORDS.
Unavailable for more since the late '90s and never released in the United States, this 1993 release was the last album recorded by the Desert Rose Band. Sierra is pleased to announce that they are accepting advance orders for this November 2nd release which will not be available from any other retail, mail order or internet outlet. With its prophetic album title song 'Life Goes On', this may have been the Desert Rose Band's best album ever! With only a couple of the band's US releases barely in print but soon to be deleted, this is a great opportunity to hear once again what a real country band sounds like! Most of the songs were co-written by Chris Hillman, which were and are some of his best ever. He was joined by original members Herb Pedersen on beautiful harmony vocals and Bill Bryson on bass with then new members, Tom Brumley (legendary steel player with Buck Owens and Rick Nelson), Jeff Ross on lead guitar and Tim Grogan, drums. Returning to their original producers, they were joined by special guests Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Al Perkins and original band member John Jorgenson. Even after ten years, what a way to say "Adios!" Songs: WHAT ABOUT LOVE / NIGHT AFTER NIGHT / WALK ON BY / LOVE'S REFUGEES / LIFE GOES ON / THAT'S NOT THE WAY / TILL IT'S OVER / HOLD ON / A LITTLE RAIN / THROW ME A LIFELINE.
SUNDAZED RECORDS will re-release Gram Parsons & The International Submarine Band's CD SAFE AT HOME in november 2004 with one bonus track. Details from Sundazed: "Just before Gram Parsons cut a wide swath through American music with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-era Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros., he forged a new musical genre with the seminal 1967 country-rock sides he cut with his legendary International Submarine Band. Sundazed Music, in conjunction with Shiloh Records, is proud to present a compact disc release of the ISB's highly collectible Safe At Home album, taken for the first time from the pristine, two-track stereo LHI-label masters, now sporting accurate original artwork, rare photos and a revealing new essay by noted author Sid Griffin. We've added the last piece to the jigsaw puzzle by remarrying the originally un-issued track "Knee Deep In The Blues" (recorded during the Safe At Home sessions) to this resoundingly important musical statement. It's a young, confident Gram Parsons here, showing the world he's ready for business and firing the first volley in an amazing (if too brief) career that would soon stand the rock 'n' roll world on its ear". TRACKS: Blue Eyes / I Must Be Somebody Else
You've Known / A Satisfied Mind /
Released on September 21 by Sundazed Records is a Boxset titled 'Cancelled Flytes' which contains 5 x 7" vinyl singles by The Byrds. These singles never really existed. It comprises of mono mixes prepared for release and then shelved by Columbia.

In a recent (5/20/2004) interview, ROGER MCGUINN said what follows about who played on The Byrds 1990 "Reunion Tracks" recorded for the 4 CDs Box Set: "When
the Byrds box set came out back in '91, Sony Music said "Well, would you
guys be willing to do some new tracks?", so we went to Nashville and Crosby
and Hillman were there, and we did a couple of songs together; then it was time
to do my song, that Stan Lynch and I had written together called "Love That
Never Dies" right? So Crosby and Hillman bug out. They said "Well you
guys can handle it." [laughter] So Stan Lynch,
They really fooled us, didn't they?

You can purchase Mike Headrick's CD from his web site: http://countrydiscovery.com/store.php Here's a review by TOM ISENHOUR (lifted from the Clarence White Forum webpage): I got it today. Listened to all 15 songs by Byrds/FBB/DRB/GP and this guy is right on the money with capturing the right sound on these songs we all like to hear. It's like a sing alone karaoke CD. You can't help but sing along with this one. He is real dedicated to getting the correct sound and tone the originals put out. In fact he's using the right instruments for it to sound original. You can't get the Sneaky sound unless you got that Fender steel. You need a long pull bender to get the CW sound just right and he's on the money. Almost so perfect in fact I would swear Sneaky, JD, Chris Hillman, CW came into the studio to help him on this project of love and devotion to the roots of countryrock. This guy is so good if Chris wanted to put another DRB on the road this guy could fill in for Jorgeson or JD. I remember Jorgeson would change guitars for just about each song and this guy does too in order to capture the right mood and tone of these songs. I like Steels and this CD is full of steels doing the songs I like best.

Unfortunately, his disappointment was bigger than his expectations, as the song is actually Johnny Cash's version!

GRAM PARSONS Tribute Concert to be held in London, UK EVAN
DANDO, ED
HARCOURT and
JIM LAUDERDALE
are to headline 'STANDING IN THE SHADOW OF
THE GRIEVOUS ANGEL' on November 15 in a
tribute concert to country-rock legend GRAM
PARSONS. Taking
place at London's Islington Union Chapel as part of the Barbican's 'Way Beyond
Nashville' season, the intimate gig will mark the 30th anniversary of Gram
Parsons’ death - aged just 26 - which
fell on September 19. The line-up will also include Grand
Drive, The Coal Porters, Adam
Masterson and Gram
Parsons' only child Polly
Parsons. The
Sin City All Stars,
featuring BJ Cole,
will be the house band for the event. Gram
Parsons found fame through The
International Submarine Band,
The
Byrds, The
Flying Burrito Brothers as well as through
his solo work, though tragically died on September 19, 1973 when he overdosed on
morphine and tequila at The Joshua Tree Inn in the Californian desert. His
death also took a bizarre twist when road manager Phil
Kaufman stole Gram
Parsons' body, took it back to the desert,
doused it in petrol and burned it.
California country band DAVE GLEASON'S WASTED DAYS recorded a unreleased/unheard GRAM PARSONS song on their self titled debut cd on Well Worn records in 2002. The song was pulled from a bootleg cassette, and it is called "FUNKY STRING QUARTET".

JOHN YORK writes to Byrds Flyght about his newly released CD John York and Yukiko Matsuyama have just released their first CD together entitled "Koto".
Here's what John writes to Byrds Flyght (reprinted with permission): Hi
Raoul, The CD is called "KOTO." Yukiko Matsuyama is a brilliant koto player from Osaka, Japan. We have been playing concerts together for a couple of years. Some of the cuts were recorded live at those concerts and some were recorded at my studio. Except for the Beatle tune "Tomorrow Never Knows," all the music is original, composed by Yukiko, myself and artist Sumi Nakano in various combinations. Some cuts are instrumental and some have vocals. I sing in Japanese and English. I play 12 string, slide and gu zheng (a Chinese table harp). Yukiko plays koto (Japanese zither) and gu zheng as well. The image of this CD is the artwork on the cover entitled "Koto". It has a poem in Japanese stitched into it. I learned the poem and set it to music. So I had to sing it in Japanese. Another poem by Sumi Nakano I sing in English and Japanese. It is very new musical territory. A new musical bridge. You know I consider this my musical mission in life. (Remember "Sacred Path Songs"?) Any way, I hope your website visitors will find this CD inviting. And thanks again for all your inspiration and assistance. Best wishes, John York The CD is only available through John York at the moment. The price is $20.00 US which also covers postage inside US and handling. Checks should be made out to John York and sent to John York, P.O Box 261, Claremont, CA 91711, USA.

Roger McGuinn-less Byrds concert in 1967? Yes, it happened! In october 1967, Gene Clark briefly rejoined The Byrds after David Crosby had been fired. Before the end of october, he left again. Then, in november 1967, it was Michael Clarke's turn to leave. He was replaced by Kevin Kelley, and the lineup (as from the end of november 1967) was Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Kevin Kelley. The band was booked to appear at the Winterland, San Francisco in december 1967. Roger McGuinn came down with the flu, and was unable to perform. Gene Clark was called to fill in, and the lineup for this particular performance was Gene Clark(playing a Gretsch), Chris Hillman and Kevin Kelley. Anyone owning a recording of this performance, please step forward!

New BYRDS compilation released in the U.K. : MOJO presents...an Introduction to THE BYRDS (24 classic tracks - all previously released)
The 2 CDs reissue of SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO by The BYRDS and The INTERNATIONAL SUBMARINE BAND is out! - read a review (thanks to Bob Wall)
The
reissue of Sweetheart Of The Rodeo is out in the U.S.. - I picked up a copy
last night. (I believe that the new Byrds Box Set is the item that has
been postponed until 2004). In brief, the packaging for the Legacy edition is
very nice - the CDs come in what can be described as a gatefold digipack
(after you remove the vinyl slip cover with titles and promo blurbs). The
first fold out contains a silhouette-type band on stage picture (only Mcguinn's
features appear out of shadow) against a yellowish backdrop with the
band's name appearing twice and the same yellow flowers that appear in the
shape of a heart serving as a border. In turn, these open up to reveal
color photos of Chris, Gram and Roger on the left and the full band on the
right (again with the yellow flower borders). The discs sit in the middle
panels above photos of the session tape box cover notes. The left panel
contains a pocket in which the booklet sits. David Fricke's essay is
informative and acknowledges Mcguinn, Hillman, Lloyd Green, Jon Corneal, Rick
Clark and Steve Fishell for "their insights and contributions". Biggest
omissions: actual session credits and discussion of the newly presented
outtakes and rehearsals (for example, why these takes were chosen).
Byrds
Flyght's observations as to the inclusion of the ISB tracks are well
warranted. I feel they are somewhat akin to the early Crosby tracks that
were grafted onto the Preflyte sessions. Nice to have (for those who didn't
have them already), but not of a piece with the main dish. It would have made
as much sense to include earlier forays by the Byrds into country. For
that matter, it would have been a major coup if they had unearthed the rumored
sessions featuring Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Clarence White, Gib Guilbeau
& Gene Parsons (the "prototype Burritos"). But I digress - those
aren't really part of the Sweetheart story. I assume that the Grand Ole Opry
performance isn't available or of sufficient quality to release but they
would've been more appropriate. Similarly, live recordings from the Parsons-Byrds
era might have been interesting but again the quality of the performance
and/or recording might have prevented this. I need to spend more time with the
outtakes but the first run through sounded interesting. This release atones
somewhat for the bizarre decision to omit the Gram Parsons lead vocals from
the original album reissue. Oh, I almost forgot: "All I Have Are Memories"
is a nice treat (and writing credit goes to Kevin Kelley, not White/Green as
per Lloyd Green's interview.)

Another Gram Parsons documentary movie in the make Gram Parsons Film Nearing Completion News
on a new project nearing completion: "Thirty years after his untimely
death, a thoroughly researched and internationally produced documentary film
about the musical legend Gram Parsons is in the works and expected to be
finished still this year. His exciting biography, the bizarre circumstances of
his early death and his important role in the development of popular music are
major themes of the documentary "Fallen Angel Gram Parsons" which is a
co-production of the Berlin- and Düsseldorf-based Spothouse production company
and the BBC. The film director and musician Gandulf Hennig is working to
complete this project in the Fall of this year on location exactly where the
events took place. This fusion of interviews with Gram Parsons' contemporaries
and those who followed in his footsteps combined with rare footage of his
performances is overseen by the American music journalist and GP-biographer Sid
Griffin. In this film, friends and colleagues of Gram Parsons as well as today's
music stars have their chance to speak. http://www.americana-uk.com/html/news.html

Who plays steel guitar on SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO ? Llyod Green tells it all : Lifted
from the Steel Guitar Forum: "Unfortunately,
the steel players, J. D. Maness and myself, were never identified by song on the
previous two "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" releases. Yet a third one will
shortly be out on Sony in a double CD, with all the additional takes on each
song, some as many as 15 or more! I
recently did an interview with David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine, who is
overseeing the historical info of this project. During the interview, I
furnished him with many corrections that were/are historically wrong. He has
promised to correct the record. I won't explain them here, except to once and
for all, tell you folks who played steel on each song in that seminal album.
Here goes. You
Ain't Going Nowhere - Lloyd Green We
both wrote this song, although 3 different writers are given credit erroneously
on different albums. For
the full corrections, read the Rolling Stone story when it is published or buy
the newest version of the CD on Sony due out this Fall. Thank you, Lloyd Green" Byrds Flyght comment : Thanks
Lloyd, this was a question often asked by Byrds
fans. But Kevin Kelley also
claimed to have written "All I Have

writer credit he had on Byrds

the Byrds Flyght comment : What Next ?
Hitherto unknown SKIP BATTIN studio sessions participations unearthed and released REV-OLA records in the U.K. have just released Richard and Thomas Frost's previously unreleased album "VISUALIZE". Skip Battin plays on several tracks.
"For these fantastic 1969 recordings, the duo was backed by Kim Fowley's usual Imperial session gang — including Skip Battin (ex-Skip & Flip, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage) and Steppenwolf guitarist Mars Bonfire — along with the cream of the crop of L.A.'s "Wrecking Crew" session players, including Barney Kessel, Larry Knechtel, and legendary drummer Hal Blaine (Allen Breneman also contributes drums)" You can read details and order the CD by visiting: http://www.cherryred.co.uk/other/revola_main/artists/thomasrichardfrostcrrev4.htm

Dan Fogelberg's new album is titled Full Circle, after the Gene Clark song. The CD includes Dan's version of the song.
Lifted from the Gene Clark Internet Forums (sent by Saul Davis) : So Rebellious A Lover by Gene Clark & Carla Olson will be reissued by Fuel2000 Records (MCA Universal) in September 2003 with a number of "orphan" bonus tracks including the officially unreleased Gene Clark song Winning Hand as well as and Broken Hearts & Broken Dreams, Day For Night, Jokers Are Wild, Lover's Turnaround, and Changes. BYRDS FLYGHT comments: Except for WINNING HAND (which widely circulates on unofficial CDs), all the bonus tracks have already been officially released. Except for Broken Heart a Broken Dreams (from Carla's first solo album), they're all tracks recorded with the Textones. Another such song, called WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME TODAY, still remains officially unreleased. Unfortunately, it seems that the main concern of those holding the rights to these songs, is to make us buy the same things again and again, instead of making other unreleased songs available to the people most likely to buy them: us, the fans! Where are the promised MOUNTAIN STAGE and UNDER THE SILVERY MOON CDs ?

COUNTING CROWS cover GRAM PARSONS The new release by the Counting Crows (due on Monday June 9th) is a 2 CD release containing previously unreleased live & studio bonus tracks. One of these tracks is a studio cover of Gram Parsons' Return Of the Grievous Angel.
Gene Clark's "Feeling Higher" is covered by OSEEO on their newly released CD "Perilous Rescue"
The CD features "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow on steel guitar. Pete certainly shines on the track "You've Got That Look In Your Eyes" which was co-written by Forrest Rosaire and Lonnie DeAraujo, who recorded with Jim Dickson and Chris Hillman back in the mid 1980's.
The band's website is at www.oseeomusic.com
