Each time we think we've got them all...and then a thing such as this one comes to the surface...

Chris Hillman (along with Al Perkins, Bill Bryson, Steve Hill, Dan McCorison and more...) plays Mandolin and High Strung Guitar on a LP from 1984, by a singer called Daniel McClenaghan.

The LP is called WINNING THE WEST and was completely unknown to even the most dedicated Chris Hillman fans worldwide...

Another "Your Read It Here First" Byrds Flyght exclusive...

Daniel McClenaghan wrote all the songs.

The album is "Country Gospel", very similar in style (and with the same musicians) to both the Down Home Praise and Ever Call Ready albums.

NEW FROM SIERRA RECORDS!

Advance orders are now being accepted and most welcomed for Sierra Records' newest release "Clarence White: White Lightnin' (SXCD 6030), a collection of rare, mostly unreleased studio and live recordings available for the first time, on compact disc!

Shipping on October 21, 2008, exclusively to Sierra Mail Order customers only, this new release focuses on Clarence electric guitar work though it will contain some bluegrass guitar moments as well.

The highlights include: Clarence's first commercial, major label appearance on the now classic album, "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass-Weissberg & Brickman" which is currently available as "Deliverance-Soundtrack" (CD 465) but always missing the one instrumental, "No Title Yet Blues", whether on LP or CD,  featuring Clarence's brilliant lead and rhythm guitar, this track is now heard for the first time on CD.

Recorded live in 1967 at the Nashville West Club in El Monte CA, you will hear Clarence's other country band, a band few, if any, ever heard, let alone saw, "THE ROUSTABOUTS",  performing "Buckaroo", "Tango For A Sad Mood" and "Tuff and Stringy" followed by a never before release studio recording of another version of "Tuff and Stringy", all featuring Clarence on electric guitar and a full country band with pedal steel, piano, drums, bass.

From the Byrds era, more rare, unreleased studio tracks including a killer string bender instrumental, "Around the Barn", acoustic version of "Yesterday's Train" and a tune we are calling, "Sally (Goodin) meets the Byrds" and the out of print but now restored instrumental recording, "White's Lightning". Interspersed with these and other rare tracks on this CD is Clarence and his string bending Telecaster ripping off guitar licks as part of his home made practice/instruction tapes.

And finally, to make this an even "more special then it already is" offer, the first 500 orders received now for this advance CD release, will also receive a special limited edition, mini-two song DVD (playable in all regions) of Clarence performing live on stage and in color, "Truck Stop Girl" and "Take A Whiff On Me"! This mini DVD will not be available commercially and they WILL go fast. The advance pre-release price including the mini DVD to the first 500 who order is only $13.98 plus shipping and handling ($2.00 USA, $5.00 outside the USA ). This special pre-release price is good until October 21, 2008.  After that the price will be $18.98 without the DVD plus shipping and handling. (California residents only pay curent state sales tax). The commercial release of "Clarence White: White Lightnin' (Sierra SXCD 6030)" will not be until January 2009.

Earl Palmer passed away on Friday, September 19, 2008 at the age of 84.

One of the world's best known session drummer, he played on thousands of records, by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Little Richard, The Righteous Brothers, Ike And Tina Turner, Neil Young, The Monkees and Fats Domino among many others.

It was Earl Palmer who played drums in the studio with the early incarnation of the 3-piece Byrds (Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and David Crosby) as The Beefeaters. He also plays on Gene Clark's "With The Gosdin Brothers" album.

New Crosby, Stills and Nash album planned

From Billboard:

Crosby, Stills & Nash are plotting their first studio album since 1994 -- a covers set for Columbia Records helmed by Rick Rubin.

"Rick Rubin's a brilliant man",
Graham Nash tells Billboard, "and what he wants is an album with no CSN songs. He wants to do an album of all the songs we love, all the songs we wish we've written. It's brilliant from this point of view because we usually wait five years to record an album. This way there's no pressure."

Nash says he,
David Crosby and Stephen Stills have had "many discussions" with Rubin about the project, whittling the proposed list of songs from 60 down to a current 20, which the trio is rehearsing after sound checks during its summer tour. Nash declines to name specific songs but acknowledges most would be considered well-known.

He expects recording to start in early 2009 for a release later in the year. The covers set will be CSN's first new release since 1994's "After the Storm"

From backstreets.com:

Magic Tour Highlights, an EP by Bruce Springsteen, available on July 15, 2008, embraces the digital era, delivering mp3s and videos online with no physical release currently planned. The EP will be available for download from all digital downloads stores, including the iTunes Store and Amazon.com.

Four songs from Bruce and the E Street Band's spring 2008 U.S. leg have been selected, each highlighting a special guest -- if you count Danny Federici's re-emergence for his only 2008 appearance, what turned out to be his final performance in Indianapolis. A "guest spot" or not, it was an emotional high point of the tour that's captured here, along with three other unique performance highs.

The tracks:

"Always a Friend" with Alejandro Escovedo (April 14, Houston)

"The Ghost of Tom Joad" with Tom Morello (April 7, Anaheim)

"Turn! Turn! Turn!" with Roger McGuinn (April 23, Orlando)

"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" with Danny Federici (March 20, Indianapolis)

In addition to the audio tracks, each of these will be available in accompanying live videos.

We just had the opportunity to listen to The Everly Brothers' 8 CDs box set called "Chained To A Memory 1966-1972".

We found out that this box set contains two previously  unreleased versions of  'I'm On My Way Back Home', as well as the previously released versions of this song and of "Cuckoo Bird", on which The Everlys are backed by Clarence White and Gene Parsons.

Some sources say Clarence White is also on both versions of From Eden To Canaan.

From GROWING BOLDER:

Historic Rock and Roll Home Movie Rediscovered

Orlando, Fla. (June 8, 2008) After spending nearly 40 years in a drawer in Roger McGuinn’s home, a movie that Paul McCartney described as “brilliant” has found its way to the Internet on www.GrowingBolder.com.

In 1965, The Byrds' Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, and David Crosby wrote the song that created psychedelic rock, Eight Miles High, about their plane trip to England. Two years later, The Byrds returned to London and McGuinn took along his movie camera to capture the story behind the song.  Editing inside the camera, McGuinn created a one-take short film and added Eight Miles High as the soundtrack.

“I had seen an experimental film by a guy named Bruce Conner whose style was to go click, click, click, and then run a few seconds of film,” McGuinn tells Growing Bolder.  “The end result is really fast, jumpy images that I thought would be interesting with Eight Miles High.”

The entire film, along with McGuinn’s introduction and description, can be seen at www.growingbolder.com/media/Entertainment/Music/Historic-Home-Movie-152484.html

“The film is a piece of rock history,” says Growing Bolder executive producer Katy Widrick. “We’re excited to help keep it alive.“

9 Girl To Be On My Mind
10 Wall Song
11 Immigration Man
12 To Know Yuh
13 Call Of The Wreckin' Ball
14 Year 1
15 Johnny Hit And Run Pauline

UPDATE 06/05/2008:

Here's what Byrds Flyght visitor John Ward from the U.K. wrote to us:

I'm just wondering whether the information about the newly announced bonus tracks is strictly accurate. 'Johnny Hit and Run Pauline' was originally by the punk group, X. Similarly, 'Call of the Wreckin Ball' was by new wave outfit, The Knitters. Both Amazon.com and CDUniverse.com have listed the forthcoming Rhino release as being without bonus tracks. If I'm wrong about this then we are certainly going to be in for an interesting missing chapter in Crosby's musical development!

UPDATE 06/24/2008:

DEFINITELY NO BONUS TRACKS ON THIS RE-RELEASE

Gene Clark on The Flying Burrito Brothers' version of Tried So Hard : the end of a myth.

We just received the following article from Jean-Pierre Morisset :

As far back as january 1975, in my very first article on Gene Clark published in ZigZag issue # 49, I wrote: 'Gene played a few gigs with The Flying Burrito Bros who had just lost Gram Parsons during the summer (1970), and at one point it was believed that Clark was going to become a permanent member of the group. But of course he didn't; the only result of this short-lived alliance was the Burritos' recording of Clark's "Tried So Hard" as their next single, with Gene singing the bass part of the back-up vocals ...'

Years later, in issue # 39/40 of Bucketfull Of Brains dated march 1992, I even added: '... in a version different from the one that was later used on the Burritos' third album where Gene's voice was replaced by Rick Roberts.'

Owning the rare A&M single "Tried So Hard" and having listened to it very carefully with headphones, I was sure to have identified a bass vocal which in my mind could only be Gene's voice, following his involvment with the Burritos' GP-less quartet during the summer of 1970. But unfortunately it's not the case !

After almost thirty eight years of belief, I finally asked Chris Hillman to confirm Gene's presence on that single. And here's what Chris wrote me: 'Gene was not on the Burritos' recording of "Tried So Hard": he didn't sing any harmonies on the song. In fact, as good of a lead singer as Gene was, he couldn't sing parts or alternate harmonies. Gene sang lead on "Here Tonight" by the Burritos, which was released later on a compilation album.'

Returning to my archives after this historical point was cleared by Hillman, I finally found out that Rick Roberts had joined the FBB not in september after the recording session for the single, but in august, in time for the recording of the song, which was rush-released in october 1970, before a tour of Europe by The Flying Burrito Bros' new five-men line-up. Why his high voice can't be heard on the recording is unclear: maybe producer Jim Dickson purposedly choose not to mix Rick's harmonies upfront, as he was not familiar with the newcomer's voice. Anyway, another take the song was used on the Burritos' third LP released in may 1971, with Rick's high voice more prominent: had Jim Dickson in between realized the potential of such a harmony singer ? Maybe.

Roger McGuinn completists, you can start scratching your head!

Roger just confirmed in an e-mail to Byrds Flyght that he played 12 string guitar on a 1963 recording by Tom And Jerry, who would later find fame and fortune as Simon And Garfunkel.

Problem is, which track is it, among the numerous songs they recorded as Tom And Jerry???

Any help appreciated!

Originally named The Sundowners and then The Epics, the band changed their name to Mudcrutch around 1970. When the band split up, Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers cohorts Mike Campbell and Benmont Trench achieved worldwide success. Now they’ve reunited with guitarist Tom Leadon and drummer Randall Marsh and will release their self-titled debut album on April 28th on Reprise.

“I made a commitment at the beginning of this project that I wanted it to be Mudcrutch done as it was back in the day. I really wanted it to be that band,” explained Petty. “ But why now? ”I guess I started thinking that we left some music back there, and it was time to go and get it.”

Petty’s idea of reuniting the band soon came to fruition. Tom Leadon, the brother of Bernie Leadon (previously of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Eagles), had spent several years giving guitar lesson while Randall Marsh had been playing in local bands.

The album was subsequently recorded live with no overdubs in a recording studio built in The Heartbreakers’ rehearsal space. The result is a pure, energetic collection that highlights selected covers (David Dudley’sSix Days on the Road’, The Byrds Lover of the Bayou’, bluegrass staple ‘Shady Grove’) with strong originals from Petty, Campbell, Leadon and Tench. ‘Mudcrutch’ is an album that stands out due to the powerfully natural vocals harmonies of Petty and Leadon, as well as Leadon and Campbell’s complimentary guitar work.

Notable original compositions include the infectious groove of ‘Topanga Cowgirl’, Tench’sThis is a Good Street’ and the energetic Campbell/Petty rocker ‘Bootleg Flyer’.

The Flying Burrito Brothers, the band's third album, and The Last Of The Red Hot Burritos, the live (fourth) album by the band, are planned to be re-released on CD by Raven Records in Australia with bonus tracks.

From Raven's website:

Flying Burrito Bros/Last of the Red Hot Burritos (2-for-1) (RVCD-271)

For the first time on one CD, Raven offers two classic country rock/bluegrass albums by the legendary FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS. The Flying Burrito Bros album (1971) is acknowledged as a prime example of country rock, and most significantly the great lost Burritos live album Last of the Red Hot Burritos (1972) has been made available on CD. These albums are the last two that ex-Byrd and Burritos co-founder Chris Hillman produced with the band. The Burritos were among the originators of country rock and when Gram Parsons left in 1970, singer songwriter Rick Roberts joined. His contribution to The Flying Burrito Bros is immense, including such memorable performances as ‘Colorado’ and excellent covers of Merle Haggard’s ‘White Line Fever’ and Dylan’s ‘To Ramona’.

For Last of the Red Hot Burritos the band added a significant bluegrass component as displayed on blazing versions of ‘Orange Blossom Special’ and ‘Dixie Breakdown’. In addition there are four Parsons-era classics (‘Devil in Disguise’, ‘My Uncle’, ‘High Fashion Queen’, ‘Hot Burrito #2’) and rocked up country and soul covers (‘Six Days on the Road’, ‘Don’t Fight It’, ‘Losing Game’) which only add to the album’s appeal. This top value 2-for-1 CD includes two rare Bonus Tracks: ‘Here Tonight’ with ex-Byrd Gene Clark plus the original 45-RPM version of ‘Tried so Hard’, also featuring Clark, which has likewise never been issued on CD before. Features colour booklet, informative liner notes and superb quality audio.

Sneaky Pete Kleinow Anthology CD released by Sundazed: The Shiloh Recordings

From Sundazed website:

Sneaky Pete Kleinow
The Shiloh Records Anthology
CD: SC 11179

Sneaky Pete Kleinow was best known as a mind-altering pedal steel guitarist, and an integral part of the sound of Gram Parsons’ original Flying Burrito Bros. Every rock fan worth his salt knows Sneaky as the brilliant steel player zigzagging his way across The Gilded Palace of Sin, the Burritos’ stunning 1969 debut, and as the band member on the album cover decked out in an all-black Nudie suit with a golden pterodactyl on the chest, where Superman’s red "S" would have been. And that was Sneaky, to a T: super-hero steel guitarist to no less than the Rolling Stones, Booker T. & the MG’s, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Doug Sahm, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Randy Newman, Little Richard, Frank Zappa, Leonard Cohen and John Lennon — among countless others. Here’s a brilliant taste of the pedal steel guitar genius of Sneaky Pete Kleinow. Long may he wave.

1. Beat the Heat
2. Hickory Wind
3. Sister
4. Oklahoma Stomp
5. From Me to You
6. Sleepy Lagoon
7. Silverbird

Rare JOHN YORK concert

Redneck ninja: John York & Patrick Brayer

Saturday October 20th 2007 / 8PM $15
The Claremont Forum,
586 W. First Street, Claremont, CA 91711
(in the Packing House)     Interstate 10 / North on Indian Hill Blvd. / west of First Street

The Redneck Ninja duet concerts between John York and Patrick Brayer are rare and far and few between.  Their work, to this day, continues to tentacle out from the Inland Empire into the greater world at large, but the concerts that they perform ultimately come down to what they both have in common, a realization that success is at most an amusement, and at its least a distraction, and that only the act of sharing is paramount to breathing itself.

We here at Byrds Flyght have just received the brand new double DVD called THE BYRDS - UNDER REVIEW - A DOCUMENTARY FILM

With 3 hours and 13 minutes dedicated to The Byrds, it allows some people who were involved with the Byrds (including ex-members John York and Gene Parsons) to express their points of view for the first time on such a release.

Five minutes into watching, and already incredible exerpts from live performances by The New Christy Minstrels with Gene Clark!

We've spent the last 3 and a half hours viewing these DVDs, and there's no other thing like that for true Byrds fans. It goes deep into details of all eras of the band's career.

Recommended!!!

The Byrds Under Review is a documentary film, which explores in detail the music, career and background of arguably America’s most influential band.

Inventors of folk-rock and country-rock, and with a sizeable investment in what became garage-rock (and ultimately Punk), The Byrds could barely write a song without creating a new genre.

With the aid of many who were there at the time, as either part of the group or close at hand, this 2 DVD set is a celebration of one of Rock N’ Roll’s truly great bands.

Features Include:

Rare and classic performances re-assessed by our panel of experts

Footage and interviews from then and now

Exclusive and extensive contributions from Byrds members John York and Gene Parsons, plus further enlightenment from collaborators such as producer and arrange Van Dyke Parks, LA scenester and Wrecking Crew guitarist Jerry Cole, fiddle player Byron Berline and country guitarist Vern Gosdin

Opinion, review and critique from:

The Byrds esteemed biographer Johnny Rogan; ex-Rolling Stone editor Anthony DeCurtis; legendary music historian and author of Eight Miles High: Folk-Rock’s Flight from Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock, Richie Unterberger and British music journalist and author Nigel Williamson

Seldom seen footage of pre-Byrds collectives

Live and studio recordings of Byrds classics such as ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’,‘I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better’, ‘Eight Miles High’, ‘Mr Spaceman’, ‘So You Want To Be A Rock N’ Roll Star’, ‘Hickory Wind’, ‘Chestnut Mare’ and many others

Extra Features Include Gene Parsons demonstrates his ‘StringBender’ – the guitar effect he invented for Byrd Clarence White

Jerry Cole recalls – tales of Phil Spector, Charles Manson and other LA notables

The Flying Burrito Brothers Live At The Avalon double CD set for release on October 30th, 2007.

The song "Long Black Limousine" can already be downloaded from the web site at http://www.amoeba.com/content/gram-press.html

From the Amoeba Label website:

TWO-CD, HIGH FIDELITY LIVE SET

‘GRAM PARSONS ARCHIVES VOL. 1: THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS “LIVE” AT THE AVALON 1969’

OUT OCTOBER 30th ON AMOEBA RECORDS.

MATERIAL FROM 1969 FOUND IN GRATEFUL DEAD VAULTS; FEATURES TEN SONGS NEVER RECORDED BY PARSONS AND NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE

Amoeba Records will release a major addition to Gram Parsons' discography with ‘Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers “Live” at the Avalon 1969’, due October 30th from the newly formed label. The two CD, 27-track set includes a number of never-before-heard -- though long rumored -- rarities.

Gram Parsons, leading the Flying Burrito Brothers, opened for the Grateful Dead April 4, 5 and 6, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The April 4th show has never been heard in any form. The bonus disc is the April 6th show. For years these tapes were rumored to exist and were finally unearthed in the Grateful Dead vault. The shows were recorded by the legendary sound engineer Bear (Owsley Stanley), and are the highest quality Gram Parsons live material available.

Amoeba Records, started by the owners of the revered independent record store of the same name, is launching with the August 28 release of smoky-voiced singer and songwriter Brandi Shearer’s ‘Close to Dark.’ The album is co-produced by Larry Klein, known for his work with Joni Mitchell and Madeleine Peyroux, among others.

Rarities on ‘Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers “Live” at the Avalon 1969’ include Gram’s unique choice of mainly country standards, which are not on any other official Gram Parsons recording:

From Collector's Choice website:

After he left the Byrds, Gene Clark’s solo career had its ups and downs on record, but right to the very end he was performing for audiences transfixed by the power of his songwriting and by the passion of the man. With this 'Collectors’ Choice Music' exclusive, we bring you a mixture of rare and unreleased live material, much of it with his performing partner of the ’80s, ex-Textones leader Carla Olson. The first disc features a *completely unreleased* solo performance taped for the Mountain Stage radio show in West Virginia from 1988; songs include 'Silver Raven; Tried So Hard; My Marie; Rodeo Rider; Gypsy Rider; Train Leaves Here This Morning', and 'Hear the Wind'. To that performance we’ve added three rare tracks that only appeared previously on Rhino’s 1987 version of the Gene Clark & Carla Olson studio album, 'So Rebellious a Lover'; recorded in Gene’s living room in 1989, the songs are 'Number One Is to Survive; Mary Sue', and 'Del Gato'. And disc two squeezes the entire double-album (minus some between-song chatter) of Gene and Carla’s 1990 performance at McCabe’s Guitar Shop that only saw an overseas release as 'Silhouetted in Light'; songs include 'Your Fire Burning; Number One Is to Survive; Love Wins Again; Fair & Tender Ladies; Photograph; Set You Free This Time; Last Thing on My Mind; Gypsy Rider; Train Leaves Here This Morning; Almost Saturday Night; Del Gato; I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better; She Don’t Care About Time; Speed of the Sound of Loneliness; Will the Circle Be Unbroken', and 'Here Without You'. One of the great songwriters of our time.

For those living in the U.K.:

Tomorrow evening (Monday 8 January), BBC 4 (a digital TV channel) will be screening at 9pm GMT an hour long documentary entitled "Hotel California: from the Byrds to the Eagles".

It is described as "a celebration of the music of California in the 1960s and 1970s". It really does look promising.

08/22/06

Singer-songwriter Robert Wiersma from the Netherlands (influenced by The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers)

has CD out called TIMES ON HOLD.

You can read more info, order the CD or download some songs for free from http://www.robertwiersma.com/

From the Americana UK site

"Lay Down Your Weary Tune

From the Netherlands, Wiersma has his eyes and ears firmly set on that melancholy singer/songwriter genre, perhaps best exemplified by Gene Clark on the “White Light “ album. With only guitar and vocals on show this isn’t by any means a bad attempt. He sings well and the guitars ripple and swell creating a sound best listened to in a late night fugue. However, and despite some strong lyrical pieces, there is little here that would stick around in the memory the morning after. Songwriters like Clark could weave pop songs from a bare thread, after a while these songs tend to coalesce into one with no standout.

There are some songs that, after closer inspection, bear repeating. An Old Getaway has its finger fully on the pulse of classic American songwriting with echoes of Townes Van Zandt or Guy Clark. On Hold has a wonderful chiming guitar sound approaching that of the Byrds referencing Bach. More of this and the album could have been a contender.

Perhaps a slow burner, but definitely some potential here for future development"

DELAYED!

The often bootlegged Flying Burrito Brothers concert at The Avalon, San Francisco on 4/6/1969, which was planned to be

released on CD this month on the Amoeba label, has apparently been delayed.

from Byrds Flyght's Guest Book:

"I'm told that Amoeba Music is delaying the release of its Flying Burrito Brothers CD, recorded live at the Avalon in San Francisco in 1969, until January 2007. It was supposed to come out this month. The good news is that the CD will have a distributor and be available at places other than Amoeba's stores (which are good places but exist only in Northern and Southern California)."

The lineup was Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Michael Clarke, Chris Ethridge and Sneaky Pete Kleinow.

More info when available.

GRAM PARSONS biography (co-written by his daughter Polly) to be published

From the Amazon website:

"There has never been a better time for a book on Gram Parsons. At the thirty-year anniversary of his death, his sound, a mix of country and rock 'n' roll, is absolutely everywhere. Popular musicians of today trace their inspiration to pick up a guitar to when they first heard his music. His songs and his style have had a lasting effect on the music of our time.

Now, together with Parsons's daughter, Polly, Jessica Hundley has created an intimate and extensive biography that brings together never-before-seen photos and illustrations, unpublished letters, and in-depth interviews with some of the many artists whose work was shaped by Parsons, including Keith Richards, Emmylou Harris, Wilco, and Ryan Adams, among many others.

Grievous Angel is the tribute that the legions of Parsons fans have been waiting for—a book that brings to life the story of the Southern boy who revolutionized the way music sounds."

Gene Clark fans, beware ! ...or don't miss this opportunity !

The famous "lost" Gene Clark / CRY recordings from the 80s have surfaced again in Europe, this time on a CD titled

EIGHT MILES HIGH - THE GREATEST HITS OF THE BYRDS

MR TAMBOURINE MAN, ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO , TURN TURN TURN and EIGHT MILES HIGH

are done by a group of "fake" Byrds (not the Byrds)

The real gems on this CD are the other songs, which are studio quality songs written and performed by GENE CLARK

and/or co-author PAT ROBINSON.

Another chapter in the never-ending story of these recordings.

From John York's website at http://home.earthlink.net/~sumjo/id5.html

"John York is currently working on a new CD tentatively titled "Arigatou Baby" after his recent concerts in Japan.
New songs, new guitars, with upright and fretless electric bass...a departure from John York's fascination with
instruments from other cultures on "Koto" and "Claremont Dragon."
True to form...a "Rock Regend."

John York has been playing upright bass, ukelele, and contributing vocals on "ISLAND GIRL", a new CD project with
Chris Darrow and Chester Krill (Max Buda) of Kaleidoscope fame."

The Kennedys new CD will feature songs written by various ex-Byrds:

From the Kennedys newsletter:

"Kennedys' next CD, "Songs of the Open Road" due October 3!

Our next CD, "Songs of the Open Road," is now in the final stages of production, and will be in stores October 3rd. We'll likely have copies to sell at shows sometime this summer. The disc is a collection of our favorite songs by other writers, and songs that we always listen to when we travel the highways and byways of America. It's our favorite road music, and so we recorded our own versions! "Songs of the Open Road" will be our second release on the very groovy Appleseed Recordings label. Songwriters represented on this disc include Victoria Williams, Jimmy Webb, Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Dave Carter, Nick Lowe, Bob Dylan, John Stewart, Bob Neuwirth, Mahalia Jackson and Nanci Griffith. We recorded many more songs than we can fit on this disc, so we imagine there will someday be a volume two! "

Gene Parsons is scheduled to perform at a couple of North Coast California music festivals this July and August.

5/28/06  UPDATED WITH PICTURE

Rhino Records will released a GRAM PARSONS 3 CD Box Set on June 20, 2006

From the Rhino website:

"Produced by Emmylou Harris and Rhino's James Austin, the three-CD set is a comprehensive collection of Parsons' legendary recordings for Reprise. Disc one presents his 1973 solo debut, GP, plus seven bonus tracks, including a rare 1973 promo interview. Disc two presents 1974's posthumously released Grievous Angel, along with three bonus tracks, including another revealing interview. Disc three contains seven previously unissued alternate takes from the GP sessions and eight from the Grievous Angel sessions, plus three more solo outtakes released only on A&M's 1976 compilation Sleepless Nights."

Rhino's COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS includes Remastered and Expanded Versions of Gram Parsons' Solo Albums
Plus 16 Unreleased Tracks

LOS ANGELES - The echo of Gram Parsons' cosmic American music still rings in the sound of today's alternative country just as his trailblazing work as a musician without boundaries continues to inspire all recording artists. And although books, tribute albums and movies have brought more recognition to Parsons' proto-country-rock sound since his tragic death in 1973, fans have seen tantalizingly few unreleased songs emerge from the vaults to burnish Parson's short but influential legacy.

Thanks to a recently uncovered cache of master tapes, Rhino is able to add another chapter to Parsons' musical legend with GRAM PARSONS: COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS, a three-CD set featuring 16 previously unreleased outtakes from the GP and Grievous Angel sessions, as well as three hard-to-find tracks. Coproduced by Emmylou Harris, the three-disc CD set is available from Rhino June 20 at regular retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $34.98.

The first two discs of COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS contain remastered versions of Parsons' two classic solo albums expanded with rare Parsons interviews and bonus tracks that feature Parsons and Emmylou Harris performing "Love Hurts" and "Sin City" live in the WBCN radio studio, as well as a stunning instrumental version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" that spotlights the improvisation skills of pianist Glen D Hardin and guitarist James Burton, who played on both of Parsons' solo albums.

The final disc contains 15 alternate versions of influential tracks from GP and Grievous Angel. Stellar versions in their own right, the tracks feature Parsons and his tightly-knit band working through stripped-down, semi-acoustic arrangements of "She," "Streets of Baltimore," "Ooh Las Vegas," "Love Hurts," and a complete version of "Hickory Wind" minus the overdubbed crowd noise found on the album version. The disc closes with a trio of covers, including two Boudleaux Bryant songs made famous by The Everly Brothers ("Brand New Heartache" and "Sleepless Nights") and The Louvin Brothers'
"The Angels Rejoiced Last Night."

The deluxe packaging for the CD set consists of a "clamshell" box holding three "mini albums" and a 52-page booklet that includes lyrics, many previously unseen photos, an introduction by Emmylou Harris, and liner note essays by Holly George-Warren and Parke Puterbaugh.

EDDIE TICKNER DIES

From John Delgatto (Sierra Records):

It is with great sadness and a deep lose that I report that Eddie Tickner passed away today in Tucson, AZ due to complications from leukemia.  He began his career as a manager/accountant for Odetta in the 50s.  Eddie and his partner Jim Dickson were the original managers/producers/music publishers of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros. Later they would guide the careers in the same role for the Country Gazette, Clarence White and of course Gram Parsons. Finally, it was Eddie who secured a record deal for Emmylou Harris after Gram's death and he managed her career through the 80s.

Eddie was, simply put, a great man, "wise and kind with age".  I know from first hand experience that both Clarence and Gram thought the world of Eddie.  They chose him to guide their solo careers, careers however to be cut short in 1973.

Please remember Eddie  for his widow, Dolores.

John Delgatto, Sierra Records

Byrds Flyght note:

Eddie Tickner was married to Delores (nee Ianthe) McGuinn, and so was stepdad to Roger McGuinn's sons, Patrick and Henry.

"I met Sally Spring about thirty years ago while touring through the South. I was taken by her wonderful voice, her gentle and soulful approach to song, her guitar and I was taken particularly with Sally as a person. Her vocal phrasing is unique and pleasing with a voice so rich and full that there is always more to discover as you listen over and over. She was fantastic thirty years ago but now she has even more depth and maturity in her performance. She is a treasure."

Roger McGuinn's Folk Den Project 4 CDs Box Set now released:

"In November of 1995 I began a project for the preservation of the music I love, Folk Music. Each month I would record a song, print the lyrics and chords, add a personal note and put it on my web site, mcguinn.com. I wanted everyone to have the opportunity to learn the songs and to be able to sing them with their families and friends, so downloads were offered free of charge. The original recordings were 11 KHz 8-bit . monophonic WAV files, far below CD quality. I have re-recorded those songs in 24-bit 44.1 KHz Stereo. To commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the FOLK DEN, this compilation contains 100 of my favorite songs from the project with many of the original notes. Email preorder-fd@aprilfirstproductions.com to be notified of the availability of the Folk Den Project 4 CD Set"

A DAVID CROSBY 3 CDs Box Set (a career retrospective) is planned for released in January 2006.

Some interesting rumours on www.4waysite.com (the CSN&Y web site): September 1 :

'Crosby box is nearly done' "The Crosby 3CD box is nearly done with 55 tracks to be released on January 6 or, if Neil Young gets involved, July 6. Graham Nash: "...quite a brilliant representation of David's musical path." "Also in the pipeline, two re-releases with bonus tacks: "Crosby Stills Nash" (1969's "Couch Album") and "Daylight Again""

Thanks to SPIN viewer Paul for confirming the above and adding the following from the Graham Nash site:

"Me and Joel and Stanley Johnston have just completed the re-mastering of the first CSN album (with 4 extra tracks....me and David's demo of 'Teach Your Children'... 'Do For The Others' with me and Stephen... 'Everybody's Talkin'..and a great take of 'Song With No  Words'...Then we re-mastered and added 4 songs to the 'Daylight Again' album..'Tomorrow Is Another Day' by Stephen... 'Feel Your Love' by Stephen and I... A  brilliant performance of 'Might As Well Have A Good Time' with Craig Doerge on piano and Crosby doing the vocals....and finally 'Raise A Voice'.. by Stephen and I... I believe they're coming out in January of '06"

Byrds percussionist and long time roadie JIMMI SEITER writes to BYRDS FLYGHT for all Byrds and

Byrds & Burrito Bros. Fans:

As a true Byrds / FBB Fan, you might already know who I am. I was that other guy that you might have seen filling in on TV shows or playing percussion on stage or making sure that all was ready on stage before a show. Possibly even in an interview or whatever.

My name is Jimmi Seiter and I was the Road manager, Manager, Equipment manager, Baby Sitter, Percussionist, Tour manager, Peace Maker pretty much all of the above and everything else to the Byrds for most of their live performance career. I joined the band just as they were beginning to play concerts and left for a brief time to join the Flying Burrito Brothers at Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke's request as Manager and all of the above, then back to the Byrds until very near the end of their touring days.

I have many photos from those days that have never been seen and some that have been used without my permission in many books etc. The photos are from the many Byrds groups as well as the original FBB band and Gram Parsons. Many of these photos are available from my Ebay Store Dukiewoods.

If you have any interest in purchasing any of this Rock & Roll memorabilia or whatever, feel free to respond. If not still continue to enjoy the music as I was a part of most of it and there was a lot of love put into those tracks.

Thanks for your time,

Jimmi Seiter

Also quite by accident, my son Ashley has a site www.seischo.com where he has some really nice T-Shirts that he sells. He has access to all of my photos to use for his shirts so please feel free to check out his site. We do custom orders for shirts as well.

Alan Rockman writes:

If you missed McCabes, you missed a truly wonderful show. The "boys" were top-notch as usual and joining them was their long-time associate, Larry Park. Larry played lead guitar on "Bakersfield Bound", "Way Out West" and "The Other Side" and it was fascinating to see how he mastered the licks Clarence White originally played on "Time Between" and Gene Clark's "Tried So Hard" as well as the Byrds, Burritos, DRB, Manassas tunes.

The next major California concert date for Chris and Herb:

I am pleased to let you know that Chris and Herb, and Jackson Browne will be headlining the Avila Beach Music Festival in Avila Beach, California on Saturday, October 29, 2005. The concert will benefit S.M.I.L.E.\Options, an organization that many of you might know is very close to both Chris and Herb's hearts.

Details of the shows and ticket information can be found on the festival website: www.avilabeachmusicfestival.org

You can also e-mail the festival promoter, Dan Kitchen or call (805) 878-2691 for additional information.

It will be an day of great music in a beautiful setting - if anyone is familiar with the Central California coast you will know exactly what I mean, and will benefit a truly wonderful cause.

Best,

Alan

The next issue of Mojo Magazine will feature a "Bob Dylan 100 best songs" list as chosen by major artists.

Free with the issue, comes a CD of Bob Dylan covers, including a newly recorded acoustic version of Up to Me

by Roger McGuinn and the Flying Burrito Brothers' version of To Ramona from their third album.

7/26/05

From the August Issue of ICE:

In line for deluxe audio treatment is The Byrds' debut, Mr. Tambourine Man. On September 6, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab issues the 1965 set as an Ultradisc SACD, working from the mono masters of the original LP. As a bonus, the new edition uses Bob Irwin and Vic Anesini's stereo remixes of the alternates and outtakes featured on Sundazed's earlier reissue of the album ("All I Really Want to Do", "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better", "It's No Use", "She Has a Way", "You and Me" and "You Won't Have to Cry")

Look out for a movie called "Head in the Clouds". It takes place in Paris in the 30's and the jazz "Quintet of the Hot Club

of France" is featured in one of the scenes.

Playing the part of guitar legend Django Reinhardt is no other than the Desert Rose Band's JOHN JORGENSEN.

Chris Hillman's song MISSING YOU from his latest CD "The Other Side" appears on a Various Artists compilation CD

called SONGS FOR SOPHIE: A COLLING COLLECTIVE.

It is a special recording project whereby some of the most talented musicians in acoustic music have volunteered

their time and talent to help a girl who has a rare disease.

New GENE CLARK recording to be released in March 2005

From Thomas Aubrunner's Gib Guilbeau Pages:

"Musicians Anonymous" are working on a new CD!

On the CD, that will be coming out in about 5 month (Feb./March 2005), the musicians are Gib Guilbeau, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Chris Ethridge, Bobby Cochran, Bob Warford (all ex-Flying Burrito Brothers), Shannon O'Neill, Spooner Oldham, John Molo, Hyland Church, Ronnie Guilbeau and probably a few others. On the CD there will be a song sung by Gene Clark and all of the band playing on it!"

Byrds Flyght has learned that the song will be ALL I WANT (the first available version was on "This Byrd Has Flown").

It will be another version with a different Gene Clark vocal, added to a newly recorded backing track by the above mentioned musicians.

BUT...

Gene Clark's estate vetoes the release of this song....

lifted from the Gene Clark Internet Forums:

"An open letter: Simply because someone owns a piece of tape with someone's voice on it does not give the person the legal let alone ethical right to make it commercially available.

There are obviously a few reasons for this including that a creative person should be in control of his or her work. So important is this that the law, both Common Law and by statute, gives heirs the power to control the estates of those who have so willed such be the case or of those who die without a will.

Further, the estate should benefit from monies generated not people who do not have contractual rights. Not people who only have physical possesion.

In other words, no, there will not be a song with Gene's voice turning up legally in March of 05 unless those who purport to "own" this recording make a deal with Gene's estate ie Kelly & Kai Clark.

However, fear not, there will indeed be more Gene music. An album is in the planning. A quality album of concert recordings.

I have many photos from those days that have never been seen and some that have been used without my permission in many books etc. The photos are from the many Byrds groups as well as the original FBB band and Gram Parsons.

If you have any interest in purchasing any of this Rock & Roll memorabilia or whatever feel free to respond. If not still continue to enjoy the music as I was a part of most of it and there was a lot of love put into those tracks.

Thanks for your time,

Jimmi Seiter

Hard Rock Café, Old Park Lane, London on Wednesday 13th April at 7pm.

Lot 12: Byrds Roger McGuinn Regal 12-String guitar

The spruce-top acoustic guitar confirmed as Byrd's lead singer Roger McGuinn's first 12-string. McGuinn has mentioned the instrument in several articles, mistaking it for a Stella but the vendor has established that the guitar is in fact a Regal, authenticated by vintage guitar expert George Grunn and bluesman Alvin 'Youngblood' Hart, which was obtained by McGuinn circa 1957. This historic guitar was given to the vendor by musician and song writer Hoyt Axton who Mcguinn had opened for early in his career, and rented a room from whilst a struggling performer. According to Axton Mcguinn left him the guitar in lieu of rent. Axton then gave the guitar to the vendor, a promising 13 year old guitarist, telling her of its connection with the then relatively unknown McGuinn. Around 1977 the vendor saw McGuinn perform at the Starwood Club, West Hollywood and afterwards went backstage where she re-met McGuinn and told him about the guitar (she had previously met him whilst performing with Axton). Apparently McGuinn smiled at the recollection of his time with Axton and told her he was happy it was in such good hands. This rare and important instrument is sold together with Hoyt Axton's original German hard shell guitar case. Price on application.

For further information and details of condition please contact ted@cooperowen.com

In 1964 Jim McGuinn (later changing his name to Roger) formed the Byrds and invented the folk-rock movement, with songs such as 'Mr Tambourine Man' and 'Turn,Turn, Turn', lending the perfect sound track to the seventies. 'The jangling, 12-string guitar sound of Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker was permanently absorbed into the vocabulary of rock', inspiring the likes of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, REM and innumerable others. This electronic Rickenbacker sound which formed the backbone to the Byrds innovative sound developed directly from McGuinn's early acoustic folk efforts on this guitar.

The lot is accompanied by:

-An image of the young Jim (later Roger) Mc Guinn playing the guitar, the pick guard visible in the picture had been replaced prior to Hoyt Axton giving it to the vendor, the existing pickguard was professionally installed in late 1964.-A letter of authenticity from Hoyt Axton.-A letter from Bill Elkins who was with the vendor when she met Roger McGuinn in 1977.

TERRY MELCHER, who produced The Byrds' MR TAMBOURINE MAN, TURN TURN TURN, BALLAD OF EASY RIDER UNTITLED and BYRDMANIAX albums, has died

From AP...

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Terry Melcher, a record producer and songwriter who aided the careers of Ry Cooder, the Byrds and the Beach Boys, has died, his publicist announced Saturday. He was 62. Melcher, the son of actress Doris Day, died Friday night at his Beverly Hills home after a long battle with melanoma.
Melcher co-wrote the hit song "Kokomo" for the Beach Boys. The song was used in the movie "Cocktail" and was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1988 for best original song. He also performed on the Beach Boys album "Pet Sounds."
In the early 1960s, Melcher began singing as a solo act and later paired with future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston to form the group Bruce & Terry. The pair had several hits, then went on to form the Rip Chords, which recorded the 1964 hit
"Hey, Little Cobra." In the mid-1960s, Melcher joined Columbia Records as a producer. Working with
the Byrds, he produced their top-selling version of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and other hits, including "Turn, Turn, Turn." Melcher also produced hit songs for Paul Revere and the Raiders and worked with Gram Parsons, the Mamas and the Papas, and Ry Cooder. He served as the executive producer of his mother's CBS show, "The Doris Day Show," from 1968 to 1972 and co-produced her mid-1980s show, "Doris Day's Best Friends." Melcher also helped run his mother's charitable activities, including the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
In 1969, his name became linked with the grisly Charles Manson murders. Melcher once rented the home where actress Sharon Tate and a group of her friends were murdered by Manson followers. Rumors circulated that Melcher, who knew Manson, was the real target because he had turned Manson down for a record contract. Los Angeles police discounted the rumors. Melcher had since moved to Malibu, and police established that Manson knew of his new address.

Jimmi Seiter ( jduke46684@aol.com)

"I was so much a part of the Byrds that reading these comments makes me feel like we did a good thing for so many people. The band and the players that played in the band were all my friends and I miss those that have passed on. Those days were so special, the times, the music, and the people. I have so many fond memories of those days in my minds eye. I hope that you all keep up the dream that the Byrds took to the world. Thanks."

Roger McGuinn and Bob Dylan co-writer JACQUES LEVY dies

From Rolling Stone:

http://www.rollingstone.com/

Dylan Lyricist Levy Dies -

Broadway, rock & roll writer was sixty-nine

Jacques Levy, musical theater director and lyricist for songs recorded by Bob Dylan and the Byrds, died of cancer last Thursday at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. He was 69 years old.

A New York native, Levy got his start practicing clinical psychology in Topeka, Kansas, but switched to a career in musical theater in the Sixties. His biggest success was as the director of 1969's Oh! Calcutta! and its revival in 1976. Levy later went on to direct a Broadway musical version of the comic strip Doonesbury in 1983 and pen the lyrics for last year's Broadway adaptation of Fame.

To rock & roll fans, Levy is best known as Bob Dylan's collaborator on the 1975 album Desire. He co-wrote seven of the nine songs on the album, including the famous "Hurricane" -- about the jailed boxer Reuben "Hurricane" Carter -- as well as "Mozambique" and "Isis."

Levy also co-wrote "Chestnut Mare" and "Just a Season" with Byrds guitarist and vocalist Roger McGuinn. The songs appeared on the band's 1970 album Untitled. Levy's songs were also recorded by artists ranging from Carly Simon to country star Crystal Gayle.

Levy is survived by his wife and two children.

Old footage by The FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS appears in a movie (DVD release planned on 11/2/2004)

"In 1970, a trainload of rock's elite (The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Band and others) rocked, rolled and jammed their way across Canada in an extended bacchanal. Never-before-seen footage immortalizes performances that capture the spirit of an unforgettable age."

The Flying Burrito Brothers (with Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke but minus Gram Parsons) are seen performing a live version of LAZY DAY

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TORONTO (AP) -- Jerry Garcia jamming with bluesman Buddy Guy. Acid-laced whiskey pouring from bottle to mouth. Music legends howling till all hours as their train roars across the Canadian countryside. "I don't know where you've been all week,'' Janis Joplin tells a Calgary crowd near the end of the documentary ``Festival Express,'' but we've been at a party.''

The film that premiered at last week's Toronto International Film Festival chronicles the last of the true '60s rock tribal gatherings, a 1970 train tour of three Canadian cities by some of the era's greatest performers. Unique footage from the train brings to life one of rock's lingering myths -- the traveling party that no one wanted to end.  ``I'll carry it the rest of my life,'' Guy says in the film. ``The chance to be with Janis and Jerry -- things like that only happen once in a lifetime.'' Or as Garcia sang in ``Might As Well,'' his homage to the tour on his 1976 ``Reflections'' album: ``Never had such a good time in my life before. .... I want to take that ride again.''

After years of litigation that tied up rights to more than 50 hours of film and sound, ``Festival Express'' got a standing ovation at its premiere from some of those who took part -- and others who wished they had. The film is about a tour that promoters Ken Walker and Thor Eaton wanted to be the Canadian Woodstock, a year after the real thing and six months after Altamont, the California festival that descended into violence and was considered the death of the '60s ideal of ``peace, love and music.'' Lacking a venue for one big festival, Walker said that he decided to stage four concerts in different cities -- Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver -- with the performers traveling on a private 17-car
train complete with diners, sleepers and lounges full of music equipment. From a business standpoint, it was a disaster. A group called the May 4 Movement -- named for the date of the Kent State shootings six weeks earlier -- thinned attendance with violent protests against the $15 ticket price. The tour went bankrupt, halting after the Calgary show, and lost more than $1 million. The footage tells another story -- a bacchanalian journey of pre-eminent talents given the freedom to just hang out together, whether on the train or at the outdoor shows. Most of the film is from the concerts -- Garcia crooning ``this darkness got to give'' as the closing refrain of ``New Speedway Boogie,'' the Dead's take on the Altamont disaster; powerful performances by the Band of ``Slippin' and Slidin''' and ``The Weight''; Guy ripping through ``Money''; the Flying Burrito  Brothers minus Gram Parsons (who had been kicked out for his drug use) doing Parsons' ``Lazy Day'' with future Eagle Bernie Leadon singing.  ``I sort of remember the feeling of being on stage without Gram,'' Leadon said in an interview the night before the premiere. ``Like, oh no, it's just us. Step up there, remember those lyrics, sing.'' Then there is Joplin, decked out in full ``Pearl'' regalia with a pink feather boa in her hair, unleashing her raw power in ``Cry Baby'' and the final concert song of the film, ``Tell Mama.'' The camera stays with her for the entirety of both songs, capturing every nuance of her howling delivery. Joplin's death from a heroin overdose three months later was one of several reasons the Festival Express tour, and its footage, remained unknown for so long. Legal wrangling over the bankruptcy included a battle between Walker and Willem Poolman, producer of the filming of the tour, over rights to the footage. Gavin Poolman, Willem's son and one of the film's producers, told how the working copy of the footage spent years in his family's garage.

Because the issue remained unsettled in court, the negatives ended up in the Canadian national archives and were recovered in the 1990s. Bob Smeaton, a two-time Grammy-winning producer, signed on as director and Eddie Kramer, who produced gems with Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and countless others, handled the mix. Much of the dynamic footage was shot by Peter Biziou, a cinematographer who later won an Academy Award for ``Mississippi Burning.''

According to Smeaton, ``Festival Express'' might well be the last great film from the era, joining ``Woodstock,'' ``Gimme Shelter'' and a few others. ``There isn't anything else in the vaults anywhere,'' he said. ``It doesn't exist. This is like finding the Holy Grail.''

CHRIS HILLMAN receives an award.

An excerpt from the article on Tennessean.com

A final lifetime achievement award went to Chris Hillman, whose work has placed pins all over Americana's roots music roadmap. Hillman began his career in bluegrass but wound up in rock band The Byrds. The group made the seminal country-rock album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". Hillman played in other country-rock bands, then wound up as a mainstream country artist in the 1980s with the Desert Rose Band.

Hillman smiled at his award, said a few words, then walked mid-stage to sing Wheels, a song he wrote with Gram Parsons and recorded as a member of the Flying Burrito Brothers. He dedicated the song to Parsons' daughter, Polly, and to Grand Ole Opry member Skeeter Davis, who died Sunday.

When the long-haired Byrds were treated roughly by an Opry audience in the 1960s, Hillman explained that Davis was the only Opry member to offer words of support.

The Desert Rose Band's last CD LIFE GOES ON will be available in the USA in early november from SIERRA RECORDS.

Unavailable for more since the late '90s and never released in the United States, this 1993 release was the last album recorded by the Desert Rose Band. Sierra is pleased to announce that they are accepting advance orders for this November 2nd release which will not be available from any other retail, mail order or internet outlet. With its prophetic album title song 'Life Goes On', this may have been the Desert Rose Band's best album ever! With only a couple of the band's US releases barely in print but soon to be deleted, this is a great opportunity to hear once again what a real country band sounds like! Most of the songs were co-written by Chris Hillman, which were and are some of his best ever. He was joined by original members Herb Pedersen on beautiful harmony vocals and Bill Bryson on bass with then new members, Tom Brumley (legendary steel player with Buck Owens and Rick Nelson), Jeff Ross on lead guitar and Tim Grogan, drums. Returning to their original producers, they were joined by special guests Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Al Perkins and original band member John Jorgenson. Even after ten years, what a way to say "Adios!"

Songs: WHAT ABOUT LOVE / NIGHT AFTER NIGHT / WALK ON BY / LOVE'S REFUGEES / LIFE GOES ON / THAT'S NOT THE WAY / TILL IT'S OVER / HOLD ON / A LITTLE RAIN / THROW ME A LIFELINE.

SUNDAZED RECORDS will re-release Gram Parsons & The International Submarine Band's CD SAFE AT HOME in november 2004 with one bonus track.

Details from Sundazed:

"Just before Gram Parsons cut a wide swath through American music with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-era Byrds and the Flying Burrito Bros., he forged a new musical genre with the seminal 1967 country-rock sides he cut with his legendary International Submarine Band. Sundazed Music, in conjunction with Shiloh Records, is proud to present a compact disc release of the ISB's highly collectible Safe At Home album, taken for the first time from the pristine, two-track stereo LHI-label masters, now sporting accurate original artwork, rare photos and a revealing new essay by noted author Sid Griffin. We've added the last piece to the jigsaw puzzle by remarrying the originally un-issued track "Knee Deep In The Blues" (recorded during the Safe At Home sessions) to this resoundingly important musical statement. DAVID HEMMINGS HAPPENS album from 1967 will be released on CD at long last on July 5th, 2004.

It will come out on the REV-OLA label from the UK.

Next to vocal and instrumental contributions by Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, this album also features

David Hemmings' version of an otherwise unreleased song by Gene Clark called BACK STREET MIRROR.

This track was produced by Leon Russell, who used the instrumental backing track already recorded for the

Gene Clark version (planned to appear on his second Columbia LP, that never came out).

You can order your copy directly from Rev-Ola at http://www.revola.co.uk

Chris Hillman is credited with backing vocals on Johnny Rivers' new version of Gene Clark's "I'll Feel A Whole Lot

Better". This song appears on Johnny Rivers' new CD titled REINVENTION HIGHWAY

In a recent (5/20/2004) interview, ROGER MCGUINN said what follows about who played on The Byrds 1990

"Reunion Tracks" recorded for the 4 CDs Box Set:

"When the Byrds box set came out back in '91, Sony Music said "Well, would you guys be willing to do some new tracks?", so we went to Nashville and Crosby and Hillman were there, and we did a couple of songs together; then it was time to do my song, that Stan Lynch and I had written together called "Love That Never Dies" right? So Crosby and Hillman bug out. They said "Well you guys can handle it." [laughter] So Stan Lynch, John Jorgensen and myself were the Byrds for that song. There are no other Byrds on that song, and it got played on the radio -- it was like a Top 40 hit.  I think it's funny because it goes to prove the name "Byrds" is just a name alone, really."

They really fooled us, didn't they?

Here's a review by TOM ISENHOUR (lifted from the Clarence White Forum webpage):

I got it today. Listened to all 15 songs by Byrds/FBB/DRB/GP and this guy is right on the money with capturing the right sound on these songs we all like to hear. It's like a sing alone karaoke CD. You can't help but sing along with this one. He is real dedicated to getting the correct sound and tone the originals put out. In fact he's using the right instruments for it to sound original. You can't get the Sneaky sound unless you got that Fender steel. You need a long pull bender to get the CW sound just right and he's on the money. Almost so perfect in fact I would swear Sneaky, JD, Chris Hillman, CW came into the studio to help him on this project of love and devotion to the roots of countryrock. This guy is so good if Chris wanted to put another DRB on the road this guy could fill in for Jorgeson or JD. I remember Jorgeson would change guitars for just about each song and this guy does too in order to capture the right mood and tone of these songs. I like Steels and this CD is full of steels doing the songs I like best.

Bruce Kula's CD ARS GRATIA WHATEVER (released in 2003) features Roger McGuinn playing and singing on one track.

A previously unreleased album by L.A. duo TWIN ENGINE has just been issued by U.K. label REVOLA.

Among the players on the album are CHRIS HILLMAN, MICHAEL CLARKE and CLARENCE WHITE.

This CD is available from major onlilne mail order websites.

Lifted from the REVOLA website at http://www.revola.co.uk/:

Twin Engine
Twin Engine
CRREV 57
A discovery
and a half! This short-lived L.A. duo that included ex-Poor member/Ballroom songwriter Randy Naylor along with Constantine Gusias was well respected by their peers just check out the list of players on the album!
This never-before released album was to be the second production by Joey Stec and Ralph Scala for their UA deal, changes at the company meant they said "no thanks" - their loss!

With a cast of players including not one but three Byrds (Chris Hillman, Clarence White, and Michael Clarke) plus the cream of the emergent Hollywood session young guns (Chuck Blackwell, Dywayne Bryant) and even Randy Fuller of the Bobby Fuller 4, this is a west coast post psych treat! In an odd place where softpop met psych and Americana is where Twin engine are at, with Chris Hillman revisiting his days as a jazz bassist *and* a demon mandolin player and Clarence White SMOKIN' with some of his best recorded work, this is a hell of a find!!

A must for fans of The Byrds, Americana, and west coast rock in general, Twin Engine are the missing link to be sure, but one whose eclecticism stands up today better then ever! Great songs, great singing, great playing, exclusive interviews and pictures... what more can you want!

Give My Love A Chance / My Life Gets Better Everyday / Secrets / Mistress Of The Morning / No Time Is Better Then Now / Darlin / Flowered Wall / Can't Keep My Mind Off Of You / Gold Mine / When Will I Be Loved / Song Is Now / Same Train

A much in-demand session drummer, he performed with the Byrds only when his studio scheduled permitted, often being replaced by other musicians at performances.

His only official appearance on a Byrds record is on the BANJOMAN original soundtrack LP.

He might also be playing on some of the bonus tracks on the remastered FARTHER ALONG cd.

He also appeared with the band on several TV performances.

He played drums for Roger McGuinn, Gram Parsons, Skip Battin, Herb Pedersen, J.D. EVAN DANDO, ED HARCOURT and JIM LAUDERDALE are to headline 'STANDING IN THE SHADOW OF THE GRIEVOUS ANGEL' on November 15 in a tribute concert to country-rock legend GRAM PARSONS.

Taking place at London's Islington Union Chapel as part of the Barbican's 'Way Beyond Nashville' season, the intimate gig will mark the 30th anniversary of Gram Parsons’ death - aged just 26 - which fell on September 19. The line-up will also include Grand Drive, The Coal Porters, Adam Masterson and Gram Parsons' only child Polly Parsons.

The Sin City All Stars, featuring BJ Cole, will be the house band for the event.

Gram Parsons found fame through The International Submarine Band, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers as well as through his solo work, though tragically died on September 19, 1973 when he overdosed on morphine and tequila at The Joshua Tree Inn in the Californian desert.

His death also took a bizarre twist when road manager Phil Kaufman stole Gram Parsons' body, took it back to the desert, doused it in petrol and burned it.

California country band DAVE GLEASON'S WASTED DAYS recorded a unreleased/unheard GRAM PARSONS song on their self titled debut cd on Well Worn records in 2002. The song was pulled from a bootleg cassette, and it is called "FUNKY STRING QUARTET".

JOHN YORK writes to Byrds Flyght about his newly released CD

John York and Yukiko Matsuyama have just released their first CD together entitled "Koto".

Here's what John writes to Byrds Flyght (reprinted with permission):

Hi Raoul,

The CD is called "KOTO."  Yukiko Matsuyama is a brilliant koto player from Osaka, Japan. We have been playing concerts together for a couple of years. Some of the cuts were recorded live at those concerts and some were recorded at my studio. Except for the Beatle tune "Tomorrow Never Knows," all the music is original, composed by Yukiko, myself and artist Sumi Nakano in various combinations. Some cuts are instrumental and some have vocals. I sing in Japanese and English. I play 12 string, slide and gu zheng (a Chinese table harp). Yukiko plays koto (Japanese zither) and gu zheng as well.

The image of this CD is the artwork on the cover entitled "Koto".  It has a poem in Japanese stitched into it. I learned the poem and set it to music. So I had to sing it in Japanese. Another poem by Sumi Nakano I sing in English and Japanese. It is very new musical territory. A new musical bridge. You know I consider this my musical mission in life. (Remember "Sacred Path Songs"?) Any way, I hope your website visitors will find this CD inviting. And thanks again for all your inspiration and assistance.

Best wishes,   John York

The CD is only available through John York at the moment. The price is $20.00 US which also covers postage inside US and handling. Checks should be made out to John York and sent to John York, P.O Box 261, Claremont, CA 91711, USA.

Roger McGuinn-less Byrds concert in 1967? Yes, it happened!

In october 1967, Gene Clark briefly rejoined The Byrds after David Crosby had been fired. Before the end of october, he left again. Then, in november 1967, it was Michael Clarke's turn to leave. He was replaced by Kevin Kelley, and the lineup (as from the end of november 1967) was Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Kevin Kelley. The band was booked to appear at the Winterland, San Francisco in december 1967. Roger McGuinn came down with the flu, and was unable to perform. Gene Clark was called to fill in, and the lineup for this particular performance was Gene Clark(playing a Gretsch), Chris Hillman and Kevin Kelley

Anyone owning a recording of this performance, please step forward!

New BYRDS compilation released in the U.K. :

MOJO presents...an Introduction to THE BYRDS

(24 classic tracks - all previously released)

The 2 CDs reissue of SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO by The BYRDS and The INTERNATIONAL

SUBMARINE BAND is out! - read a review (thanks to Bob Wall)

The reissue of Sweetheart Of The Rodeo is out in the U.S.. - I picked up a copy last night.  (I believe that the new Byrds Box Set is the item that has been postponed until 2004). In brief, the packaging for the Legacy edition is very nice - the CDs come in what can be described as a gatefold digipack (after you remove the vinyl slip cover with titles and promo blurbs). The first fold out contains a silhouette-type band on stage picture (only Mcguinn's features appear out of shadow) against a yellowish backdrop with the band's name appearing twice and the same yellow flowers that appear in the shape of a heart serving as a border. In turn, these open up to reveal color photos of Chris, Gram and Roger on the left and the full band on the right (again with the yellow flower borders). The discs sit in the middle panels above photos of the session tape box cover notes. The left panel contains a pocket in which the booklet sits. David Fricke's essay is informative and acknowledges Mcguinn, Hillman, Lloyd Green, Jon Corneal, Rick Clark and Steve Fishell for "their insights and contributions". Biggest omissions: actual session credits and discussion of the newly presented outtakes and rehearsals (for example, why these takes were chosen).

Byrds Flyght's observations as to the inclusion of the ISB tracks are well warranted. I feel they are somewhat akin to the early Crosby tracks that were grafted onto the Preflyte sessions. Nice to have (for those who didn't have them already), but not of a piece with the main dish. It would have made as much sense to include earlier forays by the Byrds into country. For that matter, it would have been a major coup if they had unearthed the rumored sessions featuring Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Clarence White, Gib Guilbeau & Gene Parsons (the "prototype Burritos"). But I digress - those aren't really part of the Sweetheart story. I assume that the Grand Ole Opry performance isn't available or of sufficient quality to release but they would've been more appropriate. Similarly, live recordings from the Parsons-Byrds era might have been interesting but again the quality of the performance and/or recording might have prevented this. I need to spend more time with the outtakes but the first run through sounded interesting. This release atones somewhat for the bizarre decision to omit the Gram Parsons lead vocals from the original album reissue. Oh, I almost forgot: "All I Have Are Memories" is a nice treat (and writing credit goes to Kevin Kelley, not White/Green as per Lloyd Green's interview.)

Another Gram Parsons documentary movie in the make

Gram Parsons Film Nearing Completion News on a new project nearing completion: "Thirty years after his untimely death, a thoroughly researched and internationally produced documentary film about the musical legend Gram Parsons is in the works and expected to be finished still this year. His exciting biography, the bizarre circumstances of his early death and his important role in the development of popular music are major themes of the documentary "Fallen Angel Gram Parsons" which is a co-production of the Berlin- and Düsseldorf-based Spothouse production company and the BBC. The film director and musician Gandulf Hennig is working to complete this project in the Fall of this year on location exactly where the events took place. This fusion of interviews with Gram Parsons' contemporaries and those who followed in his footsteps combined with rare footage of his performances is overseen by the American music journalist and GP-biographer Sid Griffin. In this film, friends and colleagues of Gram Parsons as well as today's music stars have their chance to speak.

"We've been working on getting this film together for five years, and it took some real convincing to get some of the interviewees on board," says Hennig. "Sid Griffin and I traveled through the USA, visited places where Gram Parsons lived and spoke with many of his personal and musical contemporaries. "Due to Gram's continually growing legend now, thirty years after his tragic death, it is high time to reevaluate the person Gram Parsons and his effect on the music world. The film is produced by Gandulf Hennig and Alfred Holighaus. The Executive Producer is Mark Cooper, Creative Head of BBC Music Entertainment. German television stations have also agreed to support the film, including the Bavarian broadcaster Bayrische Rundfunk. Worldwide distribution of the film, which is mainly shot on location in the USA, is being handled by the Munich-based firm Telepool. Production preparation was backed by the Film Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia, Filmstifung NRW. The film is expected to be aired on the BBC early next year and play in European theaters next Spring."

Forthcoming on Ace/Big Beat Records:

THE GOSDIN BROTHERS “SOUNDS OF GOODBYE”

Reissue Producer: Alec Palao
Available: October 2003

Big Beat announces the latest and most eagerly anticipated volume of its acclaimed vintage country-rock reissue programme, past instalments of which have anthologised Guilbeau & Parsons and Clarence White. We now take great pride in presenting the first-ever retrospective devoted to The Gosdin Brothers, a duo best known as the launch pad for future country superstar Vern Gosdin, but in hindsight one of the finest and unwittingly cutting edge acts of the late 1960s Bakersfield country rock renaissance.

The Gosdin Brothers 1968 album “Sounds Of Goodbye” is nowadays regarded as one of the most satisfying blends of country, pop and folk-rock that the era produced, yet because at the time it was aimed at the country market rather than the hip scene, the record, and indeed the acts importance, has been overshadowed by the frankly more copy-worthy Byrds and Burritos. As charter members of the country rock brotherhood that included Clarence White, Gib Guilbeau and Gene Parsons – all of whom provided the sparkling musical support for the duos studio recordings – Vern and Rex Gosdin brought a knowing savvy to the music that was tempered by the innocent freshwater sensibilites of their stunning harmonies, and the unsurpassed warmth of Verns lead vocal. With its array of fine songs, and sympathetic production by maverick Gary Paxton, “Sounds Of Goodbye” is a true jewel of early country rock.

Paxton had steered the Gosdins to success in the country field with the 1967 hit “Hangin’ On”, but the popularity of this plaintive country ballad obscured the fact that Vern and Rex had shared management and toured with the Byrds for two years prior, most famously contributing to Gene Clarks eponymous solo LP, but also recording superb folk-rock of their own, on obscure singles and unissued sessions.

This compilation collects together the contents of the “Sounds Of Goodbye” album and its attendant non-LP Bakersfield International sides, along with unreleased material and esoteric singles, including the Gosdins legendary Edict 45. Produced by Chris Hillman, this record was cut in December 1966, features accompaniment from Hillman, Michael Clarke and Clarence White, and is thereby tantamount to an outtake from Genes LP or even “Younger Than Yesterday”. Additionally, we are most proud to include a previously unknown outtake from the session, “Tell Me”, the jaw-dropping final thirty seconds of which are concrete proof that technically and melodically, Clarence was already in a class of his own on electric guitar. Yep, it’s that good.

As with the previous volumes, the package comes with lengthy liner notes detailing the career of the Gosdins in the mid-1960s, with contributions from those involved, and plenty of visuals too.

Who plays steel guitar on SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO ?

Llyod Green tells it all :

Lifted from the Steel Guitar Forum:

"Unfortunately, the steel players, J. D. Maness and myself, were never identified by song on the previous two "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" releases. Yet a third one will shortly be out on Sony in a double CD, with all the additional takes on each song, some as many as 15 or more!

I recently did an interview with David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine, who is overseeing the historical info of this project. During the interview, I furnished him with many corrections that were/are historically wrong. He has promised to correct the record. I won't explain them here, except to once and for all, tell you folks who played steel on each song in that seminal album. Here goes.

You Ain't Going Nowhere - Lloyd Green
I Am A Pilgrim -(no steel)
The Christian Life -J.D. Maness
You Don't Miss Your Water - J.D. Maness
You're Still On My Mind - J.D. Maness
Pretty Boy Floyd - (no steel)
Hickory Wind - Lloyd Green
One Hundred Years From Now - Lloyd Green
Blue Canadian Rockies - (no steel)
Life In Prison - J.D. Maness
Nothing Was Delivered -Lloyd Green
You've Got A Reputation - Lloyd Green (on dobro)
Lazy Days - (no steel)
Pretty Polly - (no steel)
All I Have Are Memories -Lloyd Green & Clarence White on guitar.

We both wrote this song, although 3 different writers are given credit erroneously on different albums.

For the full corrections, read the Rolling Stone story when it is published or buy the newest version of the CD on Sony due out this Fall.

Thank you,

Lloyd Green"

Byrds Flyght comment

Thanks Lloyd, this was a question often asked by Byrds fans. But Kevin Kelley also claimed to have written "All I Have Are Memories" - now he loses the only writer credit he had on Byrds albums

Forthcoming STEVE HILL concert with CHRIS HILLMAN

Steve Hill (with Chris Hillman sitting in) will be performing at the Coffee Gallery in Altadena, CA. this coming Friday evening, October 10th. Steve Hill is the gifted singer-songwriter who co-penned with Chris Hillman most of the wonderful Desert Rose Band songs.

Opening for Steve Hill and Chris Hillman will be Matt Cartsonis. While not exactly a name in Byrds-related circles, Matt Cartsonis is a regular player in John McEuen's entourage outside of the Dirt Band, and was previously a member of the late Warren Zevon's band and a member of Bryndle - Andrew Gold's old group. A funny yet strong singer - and banjo-guitar-mandolin virtuoso.

Fresh news (27 july 2003) :  No Other -  remastered with extra tracks

Gene Clark's NO OTHER  (considered by many as his masterpiece) re-re-release with

BONUS TRACKS has been postponed to September 2003.

(some websites still give it an August release date).

This album was originally meant to be released as a double LP, but came out as a single LP for budgetary reasons,

although enough tracks were written and recorded to make it a double.

Unfortunately, all bonus tracks on the CD (except for a demo - by Gene - of  Dillard and Clark's TRAIN LEAVES HERE THIS MORNING) will be demo versions of the known LP tracks.

HERE ARE THE BONUS TRACKS :

Silver (demo)

From A Silver Phial (demo)

Some Misunderstanding (demo)

Life's Greatest Fool (demo)

No Other (demo)

Lady Of The North (demo)

Train Leaves Here This Morning (outtake)

SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO by THE BYRDS is planned for re-release again on september 2, 2003, as a double CD.

Details (as published by ICE Magazine):

CD 1:

- 11 songs that comprised the original version

- 6 Gram Parsons vocals included on the 1997 remastered release & on the Box Set

- Kevin Kelley vocal version of "All I Have Is Memories"

- radio spot advertisement

CD 2:

- A & B sides of The International Submarine Band (ISB) single released on Columbia  (mono version)

"Sum Up Broke" & "One Day Week"

- two more ISB singles (b-side "Truck Drivin' Man") and an a-side that was an instrumental  tie-in for the movie

   "The Russians Are Coming" (mono)

- three stereo tracks originally released on The ISB lp "Safe At Home":

"Blue eyes" "Luxury liner" "Strong Boy" (all from stereo two-track masters)

(All of the preceding were included to give an idea of Gram Parsons' output prior to joining The Byrds)

- 14 previously unheard rehearsal sessions and alternate takes from the  Sweetheart Of The Rodeo sessions

BYRDS FLYGHT comment: although many people might not agree with us, we think that  International Submarine Band tracks

do no belong to a Byrds CD. This is has turned into a Gram Parsons CD, not a Byrds CD.

A much better idea would be to re-release the International Submarine Band CD SAFE AT HOMEwith all other ISB single tracks added.

Due for august release in Japan are the first 6 Byrds albums (complete with bonus tracks) being reissued in paper sleeves in as close to the original sleeve designs as possible.

Dan Fogelberg's new album is titled Full Circle, after the Gene Clark song.

The CD includes Dan's version of the song.

Lifted from the Gene Clark Internet Forums (sent by Saul Davis) :

So Rebellious A Lover by Gene Clark & Carla Olson will be reissued by Fuel2000 Records (MCA Universal) in September 2003 with a number of "orphan" bonus tracks including the officially unreleased Gene Clark song Winning Hand as well as and Broken Hearts & Broken Dreams, Day For Night, Jokers Are Wild, Lover's Turnaround, and Changes

BYRDS FLYGHT comments:

Except for WINNING HAND (which widely circulates on unofficial CDs), all the bonus tracks have already been officially released. Except for Broken Heart a Broken Dreams (from Carla's first solo album), they're all tracks recorded with the Textones. Another such song, called WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME TODAY, still remains officially unreleased. Unfortunately, it seems that the main concern of those holding the rights to these songs, is to make us buy the same things again and again, instead of making other unreleased songs available to the people most likely to buy them: us, the fans!

Where are the promised MOUNTAIN STAGE and UNDER THE SILVERY MOON CDs ?

For those reading French, there's a new website dedicated to GRAM PARSONS.

The URL is http://gramparsons.free.fr

COUNTING CROWS cover GRAM PARSONS

The new release by the Counting Crows (due on Monday June 9th) is a 2 CD release containing previously

unreleased live & studio bonus tracks.

One of these tracks is a studio cover of Gram Parsons' Return Of the Grievous Angel.

Gene Clark's "Feeling Higher" is covered by OSEEO on their newly released CD "Perilous Rescue

The CD features "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow on steel guitar. Pete certainly shines on the track "You've Got That Look In Your Eyes" which was co-written by Forrest Rosaire and Lonnie DeAraujo, who recorded with Jim Dickson and Chris Hillman back in the mid 1980's.

The band's website is at www.oseeomusic.com . You can order the CD from there, and there are some nice recent pictures of Pete in the studio with the band, MP3's of some of the tunes and some background information on the musicians who worked on the project.

A Tribute CDr of Gene Clark songs performed by members of the Gene Clark Yahoo! Mailing List  is planned.

If you are a subscriber to the list, and you can contribute to the CDr, you already know what  you have to do.

If you are not yet a member of the list, but you think you can contribute, you can subscribe by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GeneClarkList

TOPANGA SKYLINE is Skip' s solo album from 1973, that remains unreleased.

It also is his most achieved solo work.

This album was recorded with members of Country Gazette, The Flying Burrito Brothers and some other musicians with a Byrds connection.

Let's hope it will soon be officially released, as steps are actually taken.

It could be a remastered version with added tracks (that were not originally planned to appear on the (unreleased) original vinyl LP).
