Spiral of Silence (B) played with bands such as Gary Numan, Echo & the Bunnymen, Cranes, Front 242, Chameleons, Das Ich, Xymox, The Creatures, DAF, Nena Hagen, etc.

Our music is often described as post-Joy Division wave, rock and sometimes even pop...
We call it coldwave ROCK. Whatever. It's all rock 'n roll, isn't it??

The Spiral of Silence-story goes way back. It all started in August 1991: a couple of friends started a band called THEATRE OF PAIN.

Mainly influenced by icons such as JOY DIVISION and BAUHAUS, Theatre of Pain toured for a couple of years in Belgium. In 1993 a first demo (TOP) was recorded.
Things went well. The demo was re-printed a few times and received positive reactions.

Whether they agreed or not, they received the status of "Belgian Joy Division". Those who are familiar with Tom's vocals, know why...ti

End 1993, guitar-player Johan Gies was replaced by Bart Auwaerts. This young but very talented musician had great influence on the band. His sound was very characteristic. Theatre of Pain was re-born. They sounded better than ever before. Not only did they become more mature, but due to Bart's guitar-work and the usage of synths they created an own sound "Beautiful Money" was a modest hit on alternative radio shows in Italy.

Unfortunately, November 1st 1994,
Bart Auwaerts committed suicide. Age 18. The band lost a friend and a non-replacable musician. They decided to continue, using another name...

Anyway, in 1995, a second demo was recorded: "Connection". It contained a cover version of Joy Division's "Atmosphere" which was a modest succes on alternative radio in and around Europe. Thanks to Connection, Spiral was contacted by the Italian label Energeia Records. They recorded a first CD, LEAP, containing new material and a collection of older demo-songs.

LEAP meant a final breakthrough for Spiral of Silence. The album contains an overview of almost a decade of Spiral. It includes 5 re-mastered songs ('93-'95) and 3 new songs produced by Jeff Schmitt. Jeff is known for his work with "Swimming with Her", an experimental art-band from the USA. He also worked with artists like Michael Giles (King Crimson) and Peter Gabriel.

Spiral played shows at VOORUIT (Ghent) and appeared on the biggest alternative festival in Belgium: EUROROCK, together with bands such as Gary Numan and Echo & the Bunnymen. They also made their appearance on Germany's biggest alternative festival, Leipzig Gotik Treffen, in front of 10.000 people! They also did support act for Cranes at VK (Brussels).

September 2002 Spiral of Silence released its second full album: dEcAdEnT. It was co-produced by Antonio Palermo, guitarist for the legendary SIGLO XX and Kloot Per W (Belgian godfather of rock). Also Metal Molly's Allan Muller produced some tracks (Metal Molly scored a hit with their track "Orange"; they did support act for David Bowie).

Keyboard player Jeroen Nuyts was replaced by Bart Callaerts. This is certainly a new beginning for the band. Bart's analogue sounds and crazy sequences make the band sound better than ever... Prepare for next releases!

to be continued...

"Spiral of Silence" is a theory about the understanding of public opinion as it has been developed by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann. Public opinion is conceived as a social phenomenon, as opinions or behavior which people can publicly perform without exposing themselves to the threat of negative sanctions by other members of the society. Especially in value-laden areas of social life the individual unconciously looks about which behaviour or opinion is accepted by others, and which is not. The individual will avoid to perform inaccepted behaviour in public and will remain silent if he feels his opinion to belong to the minority or to be losing ground.
