DS2 Policy & Projects
1. Activity of a Member
Currently Deep Space 2 has 26 members. First right of a member is to have fun. Being in a chapter should not become "a job". A few years of Star Trek Fandom experience and being member of several international and local Fan Associations have learned me not to push anyone in doing something. I have noticed, mainly as the Chairman of the IFC (International Fandom Council) during 1997, that some fan clubs are very demanding, with the result that members lose the fun, are no longer motivated and eventually leave the club. More than once I have heard the expression "Our club is in a crisis". That is not going to happen on Deep Space 2. If a member wants to become active or even very active on Deep Space 2, it will be encouraged, but if a member can engage her/himself less then others, that is OK too.
As Deep Space 2 started more as a family-friend engagement, we all had regular contact and if new members will arive they will be welcomed on Deep Space 2 is their own family. The main activites we do on Deep Space 2 is exchanging SciFi video tapes and books, play role-playing by mail and email, write science fiction stories, but also going to conventions/exhibitions, even out of the country. You can look at the DS2 SciFi Activities List, what the next engagement will be. Pictures of most of the Deep Space 2 activities have been added to the Deep Space 2 webpages, section DS2 Pictures. In the Deep Space 2 Archives you can find reports of away teams and the Deep Space 2 monthly chapter reports. We would like to invite every one to read them and see what Deep Space 2 has done in the past. But besides SciFi activity we also do a lot of Community Service.
Please visit the membership section to see how to become a member of Deep Space 2.
2. Promotion Policy
Aha. This is always the tricky part. Some members will have a lot of attention for their rank. Deep Space 2 is a Starfleet Command Starbase in the UFP and therefore Star Trek naval ranks or marine ranks are granted. We have decided that the lowest rank on Deep Space 2 is the rank of ensign. We have experienced in the past that starting as a crewman is very frustrating and in some clubs the demandes for becoming an officer (Ensign) are ridiculous. There is more than one club which had to change the promotion policies because they were losing members only because of the extended and complex promotion system.
Every Official meeting, the entire members congress will decide who gets promoted and why. There is a "one step" promotion system. A member can only move up in rank by one step at the time.
The ranking system of UFP is of course in order.
3. Community Service
Aside of the SciFi fun, we find that we should do something for the community. The main and followed projects of Deep Space 2 are Amnesty International, the World Wildlife Fund and Doctors Without Borders. This does certainly NOT exclude local short term charity. These projects will be done seperately and at the time they can be organised.
4. Science Projects
DS2 crew members have joined the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Project. Thousands of people have joined this project, as an individual or as a group. DS2 has joined the SETI Project as a
group in the DS2 SETI Project.
5. The Internet
Deep Space 2 is also an On Line chapter. The DS2 Newsletter is published on the world wide web, DS2 uses a Mailing List and you can meet other On Line fans all over the world via the DS2 Diplomatic Relations Page. Of course the DS2 Chatroom is always open to have a chat with a friend. Deep Space 2 even has an Academy On Line.
- The DS2 crew is writing the DS2 story which is published on the World Wide Web. Please take a look and send us your comments.
- Another writing activity is The Deep Space 2 RPG. The members of the DS2 crew have created a character which participates in a great adventure. The RPG is played by mail and email.
- DS2 uses a Mailing List, which is only available for members.
5. Meetings
Meetings should be a pleasant gathering of the members. Most of the meetings are continue running on the internet and the mailing lists. News and articles can be send in for the monthly Deep Space 2 Newsflash, the monthly magazine published by Deep Space 2.
There is a special remark about meetings of DS2 members we should make you aware of. A large part of DS2 has internet access and these members have almost daily contact with each other. Even more than that. For the on line members we can confirm that we "meet" every day.
