Mijn broer gaf dit door, omdat hij het te zwaar, te bombastisch vond, gelukkig zat hij er totaal naast. Aanvankelijk voelde ik dezelfde weerstand tegen deze plaat. 'In Gowan Ring' speelt namelijk met traditionele 'Keltische' folk elementen, wat vergelijkingen met 'gotic' of nog erger new-age toestanden oproept. Maar 'In Gowan Ring' gebruikt deze invloeden op een merkwaardig lichte manier. Het is vreemd dat enkel een dergelijke thematische keuze een band zo erg kan veroordelen. Het is zoals Michael Anderson zei: " I always thought that they were a bit pigeon holed in their label stay with World Serpent. 'In Gowan Ring' could just as easily be playing at Terrastock or with bands like 'Godspeed You Black Emperor ! or 'Mourning Cloak' as with the 'Legendary Pink Dots'. I hear in their music the most blissful blend of traditional European folk music and modern experimental tone constructs. " Het is eerlijker te starten met de songs, die van een verstilde schoonheid zijn vergelijkbaar met het beste van Paul Simon. Sober in hun essentie, maar zeer vol geproduceerd. Deze productie is nagenoeg perfect. Fluiten, bellen, hoorns, ... geven de songs dat folk gevoel. De rustige stem doet wat denken aan Ian Brown, Paul Simon en Jim O'Rourke. In de instrumentale nummertjes wordt wat meer experiment bovengehaald. Zo is het laatste nummer een twaalf minuten durende drone , die wat doet denken aan Amp. Een sterk en moedig uitgangspunt, een prachtige vakmanschap en afwerking zet In Gowan Ring op een zeer unieke plaats. |
My brother past this through because he found it to much, to bombastic, but I'm glad to say that he was wrong. Firstly I thought the same because 'In Gowan Ring' plays with elements of traditional 'Celtic' folk and this reminds to genres as 'Gothic', or even worse 'new-age'. But In Gowan Ring use this in a remarkable light manner. It is strange that such a thematically choice can bring so many preoccupations along. " It was maybe more honest when I started this review with telling something about the songs. These are from such a tender beauty, comparable with the best of Paul Simon . The Essence is sober, but the production is full and rich. Flutes, bells, horns, etc, give the songs that folk feeling. The vocals are tranquil. The singer has a really beautiful voice that reminds a little bit of Ian Brown, Paul Simon and Jim O'Rourke. In the instrumentals there is more experiment. The last song 'a twelve minute drone' reminds to Amp. A strong and courageous concept leads to a unique sound. |
