Screenshots |
Although
written for the Windows XP platform, EMXP still uses an old MS-DOS look &
feel interface. The Emu Emax, Emulator II and Emulator III samplers are
children of the 80’s and early 90’s, so we thought some nostalgic user
interface would preserve the spirit of those times… Some EMXP
screenshots can be found here. |

Next version |
The next
version (03.01) will add RS422 support for Emax and Emulator II. A custom
USB<---->RS422 adapter will be required, standard USB<---->Serial
adapters will not work. The custom adapter consists of only a few components
which are generally available on the market. These adapters can be easily
assembled by anyone with basic electronics skills. Schematics will be made
available in the near future. Total cost of hardware components is about USD
50. Perhaps some people will also offer their services to build and ship the
unit on special request. Also planned in
2010 is a maintenance version with: -
More uniform screen interactions across all sampler formats -
More uniform WAV-to-soundbank conversions across all sampler formats -
(tbd) Emulator III OS file support -
(tbd) OMI CD support for Emulator II -
(tbd) Oberheim DPX-1 support No release dates
have been determined yet. |

What EMXP is |
EMXP is software
primarily designed for use with vintage Emu samplers. Started as an
evolution of the original EMX software (which was only available for MS-DOS),
EMXP can read and write EMAX floppy disks in Windows XP but it also contains
a lot of additional features such as WAV-to-EMAX conversion and support for
removable harddisks (like ZIP disks and CDROMs). Moreover EMXP
is not limited to Emax samplers. Other vintage Emu samplers are also
supported: Emulator II and Emulator III. EMXP can even translate soundbanks
between all these samplertypes. Although EMXP
will keep its focus on Emu vintage samplers, the newest (beta) version also
supports SoundFont2. This enables any vintage Emu sampler user to translate
his/her sound banks to the widely accepted SoundFont2 format. From this
format it is possible to translate to any other sampler type using some other
(commercial) translation software. And of course
the other way around is also supported. EMXP also
supports Akai S1000, but conversions are limited to Emax-to-Akai and
Wav-to-Akai. Besides EMXP,
this website provides also -
some Oberheim DPX tools for Windows XP (click here). -
some Sequential Prophet 2000/2002 tools for Windows XP (click here). |

Platform & hardware support |
EMXP runs on
Windows XP. Some people have also been using EMXP on Windows 2000
successfully. EMXP can also run on Windows Vista, but the floppy disk access
feature has not been tested yet on In order to be
able to read and write floppy disks, you will need a PC with an internal
floppy drive and the OmniFlop floppy driver installed. EMXP requires at least
version v2.01j, which can be downloaded here. We recommend
however v2.01n
or higher, since these versions don’t require any license procedure anymore
for use with EMXP. For more information, see the EMXP manual. External (USB)
floppy disk devices are not supported. In order to be
able to read and write Emax or Emulator III removable hard disks, you will
need a removable hard disk drive – such as an Iomega ZIP drive – connected to
or installed into your PC. EMXP has been tested with USB and Parallel Port
ZIP drives. Both 100 MB and 250 MB disks and drives are supported. In order to be
able to read Emax or Emulator III CDROMs, you will need a CD-ROM player
connected to or installed into your PC. The Emax images
and disks created or read by EMXP are compatible with the whole range of Emu
Emax samplers: -
Emu Emax -
Emu Emax-SE -
Emu Emax-HD -
Emu Emax-SE HD -
Emu Emax-Plus -
Emu Emax II -
Emu Emax II Turbo The Emulator II
images created or read by EMXP are compatible with the full Emulator II
sampler range: -
Emu Emulator II -
Emu Emulator II+ -
Emu Emulator II+ HD The Emulator
III images and disks created or read by EMXP are compatible with the whole
range of Emu Emulator III samplers: -
Emu Emulator III -
Emu Emulator IIIX The Akai S1000
files and floppy disks created or read by EMXP are compatible with the Akai
S1000 samplers (S1000, S1000PB, S1000HD, S1000KB). The SoundFont2
files created by EMXP are compliant with the SoundFont 2.1 specifications.
Any SoundFont 2.1 compatible hardware device or software should be capable of
processing these files. The SoundFont2
files read by EMXP can be SoundFont 2.0, SoundFont 2.1 or SoundFont 2.4
files. |
