- Horst Jankowski: "Black Forest Explosion!"
- LP/CD, Motor 537 392, Germany, 1997
- comment:
- Johan: My rating: 4 points on 5. "The Fantastic Piano Sounds Of Horst Jankowski; His Very Best Recordings 1968-1973". Tastefull, mostly uptempo, bright & smooth brass EZ, with jazz and bossa nova influences. Only about 4 tracks feature his wordless Singers prominently. Covers of "Pata pata", "Mais que nada", "Light my fire" with German lyrics, and "Shaft", which starts out as a faitful repro, but then halfway Horst gets a bit wild on his piano and turns the piece in someting new. If you liked his track on the "Get easy, the German pops collection" compilation cd, you'll like this cd/lp too. Recommended! Tracks taken from these original LP's: "Piano Affairs"; "Jankowski Plays Jankowski"; "A Walk in the Evergreens"; "For nightpeople only"; "the many moods of Horst Jankowski"; "Follow me"; "Jankowskeynotes"; "Horst Jankowski International". Plus "Alexander II" (single).

- Ron Grandia: What the hell is THIS? Just what the hell? This is utter madness. The liners indicate the recordings were made in the 1940's. There appears to be some controversy as to whether she was truly a talentless, deep-pocketed imbecile or a satirical genius mental-flossing the world. She was remarkably bad. Her renown spread as a result. She eventually played Carnegie Hall packed to capacity with folks who wanted to see this tuneless wonder for themselves. She died exactly one month later. Imagine an opera diva in the comic dimension of the Marx Brothers, and I think you will begin to understand the implosive combination of absolute inabilty and absolute enthusiasm at work here on this record.

- Antonio Carlos Jobim: "A certain Mr. Jobim"
- CD, Warner/ Reprise 93624 8244, Germany, 2001
- comment:
- Antonio Carlos Jobim: "Antonio Carlos Jobim"
- Triple CD box, Verve, USA, 1998
- comment:
- Keir Keightley: Nice, and certainly the packaging is absolutely gorgeous (each CD is held in a different pocket - but they're not pockets - they're unlike anything you've ever seen - different coloured, cardboard cut-outs in the shape of a fish, a flower, and an abstract design - very Japanese). But as a massive Jobim fan, I was disappointed, especially by the 3rd CD, which is Verve "jazz" renditions of a handful of the same songs. Nice idea, but like "alternate takes", stacked one on top of the other on a jazz reissue, I never listen to it. But the set as a whole has the advantage of including a lot of Jobim tracks, plus versions of his songs by Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, and some of Jobim's post-60s work (like his duet with Elis Regina). But you're paying mucho dinero for really only 2 CDs, IMHO. Instead, I would spend my money on three of these Jobim CDs: (1) "The Composer Plays" - Jobim's first US album, originally entitled "The Composer of Desafinado Plays". One of the greatest easy listening albums of all time. (2) "Antonio Carlos Jobim: Composer". This contains 2 full LPs made for Warner Bros. in 1965-66, plus some tracks from an instrumental Jobim album "Love, Strings, and Jobim". This stuff is not as smooth as "The Composer Plays", but over time I've come to love the shaky roughness of Jobim's voice (and none of this is on the Verve box set). (3) Astrud Gilberto "The Silver Collection". Basically her first two solo albums (1965-66), with Jobim accompanying her on a lot of tracks, plus a selection of greatest hits from subsequent stuff (like her amazing version of "So Nice (Summer Samba)" with the Walter Wanderley trio). But "The Girl from Ipanema" isn't included, for which you'd have to go to the Stan Getz "Getz/Gilberto" album, which Verve have just reissued with the 45 single edit of "Girl". So that's actually four CDs - but I bet they'll be almost the price the Jobim box set!
- Antonio Carlos Jobim: "Composer"
- CD, Warner Bros. Archives 9 46114, USA, 199?
- comment:
- Johan: My rating: 3 points on 5. Combines the original LP's "The wonderful world of Antonio Carlos Jobim" (1965, arranged by Nelson Riddle) and "A certain Mr. Jobim" (1967, arranged by Claus Ogerman), plus 2 tracks from "Love, strings and Jobim" (1966), plus 4 previously unreleased tracks, recorded during the "A certain Mr. Jobim" session. The legendary Brazilian composer performs his own songs, singing on 19 of the 28 tracks (the others being instrumental). Despite Jobim's pleasingly vulnerable voice, I think these are not really the best versions around of his songs, as Riddle's and Ogerman's honey strings smooth out that typical "tristesse" quality of the bossa nova, and the English lyrics don't have that exotic touch of the Portuguese. This is velvet bossa nova targeted to Sinatra fans. Tracks: "She's A Carioca", "Agua De Beber", "Surfboard", "Useless Landscape", "So' Tinha De Ser Com Voce", "A Felicidade", "Bonita", "Favela", "Valsa De Porto Das Caixas", "Samba Do Aviao", "Por Toda A Mimha Vida", "Dindi", "Hurry Up And Love Me", "Pardon My English", "Bonita", "Se Todos Fossem Iguais A Voce", "Off-Key", "Photograph", "Surfboard", "Outra Vez", "I Was Just One More For You", "Estrada Do Sol", "Don't Ever Go Away", "Zingaro", "Esperanca Perdida", "Fotographia", "Por Causa De Voce", "Desafinado".
- Antonio Carlos Jobim: "The Composer Of Desafinado Plays"
- CD, Verve 521431, USA, 1997
CD, Motor, Germany, 199? - comment:
- Johan: This disc offers instrumental interpretations of some of Jobim's most famous compositions from the early '60s (Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, 1962). Tracks: "The Girl From Ipanema", "Amor Em Paz", "Agua De Beber", "Vivo Sonhando", "O Morrow Nao Tem Vez (Favela)", "Insensatez", "Corcovado", "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Meditation", "So Danco Samba", "Chega De Saudade", "Desafinado".
- robert mckenna: probably on the soporific side for most but I love.

- Chuck: For me it is the most exotic of all Jobim albums. Lots of girl chorus voices feverishly singing his songs. A big, beautiful prodution of Jobim. You can't go wrong for the price.

- Johan: My rating: 3 points on 5. From 1966, with orchestra, arranged & recorded entirely in Brazil. Track 1 is great, uptempo, a groovy tune composed especially by Jobim for this album. Two more tracks have a groovy, BIG sound and uptempo rhythm and great percussion. The rest is still good, but not as true to the Brasilain roots as one might expect after reading the liner notes, who tell amongst others about Jobim's difficult search for the best 3 percussionists in the backcountry -- in most tracks the percussion doesn't get a front seat at all...

- Laurie Johnson: "The Avengers" (Music Composed And Conducted By Laurie Johnson)
- CD, Varèse Sarabande, USA, 199?
- comment:
- Michael D. Toth: these are NOT original soundtrack recordings, however, but re-recordings done by Laurie with the London Studio Orchestra in 1980. Not bad, and worth getting if you're a Johnson/Avengers fan. In addtion to Avengers and New Avengers music, it also has music from other Johnson scores (Dr. Strangelove, First Men In the Moon, Capt. Kronos Vampire Hunter, & Hedda).

- comment:
- Johan: My rating: 3 points on 5. 30 Tracks from the 60's, including the original "Avengers" theme, "Dr. Strangelove", his entire "Two Cities Suite" album. About 10 of these tracks are very good, but there are as many average or just plain boring tracks. All are rather lush big band style, TOO lush and mellow at times, not much unconventional things happening here. Some crime jazz influences. Also several humorous pieces, sort of a big band version of Leroy Anderson. Also a couple of Latin tracks, but the Edmundo Ros smooth kind of Latin.
- Plas Johnson: "The Warm Sound Of Plas Johnson"

- comment:
- Darrell Brogdon: Great CD featuring the saxophonist on Les Baxter's "Jungle Jazz" and "African Jazz", as well as Mancini's "The Pink Panther" and many other soundtracks. This comp features Plas in small group sessions with Emil Richards, Jimmy Bond, and others, plus several tracks from the smoky "Blue Martini" album (which has great "late night" feel), with John Neel's Orchestra. Check it out!

- Kristof Space Debris: Finally tracked down a real cheap copy of this, their version of Taboo made something of a name for itself here in Belgium even outside the exoticat scene. Wicked instro's in the vein of The Tornados, The Ventures and such. Sabre Dance is good too. Great album.
- Jack Diamond Music: Amazing guitar and Exotica guitar instrumental group from Belgium with very little or no reverb on those gorgeous fat guitar sounds. Fans of George Barnes, Takeshi Terauchi, The Shadows, The Hot Club of America in Hi Fi, The Ventures, Barney Kessel, Al Caiola, Al Casey, Howard Roberts, Roy Lanham, Kenny Burrell, Carl Kress, Phil Upchurch, Herb Remmington, Speedy West........etc, will love this to pieces and there are a few really exceptional Exotica titles. All of these tracks are from their Europe only releases from circa 1965/66 + 4 Tracks from the US only release They are also really big into the female ethereal voice thing-a-ma-bob which soooooooooo many of us love to bits.

- Jack Diamond Music: Yet another (killer) JUMPING JACQUES CD full and overflowing with some of the best wordless/scat pop/jazzy sounds to have your life changed by. I do believe that on both Jumping Jacques CD's there are NO WORDS! This is exactly the type of thing you've been waiting for.

- Johan: One track was featured on the "beat actione" LP comp of a couple of years ago. and the others are as beautiful and groovy and simply perfect
- Jill: ALL wordless vocals. It has some brilliant moments.
- Jack Diamond Music: Wordless Vocal Extravaganza with no comparison in sight! Originally released circa 1968, France. It's pop, it's Bossa Nova, it's jazz, it's beat, all together and separately. Every track is excellent! I saw a copy of this sell in auction for $250.00 and I can understand why. This is just tooooo cool.
- from the liner notes: There's something new on the musical horizon, a fresh, bright form of expression, an innovation in rhythm, a real revolution in the use of the human voice: The truly different vocal-instrumental group THE JUMPING JACQUES. Thanks to an original and exciting musical concept, their leader, JACQUES HENDRIX, presents you with a brand new dimension in sound. You will be surprised by the diversity of the themes of this music, sometimes sweet, sometimes wild, but always rich, surprising, spontaneous and irresistible. The main innovation of THE JUMPING JACQUES on the technical side is the vocal rhythm sung by the extremely deep and yet flexible bass voice of JEAN STOUT and by the girl's voices reproducing, by means of nonsense syllables, the rhythms and chords usually played by electric guitars. All of this is underlined by the drums, giving an irresistible beat which entices you to dance. To this first rhythmic playback is added the perfectly homogeneous vocal line of the entire group. Then superimposed on this amazingly sonorous foundation, by means of re-recording, is the surprising and magnificent voice of soloist FRANCOISE WALCH. This voice is often doubled in the background by the subtle sound of a saxophone or flute, barely perceptible, but giving a beautiful and unexpected color. The absence of lyrics, replaced by new sounds and nonsense syllables, allows the human voice a wide range of expression and color.
