The book “Hard Workers: The Real Terriers”,
written by Daniele Piacentini, speaks exclusively of the few terrier
breeds still used for work.
It deals with various aspects of this field, from the training of the
dogs for their use in the earth and with boar to notes on first aid
treatment in cases where dogs suffer injuries while working. It even
includes commentary on the prey typically hunted with terriers.
One of the most original aspects of the book consists of a series of
interviews of terriermen, among whom are some the best Anglo-Saxon
professionals working on a daily basis with packs of Foxhounds.
In the vast panorama of books for dog lovers, this one is surely unique,
both for its content and its narrative.
Another special aspect of this work is the enthusiasm that it has
provoked in the English themselves, to such a degree, in fact, that we
have ventured to print a version in English for European, American and
British readers. We do this in the hope of sharing with other countries
the Italian perspective and knowledge of this subject.

Das Buch „Hard Workers: The Real
Terriers“ (Schwerarbeiter: Die echten Terrier) behandelt ausschließlich
die wenigen Terrierrassen, die heute noch zur Arbeit eingesetzt werden.
Wichtige Aspekte werden ausführlich behandelt: Die Ausbildung zum
Jagdhund, in Tierbauten und als Wildschweinhund mit Hinweisen zur Pflege
und zur Ersten Hilfe bei Unfällen. Auch die Tierrassen, für deren Jagd
der Terrier eingesetzt wird, werden beschrieben.
Interessante Interviews mit verschiedenen Terriermen, unter ihnen einige
der besten Briten, die tagtäglich mit Foxhoundrudeln arbeiten,
vervollständigen das Bild.
Auf Grund seines Inhalts und der erzählerischen Form, gehört die
Veröffentlichung sicher zu einem der interessantesten Bücher für alle
Liebhaber dieser Jagdhunde.
Ein weiterer Pluspunkt dieses Buches ist der fühlbare Enthusiasmus des
Autors, der die an der Entstehung beteiligten Briten dazu antrieb, uns
um eine Veröffentlichung des Buchs auch in Englisch für den britischen
und den amerikanischen Markt, zu bitten: Ziel des italienischen Autors
ist somit auch die Verbreitung der Kenntnisse auf internationaler Basis.

Het Engelse boek "Hard Workers: The
Real Terriers" (Harde Werkers: De Echte Terriërs), geschreven door
Daniele Piacentini, handelt uitsluitend over de weinige 'werkende'
terriërrassen die momenteel nog ingezet worden.
Verschillende aspecten worden hier uitvoerig behandeld: o.a.
hondentraining voor de jacht in holen, jacht op everzwijn, tips voor
E.H.B.O. bij eventuele verwondingen of trauma's opgelopen tijdens de
jacht. Ook de prooien van de terriërs worden hier besproken.
Het origineel aspect van het boek zijn de interviews met actuele
'terriërmannen', waaronder enkele Britten die dagelijks met de meute
Foxhonden jagen en als de besten worden gezien.
De inhoud en de vertelwijze maakt dit boek uniek en het is zeker een
aanrader voor de liefhebbers van de "working terriers". Het enthousiasme
dat dit boek teweeggebracht heeft bij de Britten is verrassend. Vandaar
deze Engelse publicatie voor zowel de Europese, als de Britse en
Amerikaanse markt. Hiermee hopen we in andere landen de Italiaanse
kennis van deze materie en de laatste interviews met bekende „sportmen“
aan de man te brengen; dit vooraleer de Engelse wet op het verbod van de
vossenjacht van kracht werd.

Terriers" (Travailleurs Acharnés: Les Vrais Terriers) écrit par Daniele
Piacentini a pour sujet spécifique le monde des dernières races de
terriers encore utilisés pour leurs travails fournit durant la chasse.
Divers aspects sont traités dont l’entraînement a la chasse en tanières,
aux sangliers ainsi que les premiers secours lors de lésions ou de
blessures, il ne manque pas d’évoquer également les proies habituellement
chassées.
L’un des cotés le plus original de ce livre est la série d’interview avec
quelques-uns ‘Terriermen’ anglais reconnus pour être les meilleurs au
monde dans ce domaine et qui travaillent régulièrement pour les meutes de
Foxhounds. C’est un point de référence pour les passionnés.
Dans le vaste éventail de livres canines celui-ci est unique autant pour
son contenu que pour sa narration. De plus il a suscité un tel
enthousiasme en Angleterre ce qui a permis de faire le succès de cette
édition en anglais pour le marché européen, britannique et américain en
gardant la volonté de partager cette connaissance italienne a d’autres

La loi de février 2005 qui a prohibé la chasse au renard en Angleterre a

| WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?

The breed has a historical background dating back
some 70 years in the Lakes Region of Northern England. These small
terriers are used primarily for ground dwelling quarry. Some have been
used in wild boar and raccoon hunting.
The Patterdale is a working terrier known for its courage and
tenacity. Stories abound relating to the willingness of the Patterdale
Terrier to work endlessly while in the earth.
The Patterdale is also gaining recognition as an excellent companion
dog by being consideralby more laid-back and
more tractable than some other working terrier breeds.
The bonding traits of the Patterdale give them an
overwhelming desire to please their owners whether
working or playing.
In the home, the Patterdale is affectionate, gentle and very active.
They bask in the attention of their person.

GENERAL APPEARANCE & CHARACTERISTICS
|
A sturdy, tough, active, little terrier. As a working terrier, it has to be
capable of squeezing through very small passages underground to follow its
quarry. A big terrier can cut off its own air supply. Therefore, its chest is
not too big.
The dog presents a compact, balanced image, with straight legs.
Scars resulting from wounds received while working are considered honorable
and are not to be penalized.
The head and muzzle are strong and powerful.
TEETH - A full complement of strong, white teeth meet in a level bite.
Teeth broken, or incisors lost, while working are not to be penalized.
EARS - The moderate size ears fold to the side of the cheeks.
The strong, muscular neck is of moderate length. A strong neck helps as much
as a strong jaw in killing vermin.
The body conveys an active appearance. The chest is not too big, capable of
being spanned behind the shoulders by average-size hands. The strong, straight
back is in proportion to the height. Not too long, not too short. Too short a
back in proportion to the terrier's weight makes him awkward underground.
The tail is set high. Its length is in proportion to the body, usually about
five to seven inches in length. The tail is sometimes the only thing by which
to pull a terrier out when you have dug down to him.
The coat may be smooth or broken coated. Smooth-coated dogs have a dense coat.
A good coat is important to protect against the wet underground and briars.
Acceptable colors include: Black, red; liver (with a red nose); grizzle, black
and tan; bronze. Ninety-five percent of the breed will produce black-colored
dogs, but the odd dog of all colors will come with white feet and chest. Some
of the best ones are marked like this.
Height range is from 11 to 15 inches.
Weight ranges from 10 to 17 pounds. The dogs weigh more than they look.
Rocky 15 years old.
Pur nuttall blood.
At least 300 foxes and 154 badgers in 15 years.
