Cat saliva and cat hair are strong allergens.  Fel D1 is a glycoprotein present in saliva and fur.  It spreads when the cat grooms himself and will . Some minutes later, the allergic has red eyes, asthma and hay fever

It seems males are prone to make more people allergic to then than females and most people are immune to being allergic to small kittens... But kittens grow up…

A permanent contact with cats is also preferable to occasional meetins.

What can we do ?

The easiest solution is not to have a cat !  But most of allergics are unable to get rid of their beloved feline.

If symptoms are weak, some medicines can be usefull, but are not a full-term solution.

You can try a desensitization treatment, but results are not always satisfactory. It usually only works if you have occasional contact with cats.

If you are allergic and cann't not live without a cat, two breeds are a possibility :  The sphynx.

This cat does not provoke allergies but this breed does need special care and consideration such as helping him keep his coat clean, and keeping him warm. And you have to like this strange cat. If you are interested, here are some links :

Description du Sphynx (French)

The Cornish Rex  has the undercoat that is curly and sweet. This coat does not cause allergies. Many Cornish Rex owners confirm this fact. BUT current research does not prove that all people who have allergies can live with a Cornish Rex. Don't get them confused with a Devon Rex, a Silkirk Rex or a Germand Rex, because those breeds have different coats. However, some people with allergies are able to also live with these different breeds of Rex's without to much trouble. ADVICE : visit some catteries and talk to breeders to get more information and sit with the kittens in the cattery to judge your allergic reactions before you buy one and bring it home.
